Barca prepare to splash over £100 million on Rooney and Mascherano

Posted by on November 8, 2009 | 8 Comments

wayne rooneyWith the opening of the January transfer window fast approaching, the transfer rumours really are in full flow. Today sees Spanish giants Barcelona linked with an incredible £83 million bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and a £20 million bid for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano.

It is perhaps surprising to see Rooney, 24, linked with a move away from Old Trafford considering the fact it was only two days ago when the England frontman admitted he would love to finish his career at United. The News of the World claims that Barca are looking to exploit United’s massive debts with the £83 million bid, however it is unlikely that Sir Alex Ferguson will sanction any move.

Since joining United back in 2004, Rooney has scored over a 100 goals in all competitions for the club and I think it’s fair to say that should he leave, there would be some amount of dismay amongst the United faithful.

Meanwhile, Barca are also understood to be preparing a move for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano. The Argentine international was strongly linked with a move away from Merseyside in the summer, however for whatever reasons, nothing ever materialised. Barca boss Pep Guardiola is desperate to add to his squad in January and with money not a problem for the current European Champions, Mascherano is seen as a likely addition.

It is no secret that Mascherano, 25, has never fully seen eye to eye with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez since arriving at Anfield back in 2007 from West Ham. It is thought that Liverpool would jump at the chance to cash in on Mascherano in order to improve their strike force which, in my view, desperately needs adding to.

I personally think that should Barca make a bid of £20 million this January, Mascherano will be wearing the red and blue of the Catlan giants. There is no doubt he is a good player, however should Alberto Aquilani turn out to be in any way decent, they don’t really need Mascherano.

So, what do you think? I feel that Rooney will not be going but Mascherano will. Comments below please.

What is the thinking behind this article? Mascherano and Aquilani are completely different players. Masch is a ball-winning defensive midfielder whereas Aquilani is more your traditional trequartista. Suggesting that Aquilani could take over from Mascherano is like suggesting Jamie Carragher could take over from Fernando Torres.
    Also this:-
“It is no secret that Mascherano, 25, has never fully seen eye to eye with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez since arriving at Anfield back in 2007 from West Ham.”
It’s “no secret” to whom? There has never been the slightest suggestion that Mascherano has issues with Benitez and just saying it enough doesn’t make it true. This isn’t after all, Fox News is it? His head may have been turned in the summer by Barca’s tapping up or he may just have been suffering the pressure of being Argentian Captain and not guaranteed of making the World Cup. Either way, it’d take closer to £30m – £35m to prise him away. Liverpool are already suffering enough from losing Alonso’s passing ability, losing Mascherano’s steel would devastate the midfield completely. No point in scoring 3 goals a game if you concede 4, a-la Newcastle circa 1996 is there?

I don’t wish to be rude, but this article is basically suposition and make believe for the sake of it, isn’t it?
