There haven’t been many positive headlines regarding Manchester United in recent weeks due to the current financial situation at the club.
Wednesday’s Carling Cup defeat to neighbours Manchester City didn’t help, however today saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s men hammer Hull City 4-0 at Old Trafford to move above Arsenal and Chelsea to the top of the Premier League table.
Wayne Rooney scored all four goals for United this afternoon leaving the England international five goals clear in the goalscoring charts this season (don’t forget to vote in the poll on the left of this post).
The 24-year old is now as short as 4/6 with most bookmakers to win the award for top goalscorer this season and to honest, that looks superb value.
There has been talk in recent weeks that Rooney may be on his way out of Old Trafford in the summer, with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona both believed to be interested. Today’s performance is proof that United would be screwed without Rooney. He is one of the only United players who can score goals on a regular basis and I know this may sound harsh but I honestly believe United would be a mediocre side without Rooney in it.

That was a fantastic performance from Wayne Rooney against Hull on Saturday. I agree with you Cathal that United would look a mediocre side without him right now. They haven’t produced their best performances this season and Rooney is almost single-handedly keeping United’s title defence alive. He can’t win the league alone though and right now United are going to fall short unless a number of players increase their performances.
