Liverpool bench-warmer finally on his way out of Anfield?

Posted by on January 5, 2010 | 2 Comments

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel has this evening been linked with a move to Birmingham City.

The Dutch international has struggled to nail down a first team place at Anfield ever since he arrived on Merseyside back in 2007.

The 23-year old has been strongly linked with a move away from Liverpool over the past 6 months with the likes of Tottenham and Bayern Munich thought to be interested.

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish knows he has money to spend during this month’s transfer window and Babel is now understood to be his number one target.

Babel has previously admitted he may look for a move away from Liverpool if Rafa Benitez continued to leave him out of his starting eleven. Nothing has changed on that front, so I really think this move could happen.

With this being a World Cup year, Babel knows he needs to be playing week in week out if he is to make the Dutch squad which travel to South Africa this summer. At Birmingham, he will no doubt receive first team football, however he may have to take a pay-cut, which may prove an obstacle in any deal.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this one. Comments below please.

It seems Rafa wants to keep him by rejecting a £8,000,000 Birmingham bid. Benitez has played him inconsistently which has never helped Babel settle in, but lacking the work rate as he does you have to question why Alex McLeish is interested in him!
