Liverpool not giving up on £12 million striker just yet + Will £100 million be enough for Liverpool to sell?

Posted by on January 24, 2010 | 15 Comments

This January transfer window has been pretty dull by all accounts.

So far, the most notable deals to go through have been those of Patrick Vieira to Manchester City  and Sol Campbell back to Arsenal. That really isn’t saying much, is it?

With just over a week to go now before the transfer window slams shut, the papers are really full of it today.

The Kenwyne Jones to Liverpool rumour just won’t go away. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce called Liverpool disrespectful earlier this week for their pursuit of the player, however that doesn’t seemed to have quelled Liverpool’s interest for the player.

Rafa Benitez is desperate to add to his attacking options before next Monday’s deadline and it would seem he has his heart set on Jones. Bruce has said there is no chance that Jones, 26, will leave the Stadium of Light, unless someone coughs up £12 million.

Liverpool, as we know, are skint, so where they are going to get that kind of money between now and next Monday is anyone’s guess. Perhaps the sale of Ryan Babel may raise somewhere near the £10 million mark which could lead to Liverpool making a move. Only time will tell on that one.

Liverpool could clearly do with some money. They can get their hands on £100 million in the summer if they want it. All they would have to do is hand over their most prized asset, Fernando Torres to the world’s richest club, Manchester City.

Yes, reports today have claimed that Roberto Mancini will be giving a bottomless pit of money to spend in the summer and his number one target is the one they call, El Nino. It has been claimed that Torres, 24, may have to be sold should Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season and Liverpool fans certainly don’t need telling that finishing outside the top 4 is a definite possibility.

It would be fascinating to see if Liverpool did finish outside the top 4 this season, would Torres be on his way out of Anfield. At this moment and time I just can’t imagine Torres wearing a City jersey but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

What do you think? Comments below please.

As Torres said he’d never play for another English team, this made up story is laughable.

I’m writing from a purely objective vewpoint here but I have to say I think Liverpool, should they not find outside investment, are in a whole world of trouble.

Failing to reach the knockout rounds this year in the CL has lost them a cool £40m already. Not qualifying next year either would certainly force them to sell a star or two.

Fans are always naive enough to believe that their star players will never go to a rival but in truth they will only ever follow the money and the glory.

If Man City are 4th and Liverpool get an obscene offer on the table for Torres, I think the board would be happy to sell him.

I thinkh Liverpool needs to buy Jones, and than sell Babel, than clubs interested would not think Liverpool needs money from Babel’s sale and would pay more for him, as there is interest.
100 mil. is not enaugh for Torres, club would show lack of ambiton to accept it from City, 150 mil. or more would be unreasenable to reject.

    3. John, with regards to Liverpool losing 40M by not reaching the knockout rounds of the champions league is way off mark. Liverpool budgets were based on them reaching the last 16 which means they are only 2.5M down on their predictions. If they go on to win the Europa League they have done better than they budgeted for.

However I do agree that being placed outside the top four will be a problem for them, not just this year but for years to come as they will have reduced capital as a result.

I would not be surprised if there is a shock purchase in whats left of the transfer window with one of the directors selling his assets. There may be one big buy, with payments to follow.

John, where the hell do you get 40M for not qualifying for the knock out rounds from? They got double the amount for the group stage as a result of finishing 2nd and not 4th in the prem. Also, next year they get an extra 20M in sponsorship from standard chartered and other sponsors. Fact is if we do not get 4th then financially we are not that much worse off. As for Torres to City…Hilarious…Torres is not money orientated hence he wont go there.

    Dear John . . . Boom, Boom,

Who is writing from a purely objective view. Where on earth do you get the figure of 40 Mio from for not qualifying for the knock out rounds. The winner only gets 36.8 Mio for playing in all the rounds. TV rights money is split through the four English qualifying clubs with a weighting for position in the domestic league in the previous season, irrespective of progress this season.

If you are going to make a statement objectively then please use Facts and not numbers that you either 1. made up, or 2. copied from someone elses ill informed comments

    Many Thnaks

John how do you know the knockout stages have cost £40m? You don’t know the facts. Go to UEFA.com and download the financial pdf. It is the group stages where the bucks are made. Hamburg made more cash than LFC in the post-group stage of the Europa than we did getting to the Quarter-finals. But you know facts/good story etc

    hi everyone..
    rafa has to hear this..
Jones is not good for liverpool? Why?Because his dribble is not good, not fast, just depend on his physical body only.

what is important liverpool have to buy a player which is superb in dribble, fast, and very cool while playing. For example like messi..

so rafa, please find a player which has the quality that i have mentioned..

furthermore, rafa..you have to start build a young player which can replace gerrard or torres as for future plan..please use pachecho and call back nemeth..because i see a quality on both players while palying at singapore previuosly…in midfield, please use spearing because i believe he can be a “new gerrard” if he always play for 1st team..

I’m a staunch Liverpool fan, but even I consider 100m for a player a ridiculous offer. If it happens, Benitez should consider it. I think Torres is perhaps the best striker in the world, but even he isn’t irreplaceable. 4 or 5 world-class players could come in for that amount of money – that’s almost half a first-team! So, Benitez should keep an open mind and listen to the offers one on condition – the owners let him reinvest most of the funds from Torres back into the squad. None of that “you sold Torres but you still have only 5m to spend crap”.

To the Grammar Nazi: I’d have thought you would know that punctuation and use of majuscules or miniscules are just as much a part of grammar as tenses. Typing in all lower case is something you are guilty of yet is just as bad as the ‘crime’ of which you complained!

To Cahaya Malaysia: Wake up and smell the Malaysian coffee my friend! If Rafa could afford a Lionel Messi he’d be delighted. Stop living on cloud cuckooland and recognise that we have a very tight budget and can only buy within our means. Kenwyne Jones is good value for £10-12m, certainly about as good as we can expect to find in the January window at that price. Needs must my friend!
