What now for Chelsea?

Posted by on September 3, 2009 | 9 Comments

Abramovich Doesn't look too happy! Sure, what's new?I’m sure we’ve all heard today’s news that Chelsea have been banned by FIFA from making any new signings in the next two transfer windows.

Chelsea have received the ban after French side Lens made a complaint regarding the signing of Gael Kakuta. Kakuta, who is now a regular in the Chelsea reserve team, was illegally induced to sign for the London club back in the summer of 2007.

Both Chelsea and Kakuta have also recieved large fines and the player has now been banned from playing football for a total of four months. This was part of the statement released by FIFA earlier today :

“This decision confirms our aim to ensure contractual stability. It is an important ruling for football in general.”

I really don’t know what to make of the whole story. Chelsea obviously tapped up the player somewhat, however they did the same thing with Ashley Cole back in 2006 and they only received a fine then. So what makes this case any different? Well to tell you the truth, I’m not 100% sure.

Today’s decision will no doubt have massive consequences for Chelsea Football Club. We all know that the current squad isn’t the youngest and let’s be honest, they could have done with adding a few new younger players to the squad. I doubt the appeal will go too well so it looks like Carlo Ancelotti will have to make do with the players he has now.

What do you think? Have FIFA been a bit harsh on Chelsea? Comments below please.

one side of me is thinking well done to fifa for trying to stamp out tapping up but the other side is telling me that fifa have opened a can of worms because by banning chelsea they now have to ban other teams who have also been tapping up(that is if the team they are tapping up from complains).

    woops something went wrong there…
anyways now that fifa has opened the can of worms they are now obliged to impose similar bans to other teams who have been tapping up.

real have been known to be famous for doing this with a lot of their club officials talking about signing ronaldo (also allegedly having talked to christiano ronaldo). Obviously man utd will not report them because they got 80 million…

what about other players they might have signed by tapping them up.

what about other teams who have been doing the same stuff…damn this is crazy.

kinda harsh i reckon, bet an appeal will get the punishment reduced.

I think it’s a little harsh and reckon that the ban will be reduced to one window.
Kakuta is a real gem though so I suppose Lens were right to complain.

agree with doocy, but chelsea only got a fine last time because they got a warning so other clubs should also recive warnings if this drags on. that could then be the end of tapin up to sum extent anyway…

I enjoyed the headline in The Sun – You’re Not Signing Anymore!

LOL, that is a good headline.

Probably a little harsh, but the appeal may reduce the punishment. However, I think Chelsea have the squad depth to cope with the signings ban even if they’re made to serve the full sentence.
