All Things Football #2

adebayor stampAfter another pulsating week from the world of football its difficult to know where to start. So many games and so many talking points since last Monday’s edition of ‘All things Football’. Probably best to start with the spectacular failings of the Argentina national team.

As I said last week, Argentina desperately needed a result away to Paraguay on Wednesday night if they were to qualify for the World Cup automatically. Unfortunately for the Argentinians they lost 1-0 and it now looks as if Argentina may have to settle for a play off. The result also heaped even more pressure onto manager Diego Maradonna. Many now feel what Maradonna is doing as a manager may tarnish many peoples memory of him as arguably the world’s greatest ever footballer.  Next up for Argentina is bottom of the group Peru. If they cant beat a team who have conceed 32 golas in 16 games they can forget about the world cup.

The talking point of the weekend however came at Eastlands where Emmanuel Adebayor certainly left his ‘mark’ on Arsenal . Its probably not surprising this is more talked about then the football either, considering  the stamp on Robin Van Persie’s face and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate a goal in front of your former club’s supporters . Personally I don’t blame the Arsenal fans for throwing objects at Adebayor. A very disrespectful thing to do to the people that once cheered you. Also if that stamp had been a tad bit higher on Van Persire he could have lost on eye. A cowardly thing to do and in my opinion, it was an action that sums up the man.

Tottenham’s 100 % record came to an end this weekend at the hands of champions Manchester United. After in form striker, Jermain Defoe’s goal inside the first minute it looked as if Tottenham could upset the odds and actually win. Normal service was resumed just a mere 25 minutes later when Ryan Giggs scored a beautifully struck Free-kick. After that Man united simply chewed up Tottenham and spat them out running out 3-1 winners at White hart Lane.

There were also wins for Liverpool and Chelsea this weekend. Liverpool had a comfortable 4-0 win over Burnley at Anfield. One must feel the novelty of being in the top flight has started to wear off for Owen Coyle’s men as they suffered yet another heavy defeat. Meanwhile, Florent Malouda’s late, late winner at the Britannia secured Chelsea’s perfect record this season.

Finally, the Champions League returns to our TV screens this week with some cracking games. Chelsea take on Porto at Stanford Bridge while Manchester United travel to Turkey to take on Besiktas. The pick from matchday one for me though has to be Inter Milan v Barcelona, a game which sees Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto’o both return to their former clubs.
