Just when Newcastle fans thought it couldn’t get any worse ….

Posted by Cathal Breathnach on July 9, 2009 | 8 Comments

Joey Barton returns to the first team.

Yes, Barton is set to make his first appearance in a Newcastle shirt since the day he called Alan Shearer a “shit boss”. The 26-year old was sent off in controversial circumstances during Newcastle’s trip to Liverpool last May, prompting the North East club to ban him but it now looks as though he may still have a future at St James’ Park.

Barton is set to feature in Newcastle’s pre-season friendly with Shamrock Rovers on Saturday which will no doubt cause a bit of a stir amongst Magpies fans.

I would rather some of our youngsters got a run out but Barton isn’t the major problem right now. We need an owner ASAP and a manager (NOT Shearer in my opinion) to ship out him and the other high earner low effort dross on the books out of this club.

It’s a melt down situation if someone doesn’t grab the bull by the bollocks, and soon. Big Al is to be applauded for putting his cotb and if he gets the job I wish him every success – let’s not knock him, he’s up for the poisoned chalice and he’ll need all the help he can get.

But it’s a far from ideal start – I think we have to hope for a season (or three) of consolidation, and then hope for a period of rebulding. And let’s not rely on fancy foreingers to bail us out – there’s more than enough local talent just dying to pull on the shirt. With a bit of TLC (not the shite dished out to Shola) there’s success on the doorstep! Really, there is!

I am sure the average thinking Geordie doesn’t really believe that Ashley is to blame for all this – his intentions were good I don’t doubt, and I liked the shirt stuff. Better than the stuffed shirt stuff from the guys who sit in the ivory tower every week, eh! So, you heard it here – Ashley was a good guy. Just didn’t quite get it right but a good guy none the less.

Looking back, this has been a disaster in the making for a good while. I guess we are looking at the Hall-Shepherd NOTW setup as the beginning of the rot – this just stunk of a lack of class after Sir John’s tenure. And with this as an undertone to the next ten years, you can look at the clubs dismal treatment of the best manager we had ever in their failure to back Bobby when the dressing room became revolting. (Am I being naive to think of one name? I think the Boy Wonder was a real talent but I’m glad I never had to manage him). And do you remember the Glenn Roder years? Weren’t they just great? Stand up Glan and take a bow – success in the face of adversity. And what did we do with him?

So, bonny Lad’s and Lasss’s – let’s get real here. We are a club under construction and what we need is people who will back the team through thick and thin. Let’s get the business side sorted NOW and get on with a good 5 year plan – no over-ambitious hyping. Let’s talk long term and start NOW!!!!

The fact still remains, Joey Barton is still a Newcastle Player. Contrary to what Shearer or anyone else thinks, I challenge anyone to name a better player at the club.

Joey Barton is the best player at the club, I think we should keep him.

Think about this strategically. This could be a big sign that Shearer is not coming back to coach the team. Or maybe they want to keep Barton around for whoever is making offers to buy the club… and then they’ll drop him if Shearer resigns for next season.
