Real Madrid winger admits Spurs have been in contact

Posted by Cathal Breathnach on July 15, 2009 | 1 Comment

Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben has today admitted that his agent, who is also his father, has held talks with Tottenham.

The Dutch international has been told by Real Madrid that he can leave the club this summer after the Spanish giants completed the signings of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, however Robben seems to want to stay and fight for his place.

The 25-year old had this to say about a possible move to White Hart Lane : “I have heard of their interest and my dad has had some contact with Spurs and they are a great club but at the moment I am happy at Madrid and I will stay there.”

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is desperate to add another midfielder to his squad before the season starts next month after missing out on Stewart Downing who now looks set to join Aston Villa.

Personally, I would love to see Robben return to the Premier League. I was a big fan of his during his time at Chelsea and I think a move back to England would do him the world of good. With the World Cup fast approaching, I suppose it would make perfect sense for Robben to get a year of first team football at Spurs rather than warming the bench at the Bernabeu.

Well at least his comments were positive towards Spurs and the idea of them being interested. Surely he has to see his options are limited in Madrid. This doesn’t mean he has to come to White Hart Lane, but he would only be guaranteed a spot on the bench. If they do sign Ribery then he wouldn’t even get that.

Spurs should try their hardest to get as many of the Madrid players as possible!
