Perhaps I was wrong about Arsenal and Liverpool

Posted by Cathal Breathnach on August 16, 2009 | 35 Comments

So the first weekend of the Premier League has come to an end and boy was it a good one.

When I made my predictions for the upcoming season on Thursday afternoon, I was pretty confident with all my selections, however after this weekend’s action I am not so confident.

Like many other football bloggers, I predicted that Arsenal would find themselves missing out on a Champions League spot this season, with Manchester City the team to replace them in the top 4. After Saturday’s 6-1 win away to Everton, unsurprisingly, I am having second thoughts.

Arsene Wenger’s men played unbelievably well, with Cesc Fabregas running the show. There is no doubt that if they can keep that level of performance up for the entire season, they will be in with a cracking chance of winning their first title since 2004.

Meanwhile, I also predicted that Rafa Benitez’ Liverpool would be the ones lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of May. After today’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham, again, I am having second thoughts. It’s not just the result I am concerned about, it is the performance. They lacked ideas and the decision to bring on Andriy Vornin rather summed up their day. Poor.

I know some of you may be thinking I am over reacting, considering it’s only the first game of the season, but after this weekend, I would be far more confident of Arsenal winning the title rather than Liverpool. I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this. Comments below please.

Na mate, just keep on writing off the Arsenal’s chances of any success this season, along with the other so called experts and pundits, we love it when we’re underestimated. Just carry on bigging up the likes of maunre, chavski and l’pool.

what most people dont realise is that the arsenal boys are maturing and are developing a high level of team chemistry.
arsenal has an excess of attacking talent in Arshavin, van persie, eduardo, fabregas, rosicky, nasri, vela, walcott, wilshire and more.
if song, gallas and vermaelen can perform then arsenal will have a cracker of a season

arsenal has the best attacking players in the league followed by city. manu looks confused without tevez and CR7, chelsea’s strenght is midfield and defence they need more technically skilled players like xavi, iniesta, van persie, kaka and co.,

Too soon to predict anything, I didnt write us “arsenal” off before the first day of the season because I knew that the team is maturing, but I wouldnt dare to get carried away too soon. Equally I wouldnt write Liverpool off so soon because it is only ONE game…Rafa looks like he havent got a clue at times but I am sure they will be up there come the end of the season.
I just dont know about Man C, they dont seem to gel yet, but again it is too soon as once they get used to each other they will be a big thread to the top 4.
One thing I am 100% sure about is that this season will be one of the best seasons in the EPL. Just look at the newly promoted BFC and how they gave Man U a good run, it just sums up the very high standards of the EPL.

nothing can be predicted until 2nd half of the season .. although i really believe arsenal has got a whole lot to say this season. arsenal didnt prove anything last night, but wut they did is they delivere the message , and they did it right. nuff said.

These are young Invincibles. I hve bever doubted them though other Gooners have been so impatient abt not bringing any trophies and shouting AW shud go.
On Liverpool, they were lacking ideas and as usual theit long balls came to a solid wall. I wud say Sprurs will be a threat for to be among the 4. Man U are not the same without Ronaldo.
My predctions will go for The Gunners, Chelsea and Spurs

dino, david, agreed the season is far too young to be making predictions. But i think some of the big teams may have suffered due to recent international commitments. I just hope wenger doesn’t forget to strengthen. After a day like yesterday it may be easy to overlook a lot of things.

Too early mate! The result was good for confidence which the arsenal can build on. Good arsenal first team, but lacking in spare tyres in the event of injuries which is inevitable. I wanted a win but not by that margin, and when it happened;i was suprised and happy but concerned that wenger now has a reason not to reinforce. An injury free Arsenal have been deadly and have fizzld out and lost out eventually.

    Paxpaddy,
i would say liverpool lack spare tires…voronin? babel? Arsenal were without Nasri, Walcott, Rosicky, Diaby, Vela and still attacked well. I wouldn’t say they lack spare tires. In fact, when everyone is fit Wenger will have some selection issues.

I want every one to understand dat arsenal are up dis season 2 surprise their doubters so is up 2 arsenal wenger 2 just add one or two players due to injury and they are unbeatible as for liverpool,u shouln’t right them off becouse this is their first match of the season.Afterall barcelona lost their first match last season and end up winning trebble.

Just another knee jerk reaction from a fickle “blogger”…

Judge the Arsenal at the end of the season!!! The top 4 wont be broken (this season at least).

In my opinion, we shld never write liverpool off. Man utd have always started slowly but they won 3 pl titles in a row with cl and carling cup trophies to boot. More importantly, liverpool didnt start that strongly last season too, but were firing in the second half of the season. but i do agree they just dont look a good team against the spuds just now. Still arsenal’s result @ goodison was a great great win, we did show alot more fight and intend this season.

Take a rain check mate. Were are 1, that’s right, ONE game into the season. If you were a bookie would you pay out after one game? No, you’d be foolish too wouldn’t you?

The season is one game old folks, are we to assume teams will play the same every week? Nope.

I JUST LAUGH bloggers and retarded Arsenal hating pundits are doing us a major favour by counting us off. There is simply no pressure our whole squad and manager have been told they are inferior to teams like Liverpool. meanwhile us gooners know our gaffer .. we see our squad. We know all about Wilshere and the massive talent coming through ,Gibbs, Merida , jayEmmanuel SanchezWatt and more.
We have guys like Arshavin,Rvp,Fabregas,Gallas,Rosicky,Nasri,Sagnand Clichy in our ranks weve seen the strides made by guys like Song. We then read the crap thats written about our squad and simply understand ..that those bloggers and pundits have no insight whatsoever in our club and also a serious lack of footballing knowledge. The Everton game was only one game .. Im not basing my judgemennt of the team on that. But look at Pool and Manu … and tell me in what way our team is inferior to theirs. The most obvious would be to point out our defensive record… We have good defenders Clichy(only Evra is better or on par.. arguably cuntly 2, Sagna is easily the best Rb in the prem, Gallas is worldclass), we just defended like crap last year and we know it.

Its going to be tight, for sure. I can tell you one thing, the prem is going to London. If it is to Arsenal or Chelsea i can not say. By the way, City has zero chance of breaking in, this year.

i watched the game and feeling that liverpool need to buy 2 more players…commanding midfield or playmaker..and centre defender…lucas and javier are just too short to play with other epl players…liverpool need at least 2 player like yossi…yossi can only play 1 half …yossi2 to play 2 half…liverpool cannot play yossi from start…not enough stamnina

All the pundits predicted it would be a draw!
    i myself, well i wasn’t too sure

so we all came to see & then we saw – what a fantastic display, lets hope there’s plenty more.

Dont worry your not the only expert with the same predictable predictions – i am just interested how you came to your conclusions?
since Wenger we’v never been out of the C/L yet the same can’t be said of Liverpool who have never won the premiership either- so i never thought there was a danger of dropping out of the top 4 – but we are more concerned with winning it. even if we are up there after Xmas the next prediction from pundits will be we don’t have the experience to see it through & that is a preditction you can put your money on! nothing else can be concluded after just 1 game as it could all change after the second matches. it may be an idea to have your own opinion instead of following all the media speculation.

Its one game but lets face it the boys,..oops I mean men needed the confidence booster. They have been working on their chemistry and if you knew something about the INVINCIBLES squad is that they had Chemistry like family. like the had one mother and came from one house. Thierry was able to grow under the shadows of mr wright and DB10 etc. Thats been the key to our game the Chemistry. And thats what was paying off there and IF YOU NOTICED evey goal that came off the feet was not our TYPICAL “in the Box” goal….meaning AW has been drilling goal scoring and it worked. You cannot convince me Denilson was just trying his luck with that opener,or that fabregas was trying his luck on the 3rd with RVP screaming “let me have it”.Its simple ,the drill is “fire at will when you get to the box”.
And guess what its made us more undpredicatable because now we are developing that side of our game so we wont need to play in the box to win if we continue. But if you force us too, we will play the short passes and bet your money anyday you dont want to face Arsenal in the box. And secondly, Everton was a good litmus for the physical side of the game, we were bulldozed last season and we have definitely come into the season with a “WE AINT HAVING THAT” attitude. So its down to what has been happening in training.I beleive our downfall last season was that we spent our time training with the wrong formation etc with Adesomewhat and the likes. Still need to buy reinforcements to challenge

Don’t worry mate your just another “expert” in the wrong field. How can anyone believe that a team like liverpool who haven’t bought in anyone decent over the summer, lost one of their best players and rely on two players to perform have any chance. Arsenal on the other hand have an ever improving squad, got rid of the the trouble maker and the weak link in defence and replaced him whilst managing to (hopefully) get two great players back to fitness. We are the only summer improvers, the rest went backwards. Chelsea are old, United look thin on the ground without Tevez and Ronaldo and a couple of injuries. Anyway, last season arsenal where good for the second half no we are better, no chance of getting less that 4th. Face it pundits know nothing, no one sings arsenal’s praise, even on match of the day, they more or less put the result down to everton, meanwhile they excused the other top four’s poor performances down to first match issues.

liverpool looked poor, i’ve always thought benitez isn’t good enough to lift the title. selling alonso was a mistake, no one to create in the centre of the park, Gerrard looked his usual busy self but they may find themselves having to rebuild their team now. Charrager has never been good enough, always half a yard off the pace, dragging down strikers giving away stupid freekicks in dangerous areas and i think you’l see that even more as the season go’s on, but he’s un-droppable in the fans and managers eyes, that fact will cost them dearly in crucial situations this season. Rafa might find himself the first manager to be sacked this season as a result.

    August 17th, 2009 @ 4:46 pm

Man Utd are 100% not gonna be the team they have been the last 2 years. There is no way that any team can sell the best player on the planet and be as good as they were when he was firing in 25 – 40 goals per season. The fact that ronaldo’s contribution from the wing was so great, it took pressure off the central attacking midfielders (scholes, carrick , anderson) and the strikers. Man utd havent got that luxury this season, i’d be surprised if carrick, rooney, berbatov, nani and valencia get 40+ goals between them this season. Scholes, Nevile and Giggs are past the age of being able to compete at this level week in week out, they will struggle terribly to get more than a handfull of top class performances out of these players, they need to buy a creative midfielder who can compete asap!

Arsenals team have matured over the summer, it was only going to be a matter of time before Denilson, Bendtner, Song and co matured. Gallas and Vermalen look like a solid partnership, Clichy and Sagna are the best 2 Full backs in the league. Fabregas will soon be mentioned in the same breath as Ronaldo, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Xavi & iniesta, he is world class no doubt! Denilson held possession well on the weekend, Van persie was the best player in the premier league for spells last season. Almunia looked commanding, its all coming together in highbury, the champions league may be a little far fetched but i believe the title is within grasp even with 37 games to play, on the weekend, chelsea, liverpool and man u would have struggled and been beaten by arsenal, the only team i can see that could currently tame the gunners would be barca!

  32. daniel igali
    August 17th, 2009 @ 6:04 pm

It is rather early to predict the outcome of the league, but judging from what i saw against everton, we have the same chances as the other so called “big three”. Having said that, i am worried about our depth and concerned that if we get hit by injuries, we may falter yet again. Two or three solid additions in defense and an all and all attacker will not do us any harm, considering Europe, carling cup and the Challenge Cup. But I want those critics to continue to write us off. I do not have any expectations from the gunners, just enough to shut up the critics, thats all i ask!

    GOD AM I ANNOYED!

We win 6-1 at a top 6 side. They don;t actually get a look in until we’re 5/6 up and we get virtually ignored by the mainstream media. Even certain cretionous Arsenal fan sites put thw destruction of Everton down to a certain unsettled defender.

I’m on the verge of losing it big time.

If ManUre, redScouse, Chavski or even manCiteh had done the same, we’d have still been seeing the goals and how they are clearly the team to beat this year. We on the other hand are told well it’s all down to Lescott unsettling a whole team! AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH

Why do people like you bother to do this to yourselves. This whole crystal ball thing that you masochistically indulge in all the time makes you look dumb. Forget the predictions. You’re only hoping to add to your credibility by making them in the first place. The other side of that is that you loose it when reality bites. Not very intelligent at all is it?
