Man United want Real Madrid midfielder, Liverpool interested in Man City defender & Spurs chase Croatian keeper

Good old Sunday, eh?
When it comes to transfer rumours, the Sunday papers rarely disappoint, do they.
Today sees a few intriguing rumours spring up including Manchester United’s apparent attempts to bring Real Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra to Old Trafford.
Even the most ardent United fan would have to admit, the current Premier League Champions have struggled this season in the middle of the park. They have had a number of injuries but so have a lot of sides around them, so maybe it’s time Sir Alex Ferguson brought a new midfield general to the club.
Diarra, 28, has failed to make an impact at the Bernabeu since the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini to the hot seat last summer and it is understood he is desperate to leave the Spanish giants as soon as possible. His agent recently admitted that a January move is possible and I personally would love to see a player of Diarra’s undoubted ability arrive in the Premier League in the coming weeks.
Another rumour which caught my eye today was Liverpool’s interest in Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha. The former England under-21 international has made only a handful of appearances at Eastlands since the Arab billionaires arrived at the club and with Liverpool’s current defensive problems, this move may well happen.
It is reported that a six-month loan deal may be struck later this week, however we’ll have to wait and see on that one. With Glen Johnson likely to be out for a couple of months, I really feel Rafa Benitez should move sooner rather than later for Onuoha.
Finally, Tottenham’s search for a new keeper goes on. Every day, it seems a new name is linked with a move to White Hart Lane (Ben Foster, Robert Green, David James etc;) however as of now, Harry Redknapp has yet to make a move.
Stipe Pletikosa, the Croatian and Spartak Moscow number one (well he doesn’t wear the number one shirt for Spartak, but he does play) is the latest name to be linked with a move to North London. The 30-year old is considered by many as one of the best keeper’s in Europe and in my opinion, this would be an unbelievable signing for Spurs.
Heurelho Gomes is yet to prove me wrong and I think signing Pletikosa would save Spurs 5-10 goals a season. Anyway, I’m curious to hear what you have to say on all the above rumours.
Comments below please.

If you think Gomes hasn’t proved you wrong, you either don’t watch or don’t understand football.

Jim, I will admit that Gomes has improved this season, however I still think Spurs could do better than Gomes.

TBH the general concensus amongst Spurs fans is that after his shaky start (the media doesn’t seem capable of seeing beyond this) Spurs now have a pretty decent ‘Keeper, so any incomer would have to be content with starting on the bench and being the Challanger. Indeed, the general analysis of the David James rumour is that he wants 1st team football to gain a place in the WC squad, but he has little chance of displacing Gomes unless due to injury (if he arrives).

Cathal obviously knows nothing about the game. Gomes has been unbelievable this season. So he thinks someone who is not even playing regularly for his club is better than one of the top premiership keepers. We dont even know how stipe will adjust to Prem life.

Gomes is a top top keeper.. The best we’ve had since I can remember.. The 80′s.. Just look at some of the saves he has made this season.. If u look back through this season, gomes has earnt us so many points.. His save a Pompey was world class.. Not many keepers wouldve saved that deflected kaboul free kick.. That is up there with banks/pele save.. As many ex keepers have already compared the two.. I guess there’s a few people out there like the media that have had it in for Gomes from day one and are maybe too stubborn to change there opinion..

Dee, I appreciate your opinion, but from what I have seen (and admittedly I haven’t seen much because I am not a Spurs fan) he always leaves me with the impression that he is prone to an error.
He makes some unbelievable saves, however I still think Spurs could do with a new keeper
January 10th, 2010 @ 10:37 pm
I wouldnt swap Gomes for any other keeper in the premiership. PSV fans thought he was the best in the world. All keepers make the occasional error and Gomes has shown incredible charracter to come back from a shaky start and a barrage of abuse from the media. He’s earnt the right to be our number 1 and i only want to see a young keeper come in. I suggest you watch him over a period of several games before you make a judgement. Other than that youre about spot on

Even after his terrible start to his spurs career he finished last season as third best keeper only behind Cech and van der sar, did you know that ? Lets see what the stats say at the end of this season, judging by his performances so far of which you admit you have not seen ?? Im confident he will be in the top two keepers in the prem, probably number one.
Pletikosa is a top keeper im sure and if he comes to us then thats great competition for gomes….Silly comments on shaky foundations….COYS
January 10th, 2010 @ 11:15 pm
finished third behind van der sar and cech??? urmmm, I think you’ll find that reina and van der sar finished equal on clean sheets. gomes makes some great saves but, as is often the case with such keepers, it’s usually because his positioning is poor in the first place. You don’t see van der sar, cech, buffon, reina etc making amazing saves week in week out because they read the game so well. And surely if redknapp is looking for a new keeper that says everything.

Gomes has always been a great shot stopper but had weaknesses at dealing with crosses, handling (punching when he could have caught, dropping the ball when he has caught it) and poor distribution on anything but short throws.
This season he has made massive improvements in all those areas and not only has cut out the silly mistakes from his early time but is now a real commanding keeper
There’s no way a keeper not used to the PL and who has been out injured for best part of a year is going to arrive to take his place and it would be stretching the imagination too far to think he would
Sorry but you seem to be talking about the Gomes of early last season not the top keeper we have now

As a SPURS fan I have to agree with all of the above posts, and feel qualified to make a judgment, unlike the writer of this article who readily admits he isn’t a fan of the club, those that watch him week in and week out know what a world class keeper he is and saves us many points a season.I don’t believe there are many better in the premiership and I personally wouldn’t swap him with Reina or Cech. The character he has shown to come back from the crisis he suffered last season is just awe inspiring, those keeper’s mentioned earlier have all played under strong defences,Gomes gives us a strong defence now and we have a better defensive record than Liverpool.Apologies Matt I seem to have echoed nost of what you have said!!

Gomes has made some oustanding saves this season and has benefitted from a better defence in front of him.
That comment about Cech and Reina not needing to make great saves is utter rubbish, Cech has made many a mistake htis season, particularly on set pieces. Reina’s kicking has been suspect and has had to make plenty of good saves just to attone for the errors.
Gomes IMO is, on current form, the second best keeper in the premier league, behind a keeper that has been performing out of his skin, Shay Given.
January 11th, 2010 @ 1:37 am
furthermore, Redknapp is looking for another keeper because our sub keeper jumped on a motorbike and unfortunatly Button isnt ready and Alnwick isn’t up to the standard we are looking for.
January 11th, 2010 @ 1:50 am
anyone that says gomes hasnt proved them wrong doesnt watch football. he saves about 2-3 goals that most other keepers would concede every game. probably not 1 person here has even seen pletikosa play
January 11th, 2010 @ 2:53 am
gomes is top shelf! i love the octopus, and the character he’s shown to come back from that start to be one of the best is exactly what our club needs to be up there challenging!
January 11th, 2010 @ 3:10 am
Cathal – how could you time the nature of your comments re: Gomes any worse? Who was the last keeper you remember keeping 5 consecutive clean sheets for us or 4 consecutive clean sheets in the top flight? Your idea that he is somehow substandard has been absolutely proven wrong and if you can’t admit it, you’re not open-minded enough to write such articles.
It’s one thing to hold an opinion, but quite another to cling onto it once it’s been proven to be nonsensical.
January 11th, 2010 @ 4:27 am
Cathal Breathnach you plonker. Still trying to defend your stance in the face of so many who tell you you are quite obviously wrong. Are you related to old lizard face wenger? I’ve had a season ticket at spurs for nearly twenty years and gomes is the best keeper we’ve had in all that time. He hasn’t let in a goal in our last five games. Is that good enough for you? I wouldn’t swap him for any keeper in the world right now, and neither would any of the other yids who have posted. It’s their opinions I respect, not your ill informed rubbish.
January 11th, 2010 @ 6:54 am
Every spurs fan will agree with me when i say he is on of, if not the, best reaction save keepers to date. That said, he still lacks in knowledge of when to some and when to stay. Since day one he has looked shakey with corners and quite honestly he hasn’t improved on it. That said…I wouldn’t think of replacing him.
January 11th, 2010 @ 7:55 am
as a spurs season ticket holder i am speaking with understanding gomez,he was bad in his first season and cost us many games, harry employed tony parks goalkeeping coach and now gomez is fantastic he is top of the goalkeeping stats has had four clean sheets.if he plays as well for the rest of the campaign the doubters will leave him alone.harry needs another goalkeeper we have no cover since carlos was knocked which was a real shame

Gomes is world class.
The press have it in for Gomes because he had a bad patch when we first bought him. The fans love him.
January 11th, 2010 @ 12:21 pm
I THINK GOMES IS ONE OF THE BEST KEEPERS IN THE PREMIERSHIP JUST BEHIND SHAY GIVEN!!
January 11th, 2010 @ 12:25 pm
I accept all the comments, I really do.
I admit I have made a poor judgement but I can only put that down to the fact that I am not lucky enough to be able to go to White Hart Lane every weekend and see Gomes play.
Keep the comments coming
January 11th, 2010 @ 4:53 pm
Cathal you are a plank!!!!! As an Irishman and Spurs fan I am bored of the drivel you write about our team as a whole or individually. The one article that comes to mind was recently wrote gushing bout how good Keane is blah, blah.
How many games have you seen him play in this season, just like Gomes I bet(not many). The pre-Liverpool Keane seems to be the one you were writing bout not the headless chicken thats been running round WHL most of this time round. Would rather have seen Pavlova given a proper run out but hey I’m not Harry Redschnapps.
January 11th, 2010 @ 8:29 pm
I love when cathal writes such a controversial article . It really makes me laugh when I see a journalist , or whatever you call yourself , change his opinion and sell himself out so quickly without defending himself or even trying to rebuttle .

Gomes is certainly on current form the best keeper in the league. Following what can only be described as an embarassing start to his Spurs career he has recovered to win the hearts of all Spurs fans!! What a player!!
A negative image is portrayed of players such as Gomes following a few mistakes. Dixon, Hansen and Lawrenson watch a 10 minute clip of each game every week and then talk complete rubbish about the events of the match. As they don’t see 90 minutes of each game they make weak judgements on players and therefore fail to provide accurate punditry on them. Obviously the armchair fans at home take their comments as gospel and then procede to make their own statements on these players as if they are an authority on them!!
Aaron Lennon for instance!! If the media is to be believed he is essentially a one trick pony who still can’t cross the ball!! I’d like you to find a single season ticket holder at White Hart Lane who shares these views!! No matter how well Lennon plays, in the eyes of the MOTD pundits, Theo Walcott will always be the first choice right winger for England!!

tbh i think gomes isnt good enough 4 the premiership i think spurs should go to celtic for boruc hed b a snip at 6 or 7 million luse mcgeady 8 million 2 big time players mcgeady would rip up the likes of nelow 10 teams and do a very good job against the big boys
