Should Arsenal cough up £15 million for this guy?

Posted by on August 12, 2009 | 26 Comments

It would appear that Arsenal will need to cough up £15 million if they are to have any chance of signing Fulham defender Brede Hangeland.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring Hangeland to the Emirates before the transfer window shuts on September 1st. Should a deal go through at the rumoured £15 million, it will be one of Wenger’s most expensive signings since arriving at the club in 1996.

Hangeland, 28, is open to a potential move to Arsenal, however he also claimed that he would be more than happy to stay at Craven Cottage for another season.

Personally, I think Hangeland would be a perfect replacement for Kolo Toure, who left the club earlier this summer to join Manchester City. Arsenal clearly have a bit of money to spend and I feel they should just give Fulham the £15 million because the sooner they get Hangeland to the club, the better. The Norwegian international is without doubt one of best defenders in the Premier League and at £15 million, he would still prove value for money.

I would like to see him brought to Arsenal but WHERE exactly did you hear this? Are you close pals with Le Prof? It’s this cheap so-called journalism that makes people friggin crazy and you spout it like it’s the gospel. Gimme a break! When have you EVER heard Arsene say that he is desperate. I think you are the desperate one, try and fuckin chill out.

U MADE A GOOD POINT. BUT I DONT THINK WENGER IS PREPARED TO SPLASH THAT KIND OF MONEY ON A DEFENDER. £15MILLION?…….I DOUBT WENGER ON THAT.

Who said wenger was desperate to do anything mate! I like hangeland he was amazing in both the games we played against fulham last year, his biggest asset would have to be his composure when defending (something i think we need!) but the closer we get to the deadline the less chance we have of signing him because fulham will want to sign a replacement too. We will have to sign a defender eventually if not out of the desire to improve the team but out of necessity cos gallas is going after this year

Buy him!!! We need to improve defense. Last season when Gallas and Clishy got hurt we started to loose after 21 games without lost.

No. He’s slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, slow!

Our CBs play a high line and need good pace. Which he doesn’t have.

Hangeland is a terrific central defender & Fulham would be mad to let him go under 15 million but as usual 1 of the big 4 come knocking and he could be on his way.

I really hope not as Fulham are building a decent team there now and we need to keep hold of our good players – not keep selling them.

We must sign this boy! ASAP.

He is exactly what we need!

As good a player as Kolo was, this guy is much much better!

Commanding, good in the air and composed!

Yes we need defenders, but not for £15m plus he’s 28 years old, so no we’re not that desperate. It’s just Roy Hodgson pushing up the price becase Hangeland is probably the only decent player Fulham have, and has he has already played in Europe he wouldn’t be eligible until January, and in January the transfer market opens again and we could get someone younger and at a much better price.

senderos to fulham plus a few quid?

That would be a Wenger way of doing it, non?

Caknacklehead is brilliant. Why? The cheek and straight-forwardness is marvelous. How and where did this info come from? Direct from Wenger or rumour mill?

I doubt Wenger will pay £15m for someone who is soon to turn 29. I’d have been doubtful if his transfer fee was £10m, at £15m, definitely he will not even consider him.
Eastern Europe is full of tall, strong
beasts why have’nt we got ourselves one or
    two.

As someone said above, Galleas is knackered
and will leave soon- I’d hoped it would be sooner but his physique will be the judge of that. He limped out of Emirates cup. So now if Djourou is injured then a CB has to be found to partner Vermaelen.

I think Hangeland would be a good signing, but 15 mill. is a bit over the top. AW will not spend that kind of money on a CB. Vermaelen was bought for 10 mill., and I can’t see AW raise that amount by 50 % to buy Hangeland. It’s not realistic.

    Hmmmmm
    Senderos ~ Swiss?
roy hodgson ~ former swiss manager,
Senderos to Everton (not a done deal)
    Senderos to Fulham + ££££

    Hmmmmmm ~ Watch this space

i think arsenal should bring in hangeland because then the defensive issue will be fine as we aslo have thomas verlamelam. I think arsenal should still have money to spend so it hink they should buy a ceture midfielder then i think we would havw a chance to win some sliverware many thanks

Brede is good, but break up his partnership with Aaron Hughes and I think he may struggle with the different tactical style that arse-in- vinegar plays, now for the money, which he is worth – would you take the risk. The alternative is you can have the pair for £30 million, about the price of an executive box at The Emirates for a season..!

anything less than £15 mill and you can go visit a taxidermist..!

After he put that up on here no-one needed to say a word. I had a good laugh in the office, everyone thought I was nuts.

I think that Hangeland would be a very specila buy as Arsenal height and experince at its back. for few seasons they have out-scored most teams but concede plent on set plays. B.D. if worth the 15 mill.

move for 8-10.5mil is a good price for 28 years old

doubt that wenger would splash 15m for hangeland, hes going to haggle.

NEVER is AW desperate-he knows what he is doing. He will find someone if he feels he needs someone but only at the right price. If brede is the guy he wants than he will do the buissness-dont worry.15 million doesent sound like an AW deal but if we have to say goodbye to senderos and a bit of cash ill be happy.

Extremely unlikely, priced too high for that age and pace. He’s good and would improve us, but zapata is the one to pay over the odds for. Too bad fazio said no to us, just flat no to any offer we would make. Can we even attract the best players anymore? There’s an increasing number of players out there who just flat won’t listen to us.

The fact remains that we need all the players we can get, attackers, midfielders and defenders. However, we kno Wenger is a shrewd buyer. He always foot drags when it comes to coughing out that kind of money for signings. He might not do it here, but lets hope he does, because we need those players.
