Liverpool finally agree deal with Real Madrid for Xabi Alonso. So who will Rafa buy now?

Posted by on August 4, 2009 | 10 Comments

Liverpool have this evening agreed a deal with Real Madrid for the sale of Xabi Alonso.

It was only a matter of time really, wasn’t it?

Today’s news brings to an end Alonso’s 5 year stay on Merseyside. The Spanish midfielder joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad back in 2004 and has since gone on to make nearly 200 appearances.

It’s fair to say that Alonso will be sadly missed by the large majority of Liverpool fans, but hey, at least Rafa Benitez now has £30 million at his disposal to spend on a replacement.

So, who do you think will be the man to fill the void which Alonso has undoubtedly left? Please leave your comments below.

David Silva would be an ideal replacement, even though its sad to see xabi alonso leave. He is an excellent player.

With £30 million, lets hope theres more than just one signing, I think a striker is most important thing at this stage….we can’t rely on Vorinin!!

He should get Aquilani(more movement than Alonso, good passing and a great shot.) and David Villa. Sell Lucas to Corinthians and get Defour instead. Champions in 2009/2010. And the big bonus: Man. Utd in 5th place behind City…….

Get Aquilani as replacement for Alonso, then buy Silva and sell Babel and last but not least invest in VILLA ;) If we get those players we can easily become champions of England again after 20 years!

Although Xabi is a wicked player, i’m kinda glad the whole transfer saga is over now we’ve got time to find a replacement and hopefully make our squad a winning squad!
Never seen Aquilani play but heard he’s good but injury prone, which COULD a risk at 18mil or so. So maybe we could either push Stevie inot CM and buy a class striker to partner Nando, that would be Aguero or Villa.
But if we did go for the Aquilani option then we should buy a cheaper forward as back-up to Torres or Gerrard. This would probably be either Tuncay or Defoe maybe.
Also heard that we are interested in Steven Defour. He’s good and young!
I don’t know what we’ve got for Xabi but for me the perfect thing would be to get 20mil+Sjneider. Then with that 20mil buy Silva with the 20mil.
