Liverpool are no longer a force to be reckoned with

Steven Gerrard100/1 to win the Premier League this season. Says a lot really.

For years and years now, Liverpool have failed to live up to expectations on the domestic front, however this season it’s not just the domestic form that’s let them down, as we all know by now, they failed to progress from the Champions League group stages, leaving their season in tatters.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth, who currently sit slap bang last in the table, leaves Rafa Benitez’ men 14 points behind leaders Chelsea and more worryingly than that, 8 points off a Champions League spot. Benitez recently promised his critics that Liverpool will finish in the top four this season, however I really can’t see that happening at the moment.

Just last season, playing Liverpool was a tough match no matter who you were. This season, playing Liverpool  is like trying to eat a pistachio nut. Difficult to open up at first, but once you do, it’s not hard at all.

The loss of Xabi Alonso last summer has obviously played a huge part in Liverpool’s season to date, however I believe it’s too easy to blame your poor form on the sale of one player. Sticking with Benitez really does baffle me. I understand there are underlying financial issues involved, however whats the point in sticking with a manager who clearly isn’t doing his job?

When Gerrard and Torres are out injured, at least Liverpool have an excuse for their poor performances, however even with them in the side recently, they have looked a shadow of the side they were this time last season.

No matter what way you look at it, Liverpool are no longer a force to be reckoned with.

    Bit of an idiot to say that at Christmas aren’t you? HOW many times have LFC, MUFC and god knows how many other top clubs bit ‘know it all’ pundits on the ar*e come the month of May and the end of the season and shown that erm no, you DON’T actually know it all at all?

    You seem to forget in your pathetic eagerness to bury us with this atrocious excuse for an article that we haven’t yet played our FIRST TEAM for ANY period of time this season (including Aquilani AND a fit Gerrard and Torres) NOR have we had the same defence for more than a few matches AND you forget (or ignore? Like a typical Man U sc*m fan?)the fact that A:) Rafa’ has to sell to buy B:) that means the SQUAD WILL be weaker and C:) He’s also had to absorb the loss of Alonso (and DON’T be a fool like the others and say Rafa’ sold him – erm NO!! He WANTED to go – can you/should you keep a player like that? Think not), Arbeloa, Hyppia AND Keane with replacements of varying quality like Aquilani, Johnson, Kyrgiakos and N’gog – ANY team would struggle with such changes.

    Also – funnily enough – the MORE we lose – the more I’d back us to become a powerhouse once more NEXT season; Why? Because EVERY defeat and chance of not qualifying for the CL as well as going out of said CL brings the banks day of reckoning for FORCING out our despicable excuses for ‘owners’ due to inability to repay their loans to buy us and when THAT happens (and it WILL – make no mistake) I’d back us against ANYONE – Since our NEW owners will undoubtedly be rich, then maybe Rafa’ will FINALLY be backed to the level in the transfer market that he SHOULD have been but disgracefully hasn’t thus far.

    THEN and only THEN will your pathetic comparisms with Chelsea et al be VALID as until now he’s shopped with the loose change whilst Chelsea, City, United et al hog the wallet and yet he came within FOUR points of the league – If THAT is not a miracle in this day of ‘money not sport’ financebal…..erm football (and the most frentically, pathetically overhyped league in the world) what is?

    I’ve seen our history son, I’ve SEEN us halfway down what is now the Championship when Shanks arrived, I’ve seen us clean up the board winning LEAGUE title after LEAGUE title AND dominating EVERY other competition AND Europe all at once with teams over 3/4 decades whose power, grace and ability to dominate EVERYTHING at once AND renew themselves year on year the Manc’s, Chelsea et al can only dream of and I’ve seen us fall again with the onset of Souness and the destruction of the ONE club system in the world more perfectly geared to continuing success than Ajax – I saw us nearly relegated under Souey, I saw us STORM back and win EVERY trophy bar the league (and damn near that) in the past decade including a SECOND treble (yes we won a Treble first) AND the European Cup from the most impossible of all positions in May 2005, I saw us dominate everything with success that looked unending in 1988 with a team that passed like the Arsenal of 2004 and DEFENDED like the Chelsea of 2005 and which was FAR deadlier than both and at that time WHO could see Liverpool’s end? But 5 years later come 1993 – it was all gone and we’ve yet to get it ALL back again – but we will – of that you can be certain.

    Incidentally at just the same time – or a couple of years later as we stormed to the title AGAIN in 1990 – Did you support the Manchester United fans who chanted ”Fergie Out”? Did you sympathise with THEM as they protested, wanted the board sacked, SLATED Ferguson with an absolute BARRAGE in papers etc, did you know as the WHOLE nation did – that he’d had it if they lost to Forest in the FA Cup in January of that year? Did you see the ’3 years of excuses………..Tara Fergie banner’ and what did United do? (and for another damn near FOUR years before they got what they wanted) – They STUCK by their man and lo & behold – WHERE are they now? THAT is why we stick by Rafa’ who is at least the equal of the early Ferguson and MAY become his modern equivalent IF given the time and resources – A better manager for LFC does NOT exist at present.

    Club’s Times (when it’s just RIGHT that they win the BIG trophies) come and go; And after 20 years off the top – whose to say we WON’T come back hmm? In all the stuff I’ve seen – I’ve seen us win TEN league titles, 2 UEFA Cups, THREE European Cups, FOUR FA Cups, Countless Charity Shields and European Supercups – Even THIS decade I’ve seen us carry off a trophy haul that other clubs would struggle to match in TWO decades – never mind just over half of one!! I saw us in 1989 at our darkest hour come within a whisker of the Double and chase down a NINETEEN point lead from March to May and I saw us WIN the Damn thing in 1981 after being THIRTEEN points behind at Christmas – how many back are we now? Ah yes Think on it son. Liverpool aren’t gone, Liverpool will NEVER be gone and one thing you can be certain of is that we WILL be back and probably sooner, FAR sooner than you and many others think………………

    So a bit of perspective maybe yes? Being halfway down the Premier League with HALF a season to play is a problem – NOT a crisis; ESPECIALLY when WE were the Runners up in said league last season so we KNOW our quality hmm? Being where NEWCASTLE or MIDDLESBROUGH are now or where the likes of Forest and Norwich our one time regular sparring partners are now – Or indeed where WE were when Shanks First came half a century back – Now THAT is a problem and a far, FAR greater one than that which we face now. We will improve – don’t doubt it – we WILL improve and probably end Fourth quite comfortably as Arsenal did last season from a similar position to this now (who knows with all the defeats EVERYONE is suffering? We may even end HIGHER than Fourth, you just can’t tell).

    Oh and before you say it – The LEAGUE Titles I saw us win? They were EXACTLY the same as the Premier League in all bar name and trophy – JUST as hard, with as many games (sometimes HARDER with more) to play to prove yourself the best over the season and in fact, we OFTEN did far better in seasons where everyone beat everyone else – erm what’s happening now? – An omen maybe?

    But DON’T fall for the ridiculous ‘Never won the Premier League’ argument when the Premier League is just the old, the original Division 1 under a new name and with another style of packaging and THAT we DO know how to win – The greatest trick the so called ‘Premier League’ EVER played on unsuspecting (and it must be said, stupid) football supporters was to convince them that it was different, somehow superior than the old Divison 1 – except in terms of marketing (where it is FAR superior) and refereeing (FAR worse), it isn’t – it’s 38 games between 20 teams over 9 months of a season and consists of the top teams in the land with promotion and relegation to and from the next highest division – Now just WHAT does that sound like to you? Exactly – OLD Division 1 that’s what – NO hype, NO Glamour, NO ‘Greatest League in the World/EPL/”Prem’, Prem’, Prem’ ” crap, – just the plain old Highest Division of English Football;

    NOW tell me that Liverpool Have NEVER won THAT and thus don’t deserve respect when everyone ADMITS that United share THEIR record for titles won? How could that be WITHOUT Division 1 titles on BOTH sides – I thought THEY didn’t Count? Precisely, of course they do; That’s why Liverpool and THEIR records/past achievements DO deserve respect as do omens from what they’ve done in the past applied to the Premier League;

    Here’s 2 for you, in March 1989, Liverpool were 19 points off the top of the league but finished LEVEL on points with Arsenal ONLY losing the title on goal difference after THAT goal from Michael Thomas in May 1989 and in 1982, LFC were THIRTEEN points adrift of the League’s head come Boxing Day when they lost 1 – 3 at Home to Manchester City and yet come May? They’d WON the league and won it by 8 or so points so yes it CAN be done. And just to show it’s not us – ARSENAL clawed back a 10 point United lead to take the title in 1997/1998, UNITED did the same to a 10 point NEWCASTLE lead in 1995/1996 and in 1985/1986 Liverpool chopped to nothing a THIRTEEN point United lead from the end of November to win the title by 4 points or so with United nowhere in the race come May;

    So just WHO is to say matters CAN’T change back in our favour again as quickly as they’ve got away from us? The first title after a LONG time away ALWAYS is hard to win and is often unexpected (ask United who spent TWENTY SIX years trying for it and then won it when Aston Villa lost with them not even playing at the time) Whose to say Liverpool can do nothing in the nineteen remaining league games during the second half of the season and whose to say just WHAT the limits are to what they may do? NO-one that’s who, we shall see just WHAT Liverpool are made of from Boxing Day on in – but I think the answer may surprise more than a few so called pundits my friend and put it this way – I hope you like the taste of egg on your face as LFC will give you PLENTY come May for what you’ve just said in this article;

    Watch and learn, we haven’t gone from runners up to relegation candidates in 6 months or so and the rest of English Football is about to find out precisely that – Liverpool ALWAYS pull out surprises when they’re down or No-one expects it from them and coming from them now will be one of the BIGGEST of all such surprises – You’ll see soon enough………………………………

    You really do defeat your own argument. Last season we were a force to be reckoned with, now we are rubbish. Think about it! Do people become rubbish at there jobs over such a short period?

    Last term we finished 2nd with our hightest points total since the premiership started. That was with the same manager and the same players, apart from Xabi Alonso. Xabi had a child on the way and wanted to return to Spain.

    Do you really believe that in 7 months Rafa has become a bad manager and the players are suddenly terrible?

    The most obvious answer is normally the right one, and that is that we are suffering a bad run of form, Gerrard is clearly carrying an injury, we are bereft of confidence, but we aren’t suddenly a bad team.

    Everyone calling for Benitez’s head, you are just idiots. You have to look at the long term picture, not just 3 or 4 months. We are having a bad run. Every team has them, but especially clubs like LFC who try to punch above their financial weight and compete with much richer clubs.

    Benitez has had less money to work with than Chelsea and Man Utd so he has had to create a strong first 11 but at the expense of a strong squad, because he can’t afford both. When 4 or 5 of the first 11 aren’t playing well, we don’t have the quality to replace them. But that isn’t Rafa’s fault. You can’t expect him to catch Man UTd with a net expenditure of £15m per year over the last 5 years.

    The lazy media often state he has spent £280m, Tony Cottee was at it on Sky Sports at the weekend, but the facts speak for themselves, he has only spent £96m more than he has sold during his reign and in todays market, £96m of investment, doesn’t turn a team who finished 30 pts behind Man Utd before he took over into title winners.

    Get behind the team and get behind the manager.
