Liverpool ready to make £12 million bid for Arsenal and Sunderland target

Liverpool are ready to make a £12 million bid for Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole after it was revealed that Xabi Alonso has handed in a written transfer request.
The England under-21 international has been strongly linked with a move away from the JJB Stadium in recent days, with both Arsenal and Sunderland understood to be interested.
Cattermole, 21, only arrived at Wigan 12 months ago for just £3.5 million, however his terrific form for both club and country over the last year has seen his value rise significantly.
Rafa Benitez will obviously need to add another midfielder to the ranks at Anfield with Alonso now looking set for a £28 million move to Real Madrid and Cattermole to me, would be a quality addition. He is only young and I think with the right guidance, he will develop into one of the best midfielders in the country.
Latics chairman Dave Whelan has insisted that Cattermole will still be wearing the blue and white of Wigan next season, however with clubs like Liverpool now interested, I find it hard to imagine that they can hold onto him for too much longer. What do you think? Would Cattermole be a decent replacement for Alonso? Comments below please.

I thought 3.5M was steep last year. But he has improved his discipline, concedes far less needless fouls and is far better in possession. I believe he will develop into a regular international. He is no Alonso though – if he is bought it will be as cover for the Monster

is this website in a mental institution?
Cattermole is a Championship player at best. And who on earth is Mashrona? Jesus wept!!

Puzzled, this website is not a mental institution!
Cattermole is far better than just a Championship player, he proved that last year!

I think you are all stupid there is only 1 place for catt and that is Sunderland

Not good enough. Period!!!!

Cattermole wil fit in to Alonso shoes. Alonso wasn’t as good as this when rafa bought him. I think catt has the potential of becoming a big and world class midfielder.

in rafa we trust.
masch was garbage when he left west ham
alonso was nothing special when he arrived (exception: last season)
yet rafa turned these careers around, now masch has a 50 mil tag and alonso 30 mil.
if rafa wants cattermole, and we get him, I will have confidence.
but I’m NOT waiting for players like catermole to develop before we win the next title

Not seen too much of the guy….
But what i will say is that in the U21s in sweden, he was the big stand out player me in the England team. He had good awareness and ability, all at the right age…
I dont think we should pay more than £9m for him
If rafa goes for him, im sure he knows what he is doing!

I’m a life-long Boro fan and trust me Lee Cattermole has the potential to be a much more complete player than Alonso (not that I don’t think Alonso is the business).
He had to get out of Middlesbrough because he was basically getting into all sorts of trouble off the field – a move to a new place seems to have helped him grow up.
He’s alot younger
He’s alot quicker
He’s covers miles more ground/is much more energetic
He is much stronger in the tackle/a more intimidating player
If his passing can improve to half the standard of Alonso’s then he’ll be twice the player.
Mark my words……

Here we go again slagging off a player because he isn’t Italian or Spanish etc, Why can’t English players be any good?, This kid is a top player now. I would be very happy to see him at Liverpool along with Turner from Hull City due to the new European rule coming in soon, It’s about week in week out performances and these lads put it in, They would improve very quickly at Liverpool with good players around them.

Cattlemore is good we should look for Sheepless as well good young midfielder

I think puzzled must be permanently just that!
Anyone who is more than just mildly interested in football would have watched a fair amount of the European U21 tournament. Cattermole was one of the stand-out players of the tournament for England. He displayed leadership qualities, a very good range of passing and composure, as well as keeping his notorious hot head under control.
I must admit I wasn’t a fan a few seasons ago but I would love him to come to Sunderland, and develop into a regular England International.
