The latest twist in the Xabi Alonso saga
Posted by Cathal Breathnach on August 1, 2009 | 10 Comments
Real Madrid are today preparing to change their bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso after weeks of speculation regarding the player’s future.
The Spanish international has been continuously linked with a move to the Bernabeu all summer long, however Real have, as of know, failed to meet Liverpool’s asking price of £30 million.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has always maintained his desire to keep Alonso, 27, at Anfield, however it now appears unlikely that Alonso will still be wearing red next season after he handed a transfer request earlier this week.
It has been claimed today that Real will offer Liverpool cash plus Rafael van der Vaart in a bid to push through a deal. I personally think that if Liverpool managed to get £19 million plus Van der Vaart in exchange for Alonso they would be doing extremley well.
Even the most ardent Liverpool will admit that it’s only a matter of time before Alonso is on his way out of the club so it’s crucial that they get the best deal they can. I have always been a huge admirer of Van der Vaart’s and I would just love to see how he would cope with the pace of the Premier League. It will be fascinating to see how this one pans out over the coming weeks, so stay tuned to Football Corner for all the latest.

If real want to trade in their cast offs such as Van der Fart it should be £25m cash and the player. Only player I would like to see in exchange is Wesley sneider. I would be saying give us him plus £20m to test their resolve. They need Alonso more than we need the cash. They need spanish players for champs league and also Xavi is the player who willl knit all their expensive prima donnas together.

Van der Vart is worth nothing at all. He was a disaster in Spain and he would be a disaster in England. Benitez should insist on thirty million and to hell with more mediocre squad players that accomplish nothing.

Van Der Vaart is horrible. He has been overrated for years and he would be a waste of time. Yes, he has the tools and he looked a great talent in the Eredivisie and somewhat in the Budesliga but he is not worth giving up the money which can be used elsewhere.
Naturally the arrival of Juande Ramos slowed down his progress at Madrid, but he was never tearing it up anyway. If he utilizes his potential then he can be fantastic, but where have I heard that recently?… Oh yeah! Ryan Babel. Besides he is an attacking MF, we have enough players behind the forward, and on the wings, as it is. So if we buy another such player it might as well be a 25 million gamble on Silva rather than making room for VD(That he is) Vaart.
If they offered Wes Sneijder plus cash then it would be a brilliant deal, as far as a deal that sees us lose Alonso can go. Even Huntelaar make more sense, he is a natural goalscorer after all. He comes with much the same level of potential as VDV but in a different area, however KJH was just another victim of Madrid where they bring in every striker in the world and ultimately they still play Raul up front. He played 20 games, many as a sub, and scored 8 goals in the second half of the season. Considering he had limited time to settle, limited playing time and of course it being his first season in La Liga… well thats a good return.
So Huntelaar, I think, would be the best choice out of what has, thought to have been, offered. While Negredo… well what to say about him; he is powerful and he can score, but he is not the same kind of goal scorer that KJH is anyway. Besides the “interest” in him from Rafa is rubbish anyway, its just another one of those stories that came out with no qoutes and no proof a while ago based on the following facts 1) We had secured that “treaty” with Almeria where we get first option on thier players(and vice versa) and 2) He is spanish. Yet now it somehow, yet again, pushed onto the public as though Rafa’s interest in Negredo was a well documented fact.
I say Hold out for 30 million OR take 20+ and Huntelaar, then buy Aquilani(if he is an actual target that is). Otherwise we keep Alonso and we win either way. Since his best season came after an embarassing and hectic summer, considering that he should be playing like Pele next season.

I don’t care either it will be Rafael van der Vaart, Huntelaar, Wesley Sneider or Negredo..as long it’s not Arjen Rabben!!

Well, its likely that Xabi will leave. Don’t want that though. But if that is happening for sure, then its better to get 30mil, if not that then, rafa should go for the cash + Sneijder… no Vart. Sorry. Huntelaar might also be a choice. But i would prefer Aquilani over all of them.
