"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game." – Bill Shankly

michael owen celebratesAnother terrific weekend of football saw some fantastic matches taking place.  Most notably the thrilling Manchester derby at Old Trafford where Manchester United defeated Manchester City 4-3 thanks to a controversial goal from Michael Owen deep into injury time.

Apart from the obvious fact that Man United get every decision they want/need from referees, (and that’s coming from a neutral)  I think we also learned that City must be taken seriously in regards to a 4th place finish.  To come from behind three times at Old Trafford isn’t easy and City fans must be feeling very hard done by after Owen’s sickening last-gasp equaliser.

I think Man City have really arrived. Any team which keeps coming back after going down at United are going to be formidable. Considering that Robinho and Adebayor were not playing and Santa Cruz is yet to play,  I think they are going to be very good this season. I’m not a big fan of Mark Hughes but he will make them solid defensively as he works longer with them and I also feel that they can indeed go on to qualify for the Champions league this season at the expense of Arsenal.

Another conversational moment from the weekend came in the Everton – Fulham game at Goodison Park. When an Everton ball boy went to retrieve the ball for El Hadji Diouf  as he was preparing to take a throw-in he  returned with the ball but as he went to give the ball to Diouf, instead of handing it to him he threw it into his stomach. This was something Diouf did not take too kindly to and the former Bolton man is now involved in a police investigation after he allegedly made a racist remark towards the boy.

Finally, Chelsea maintained their 100% start to the Premier League season after brushing past Tottenham 3-0 in Sunday’s London derby at Stamford Bridge. It was a game in which I feel clearly outlined Chelsea’s obvious title credentials. I tipped Chelsea at the beginning of the season to win the league and so far they’ve proved me right.
