Is Patrick Vieira right …. Can Manchester City still win the title this season?

Posted by on January 8, 2010 | 8 Comments

Patrick Vieira was introduced to the media as a Manchester City player for the first time this afternoon and the former Arsenal captain is confident he is joining a club who are still in the title race this season.

The 33-year old has signed an initial 6 month deal at Eastlands with the option of another 12 months if all goes to plan.

To start today’s press conference, Vieira told the gathered media that he knows he’s not 20 anymore but he also knows he’s not 45. When asked how far he thought Roberto Mancini’s men could go this season, Vieira had this to say : “I strongly believe we are not out of the race to win the title. I am sure we can do it.”

Manchester City currently sit just ten points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea with a game in hand and the majority of bookmakers have them priced at just 25/1. As a City fan myself, I would love to agree with what Vieira has said this afternoon, however I just can’t see us lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of May. I, like thousands of other City fans would be more than happy to see us break into the top four this season and then maybe next season, we could be a serious title contender.

The problem MC (and all the teams around them) face is that to make up the ground they need all three of Arsenal, ManU and Chelsea to fall apart. Making up seven points (give or take) over the last half of the season is tough but not impossible if you are chasing a single team, as any team can hit a rough patch, but to expect all three of the teams hovered around the top to tank? I wouldn’t bet on it.

On top of that, there are four teams approximately tied with City. Even if the top 3 fall apart, you also need to hope none of them play better than you over the final stretch.

    Not a hope.
City will do well to finish 6th this year.
    No offence lads.

Well under Roberto Mancini they have won all 3 games to nil so far! Even with Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal not stamping their foot down this season, I don’t see Manchester City entering the title race. Their defence isn’t great and their performances so far have been inconsistent. Mancini needs to fix both of these before they consider themselves as serious title contenders.

Right now United are an overachieving mid-table side, and City are a championship squad that have been underachieving. Chelsea will tire as they are an old squad and they are slow and Ancelloti’s tactics are now understood. Arsenal have no reliable central striker and are all boys. Tottenham are riding their luck, and their defense is weak. Liverpool are a dying team, like United, poisoned by debt, with no real money. So yes I would be surprised if City didn’t win or come very close to the title. They have the money to really polish their squad when perhaps it is already the best in the League.

Arsenal will win the Premiership. Viera was a superb player and an excellent captain while he was at Highbury but why wouldn’t Arsenal welcome him back. He is too old. Age is no bad thing and possibly Arsenal could do with some of that age and experience now but City are definitely too far off the chase at this moment and, as had been said before, they would require a major collapse of all the teams above them to get near it this year.

What will Paddy Vieira make of dicks like Bellamy, Robinho, Ireland and our dear dear friend Adebeyor ?

Wenger does not like to bring in former players back. I support this as it will be a warning to our current players not to go to others clubs because you won’t be welcome back. Just ask Hleb and Flamini who are having a miserable time since leaving the club.
