Is this the signing of the summer?

Posted by on August 12, 2009 | 7 Comments

I was shocked to see that Lee Cattermole has today joined Sunderland for an initial fee of just £6 million, the fee will rise to £10 million based on appearances and international caps etc;.

The England under-21 international was strongly linked with a move to the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, however it is Steve Bruce who has today won the race.

I don’t really know why I admire Cattermole so much, but I do.

He is just 20-years of age and he has already captained a Premier League club at Wigan. He has that bull-dog like approach which, for a midfield player, is vital. He is certainly not afraid of a tackle, although he does sometime mis-calculate his challenges.

I personally feel he has the potential to become the best midfielder in the country and I would be extremely surprised if one of the so-called, bigger clubs doesn’t come in for him in a year or two. In fact, I’m surprised none of the big 4 made a move for him this summer.

There have already been some cracking signings this summer, including Manchester City’s pruchase of Gareth Barry for just £12 million, however I firmly believe that Sunderland have today completed the signing of the summer in Cattermole.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say. Is Cattermole really the signing of the summer or was it someone else? Leave your comments below.

I’m really pleased with this signing. Every time i’ve seen him play he never shys from the challenge and that is something Sunderland have missed over 6-8 years.

When we have done well it was with midfield generals like Alex Rae, Kevin Ball and Gavin McCann. Now we have Lorik Cana, Cattermole and Teemu Tainio.

I am a great believer in the formation of two defensive midfielders with 4 creative players playing off them.

Signing of the summer? I hope so

I think his greatest strength is his ability to imitate two different mammals at once.

i am really pleased that sunderland have managed to prise cattermole away from wigain. i think for 6 million is a bargin he is class just dont know how the midfield will work with richardson, cana, cattermole, malbranque but i feel we need a propper left winger more now and we have ledbitter and reid. i know bruce was keen to sighn ledbitter for wigain so how will he fit all these players in together.

This guy is a legend, which explains why Wigan were so reluctant to let go. Guess his past connections with Brucey helped us secure him.

First of all i think this is a very good siging for Sunderland, as Chris said we have missed a hard tackling midfield for several years.

However “Shaun” Lee Cattermole is NOT a legend, he has the potenial to be a very good player for us but not quite a legend.

And Callum, i hope to good you are not a Sunderland supporter, your spelling is shocking, its people like yourself who give Mackems a bad name.
