Liverpool still interested in former Manchester United defender

Posted by Cathal Breathnach on August 19, 2009 | 4 Comments

Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross has been linked with a number of clubs in recent days, however it looks as though Liverpool remain the only club with a genuine interest.

Shawcross, 21, is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and Rafa Benitez knows he needs to fill the void left by Sami Hyypia’s departure last season, so it would certainly make sense for Liverpool to make a move.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is obviously desperate to hold onto one of his most prized assets and he has today had this to say : “We want to keep Ryan among the younger players in the squad. He will be a big asset to us as this club looks to push on.”

Shawcross moved to the Britannia stadium back in 2007 on an initial one-year loan deal, however Stoke soon made that loan deal permanent. Shawcross cost Stoke just £2 million, however that £2 million would likely be  quadrupled if any move to Liverpool was to happen.

I personally think Shawcross would a superb signing for Rafa Benitez. I have no doubt that over the next few years, Shawcross will become a regular in the England set-up and I certainly wouldn’t be backing against him making England’s squad for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

What do you think? Would Shawcross be a good signing for Liverpool? Comments below please.

It looks like there’s no chance of it happening. Apparently we’ve just signed the Greek who played for Rangers a few years back for 2.5 million euro which is all the yanks have given us.

Hi. Being an ardernt liverpool fan , lets not put the entire blame on them. Let me say something.

The yanks have given benitez alot of $ , but its benitez himself that has misused the funds , and benitez himself has to take e blame. The yanks have given him money for skrtel(hit) , mascherano(hit) , torres(hit) ,ryan babel(miss) , lucas(miss) , ngog , glen(looks a hit) johnson , albert riera(hit) and benayoun(hit)..and ROBBIE KEANE(miss), and dossena(miss).

WHY MUST HE SPEND 20 MILLION ON KEANE AND 7 million on dossena??????? that amounts to 27 million..dossena buy was uncalled for when there was insua. so benitez could have used that 27 million pound to bid for d.villa!!(or someone with quality) ARSENAL BOUGHT ARSHAVIN FOR 12 MILLION POUNDS FOR GOD’S SAKE! and alonso wouldn’t have left if benitez didn’t pursue gareth barry! and yet he sold crouch! WHAT THE FUCK??

Ryan babel was also a flop, that 11 million to buy ryan babel , benitez could have atleast be used to buy arda turan , and im telling you , arda turan is a very underrated player!! Furthermore , 7 million for lucas was uncalled for , as there was momo sissoko! look how well he is doing in italy now! sissoko could fully adapt in EPL , it was benitez that didn’t gave him enough playing time. when owen was on a free why didn;t he sign him on a free transfer???? when he could resign fowler , why couldn’t sign owen? Rafael Benitez really frustrates me as a liverpool fan. granted , his tactics is always spot on but his man managing skills sucks! Cristiano ronaldo was never going to be the best footballer, but SAF’s man management turned him into one!

Overall , the yanks have given him alot of $ to spend , but benitez have misused it. His transfers are always flops , only riera , torres , mascherano , agger and skrtel have impressed.

My final opinion: Axe Rafael Benitez. Thank you so much for istanbul and fa cup 2006. but you have to go for all your fucking stupid transfers that your mum would be proud off.

and lets hire guus hiddink after the world cup , or maybe some other good attacking managers that bring flair and grit to the team! like fabio capello , frank rijkaard.

    Let me respond Aleef

    (1) We needed a left back at the start of last season as Insua wasn’t ready, I watched him in a couple of reserve games and he was lacking defensively, so we needed a option to fill in for the injury prone Auerilo, and Dossena was very highly rated in Italy, okay he failed but nobody gets every transfer right.

    (2) Keane was a mistake but hey we got rid quick enough and so only lost 3.5 million.

(3)Let’s get one thing clear Villa and Torres don’t work that well for Spain, Rafa plays one forward with three attacking midfielders. Would either Torres or Villa be happy sitting on the bench? Likewise where would Arshavin fit in the team? Not ahead of Torres or Gerrard or Kuyt so he plays left side ahead of Riera (who Rafa had bought 5 months earlier, what would that do for his confidence).

    (4) O the usual Alonso left because of the Barry affair!Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc (after, therefore, because of it, for those questioning it). Alonso didn’t leave because of the Barry situation mate he left because he was tapped up by Real Madrid. Think about it Xabi isn’t an automatic first choice for Spain, so what better way to give himself a chance at that in the year of the World Cup when Spain have their best ever chance than joining the Spanish FA’s and the coach’s darlings. As for Crouch he left to get regular first team football, would you have him ahead of Torres?

    (5) Babel can be awful but he can be great it is a huge season for him. Likewise Lucas (well he’s not exactly been great but has played well at times) the big teams were in for both of these players and both had great form coming to Liverpool (Babel was man of the tournament in the Euro u-21′s and Lucas had helped Gremio get to the final of South American version of the Champions League). Who’s to say Turan (Turkish winger) is good enough for Liverpool, this frustrates me with people like you, we should sign player A B and C and if they don’t do well flog them and get player D E and F.

6 Momo Sissoko was never the same player for us after his eye injury against Benfica and he was replaced by Mascherano not Lucas, you aren’t saying Momo’s better are you?

    (7) Why sign Owen, he’s turned his back on Rafa twice! Went to Madrid, went to Newcastle. Similarly where would he play? ahead of Torres? Get real! Fowler was needed cause we needed a cheap fix to get us goals now we have Torres!

    (8) Be realistic will you Ronaldo always had bags of talent, but for 3 years he flattered to decieve a la Ryan Babel, Ferguson kept faith and he was brilliant for them in 07/08 and did well enough in 08/09. Look what Rafa did with Torres, never profilic at Athletico but lethal at Liverpool.

    (9) So despite admiting Rafa’s tatically spot on you want rid. Well you forgot Reina, Kuyt, Alonso, Crouch and Insua in his good buys. When he buys a bad playe they’re normally gone within 18 months and usually without losing money. You state the yanks have given Rafa lot’s of money, er well that’s one way of looking at it but Rafa’s recouped them a lot of money as well mate. They promised him £20 million plus money from sales when he signed his new deal. So in terms those prats should understand ‘Show us the money’.

    (10) Your defence of the Yanks is laughable, they promised there was no debt on the club LIE. They promised to have a spade in the ground within 60 days in relation to the new ground, LIE. They promised that if Rafa wanted a player he’d have him, LIE (Barry, although I didn’t want him. Silva). They promised to back Rafa 100%, LIE, why were they talking to Klinnsman. Face facts Liverpool FC and it’s fans have been lied to time after time by these people. Has Rafa lied to us? I know who I trust and who the vast majority of Liverpool fans trust, as we say IN RAFA WE TRUST!
