Real Madrid have cheeky £65 million bid rejected by Liverpool

Posted by Cathal Breathnach on July 12, 2009 | 17 Comments

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has today confirmed that the Merseyside club have turned down a £65 million bid from Real Madrid for Fernando Torres. The Spanish giants have been spending massive sums of money all summer on some of world football’s biggest names, however they have failed in their attempts to bring Torres to the Bernabeu.

Since arriving at Anfield back in 2007, Torres has scored an impressive 50 goals for Liverpool, establishing himself as a firm fan favourite in the process. The 25-year old is now widely recognised as one of the best strikers in the world and some would argue that he is worth more than the £65 million Real Madrid offered.

Benitez had this to say about the bid : “We always knew when a bid came we’d say no because the main thing was the player wanted to stay. People know the player wanted to stay here but it did not stop them trying. Football has changed and there is big, big money around – but we still have the same idea to keep the spine of the team and work hard for next season. We wanted to send a message that we are strong and want to improve. We don’t want to lose any of our big players.”

There is no doubt that Liverpool would be far worse off without Torres and I’m sure all you Liverpool fans will be delighted to see that Benitez isn’t one bit interested in cashing in on one of his most prized assets. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks Real Madrid’s summer spending is getting a bit ridiculous, so I’m glad that Liverpool have decided to stand up to them and say no.

What do you think? Comments below please.

NEVER EVER sell Fernando! if we sold Fernando then the liverpool spirit would be dampened and we need to keep the Fernando – Steven partnership going. It would be great if we could bring in David Silva or Villa and im happy to see Glen here! I believe also that if we keep Javier and Xabi next season that the title will be ours rightfully and at long last!

Money isn’t everything and Torres is an example of what football players should be! Dedicated to a team, and, teams should be the same = dedicated to players! Money is the root of all evil…

    Quote from LAZA:-

“ummm royal red dont mention god with torres it disrespects me, even though he is my favourite player clearly you have no religion.”

Just a short piece of info for you LAZA my friend, an ex Liverpool LEGEND went by the name of GOD, twas a certain Mr Robbie Fowler. Now re-read Royal Reds quote again:-

“Torres is as close to God as you can get”.
