Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard should leave Liverpool this summer

Posted by on April 11, 2010 | 79 Comments

It looks as though Liverpool won’t be playing Champions League football next season and I’m sure many Liverpool fans will be wondering if they can hold onto their key men for next season.

This summer is bound to be very busy at Liverpool, with the American owners likely to do a runner and Rafa Benitez also tipped to leave Anfield but what about Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard?

No matter who you support, you would have to agree that both players are far too good to be playing Europa League football next season and I for one am hoping they both leave Liverpool. Obviously Liverpool fans will be hoping the pair stay but if they (Torres & Gerrard) have any ambition at all, they should leave.

Gerrard, 29, has said in the past that he wants to achieve things in his career but I’m afraid, he is running out of time and if he stays at Liverpool, he won’t be winning anything. Inter Milan and Real Madrid have been linked with the England midfielder in the past and I’m sure those two will be monitoring his situation all summer long.

Meanwhile, Torres is still quite young at 26 and if Liverpool were to sell him in the summer, they would no doubt receive upwards of £50 million for the Spaniard. The former Atletico Madrid striker is too good to be playing for Liverpool in my opinion and the sooner he leaves the club, the better.

What do you think? Obviously all you Liverpool fans will disagree with me. Feel free to leave your comments below.

Just what team do you support Cathal? You obviously are a myopic idiot. You are one of those fair weather fans who doesn’t know head or tail about the game. I bet you don’t even know the history of Liverpool or the English league for that matter. Go back to your playstation and quit writing blogs of such absurdity.

  18. Andy
    April 11th, 2010 @ 11:44 PM

Yeah and Rooney should leave Man u, Fabregas leave Arsenal and Ronaldo leave Real Madrid because they don’t look like winning anything. It’s idiots like you who are killing the game Cathal, remember Matt Le Tisser who stayed at Southampton despite being wanted by much bigger clubs. He remains a legend and rightly so because he was loyal to Southampton. To all those slating Rafa, yes this season has been bad, but in the past 5 seasons we’ve won the CL, been to another final, lost in a semi, won the FA Cup, and lost the league to a refs decision (Stoke at home, why was Gerrard’s goal disallowed? I’ve never understood it) and the width of a post (Gerrard hit the post at Stoke). So is Rafa to blame for this season? Partly. Are injuries to blame? Yes both Torres and Gerrard either got injured or worsened injuries whilst on international duty, not to mention the defensive injuries at the start of the season or Johnson’s injury just when we were grinding out results around christmas. And are the owners to blame? YES, they promised Rafa 20 million pounds plus player sales, another big fat lie. I’m not denying Rafa has made mistakes, Aqualini was/is still a huge gamble for someone with that injury history. Lucas has undoubtably been shackled, he’s a box to box midfielder not a holding player. The caution which we play with frustrates fans, (didn’t hear Chelsea fans moan when they won the league under the special one playing cautiously). And yes the lack of strength in depth, is poor but when you spend peanuts you get monkeys and Rafa hasn’t ever had the money other big clubs have, look at his net spend. But do you become a bad manager in a year?

  19. Alex Calver
    April 11th, 2010 @ 11:48 PM

Prick who doesn’t want to admit he’s a biased opposition fan. Worthless excuse for amateur journalism ! No a move to Barca wouldn’t be a step backwards they are a great club but so are Liverpool, Real Madrid,Juve,Inter,AC and Man U and plenty of players have stayed at all of those clubs through thick and thin. Not evryone is as fickle as you obviously must be.

  20. FT9
    April 11th, 2010 @ 11:48 PM

we will see just how big a club Barca and Real are when the Spanish gov get there way and stop bailing the said clubs out of depth. Tell the truth your a dirty manc aren’t ya?

  21. Cathal Breathnach
    April 11th, 2010 @ 11:49 PM

Andy, first of all, you are the first one to make a reasonable argument.

You say that Matt Le Tisser remains a legend for staying at Southampton but let’s be honest, Gerrard and Torres have already earned legendary status at Anfield. Even if they left, they would still be considered legends at the club.

All I’m saying is, if they want to achieve things in their career, which they obviously do, they should leave.

  22. Cathal Breathnach
    April 11th, 2010 @ 11:50 PM

Barca are not a bigger club than lfc, Barca 25L 3CL 3EL cups, Liverpool 18L 5CL 3EL. Barca can only dream for a fan base as world wide as lfc. The only thing Barca have is a better climate and a bigger stadium. What make you think they are a bigger club ?

  24. Cathal Breathnach
    April 12th, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

“What make you think they are a bigger club ?”

I never said they were a bigger club, all I said was that a move to Barcelona would not be a step backwards in anyone’s career.

Yeh, you’ve proved that Liverpool have won more European Cups but I am talking about the present and the fact of the matter is that, Barcelona are a far better side than Liverpool and therefore a move to the Camp Nou would not be a step backwards.

  25. Andy
    April 12th, 2010 @ 12:32 AM

Cathal, by your reasoning, Xavi should have left Barcelona years ago, he won nothing for his first six years at Barca. Rooney gets abuse from Evertonians because he asked for a transfer and engineered a move to Man U, same with Ince and many others. If you believe Torres and Gerrard can’t achieve success at Anfield, then I strongly disagree with you, if Liverpool aren’t challenging for 3 years they have every right to walk away and will be recognised for their achievements. However I believe Liverpool will challenge next year, it seems Barclays will be running the club, they’ll invest to move forward, after all if Liverpool fall then £500 million seems awfully expensive for the club. Lastly despite the largely anti LFC media trying their hardest, there seems no sign either Torres or Gerrard want to move, this is in contrast to Fabregas at Arsenal who talks about playing for Barca openly so why not comment on that?

This is absurd and beyond football.

The article is your opinion and you are entitled to it, i disagree, because i am a liverpool fan, however i wont stand here and call insults and somebody who clearly ISNT a liverpool fan.

Liverpool, next season, may have new owners, new investment, i, for one, am hoping benitez goes , along with the yanks, and bring in some needed money, new owners and a certain portugese bloke at the helm.

Your responses though are beyond football. You clearly just wanted an argument and by trolling you appear to have got that, slander a club with a HUGE (None one can deny this) fanbase and hope some fans take the bait.

That is childish to the extreme and makes you appear like a that child in school that always has to be right.

Barcelona would be a step forward. Gerrard wouldn’t get into Barcelona’s team on this seasons form mind.

I could understand if Gerrard left because he’s been here all his career, but Torres shouldn’t and won’t leave in the summer unless he’s pushed. It’s sad that people are encouraging players to jump ship because of one terrible season.

As much as people want to sign Liverpool’s death warrant, there’s no reason why we can’t be back challenging up at the top next season. We’ve struggled this season – it was always going to be difficult to match last season, and it was inevitable we’d fall after we didn’t replace the heartbeat of the team in Alonso. 2010/11 will be a fresh start, with Aquilani playing regularly from the beginning and hopefully a left back and a forward signed. Do that and maybe replace Riera who’ll be heading out the door and we can, i assure you, be a threat again in the league.

What did gabriel batistuta win in his career? He is regarded as the top 50greatest playerr according to fifa rankings.. Gerrard achieved uefa, champions league, fa cup medals, and torres has achieved european cup glory with spain thanks to LFC u really think he could of featured that much playing for atletico. I personally agree with half of this. Gerrard should never leave Liverpool because the guy will always, always be a legend for the Reds. He’s one of the best ever for the club, it would be like Giggsy leaving United. As for Torres, well he has been successful in his (relatively) short time here, but should definitely be up there challenging for the Champions League. Heard David Villa was going to Barça, it wouldn’t even be fair if Torres joined him. Its tough for a player like Torres to have to play against his true side, Atletico Madrid, so often though, and he might not want to go back to Spain because of that.

This has been a bad season for Liverpool, due to so many injuries. I know for a fact that if we didnt have such an injury hit season we would be in contention for the title – not 4th place, and as for Torres and Gerrard, they have both signed long term contracts and Torres himself has come out saying that next season he and the Liverpool team will be fighting for the title and Gerrard is going see his career out at Liverpool. This article expresses your view and i’ve just expressed mine.

Liverpool are an easy target, but people forget Rafa carried the team to 78, 82 and 86 points while playing catch up with Utd and Chelski. 3 out the last 5 seasons he finished higher than Wenger. Problem was, where was the money to push on from last season? Is that all Rafa’s fault?

Jesus lads isnt Cathal entitled to an opinion without such abuse?

As an non-biased Arsenal fan I think that both Torres and Gerrard will consider their options during the summer and wouldnt be surprised to see them both move on.
Liverpool are not going to win the league next year and I cant really see them winning it in the next 3-5 years without serious spending. Is that spending going to come with the current owners or new ones? I dont think so.

Based on that why would either of them stay?
Dont say loyality – Gerrard has stuck with the team long since others would have left so he owes Liverpool nothing.
As for Torres – he is a young fella from Spain. Taking the whole special atmosphere of Anfield and history (note now its history and not future) aside do you honestly think Liverpool as a club and as a city can compete with Barca or Madrid?

Only a few months ago, Liverpool were challenging for the Premier League title. A bit of luck with the disllowed goal against Stoke City – when the referee disallowed Gerrad’s perfectly good goal – and proper defending against Arsenal in the 4-4 thriller, could have swung the title Liverpool’s way. The team is going through a difficult period and the knives are out; with last years achievements now a distant memory. Encouraging players to be disloyal when they have hardly contributed much this season; Torres – constant injuries and Gerrard – injuries and poor form, is ridiculous. Any team in this world would have similar problems if countered with the same conondrum. “The former Atletico Madrid striker is too good to be playing for Liverpool in my opinion and the sooner he leaves the club, the better.” This is the same player whose career was going no where at Athletico Madrid, and has now been given proper exposure by Liverpool. Just goes to show how fickle football fans are. Has this opinion been made by a Man. United fan?

  55. Banger1
    May 7th, 2010 @ 8:38 AM

Real world class players should see Liverpool’s problems as a challenge, and do their best to overcome the problem with regular top class performances.

  56. Mullin
    May 10th, 2010 @ 10:17 AM

I do think it is very important which team you support, as you have openly said that you do not like Liverpool, which means that your ‘opinion’ will be biased and totally useless in any form of constructive debate. It is very clear that they both want success with Liverpool, and it very much depends on the club situation at the start of next season, do not forget that Liverpool won the Champions League in 05 and had they not drawn those extra games would have won the domestic title last year. This has been a bad season for Liverpool no doubt, but to write an article knowing that you ‘do not like liverpool’ and trying to consider it in any way constructive or pertinent is pure folly. Learn to see the game without bias, then raise a debate.

You are what is known as the ‘Sky Sports Generation.’ You know little about the history of football, you know little about the game itself. You are one of those people who just think that all players should be mercenaries who grab the first chance of success, I’m guessing you think Gerrard and Torres should join Chel$ea or Man $iteh? Because they have lots of money and look like winning things? Both are plastic clubs with no dignity and no soul. Liverpool Football Club is far bigger than these jokes of clubs.

Gerrard in his early days was playing for Liverpool in the Uefa Cup, and has in fact won everything except the league. Why would he jump at the first sign of no Champions League football?

Torres was a huge gamble who no-one wanted to take an expensive chance on, except for Liverpool. Who turned him into a world superstar, he has since played in a Champions League Semi-Final, and almost won the League. Things that never would have happened at Atletico.

It’s been a season from hell for Liverpool, but that is no reason for half-wits and idiots like you calling on these players to jump ship at the first chance.

Fuck off you cunt and don’t write about what you don’t know about, learn about the history of football and learn to understand the game.

I feel that you article has valid argument. The players are reaching their prime and if LFC cash in now who can blame them but that is if only the yanks let the money they get from the sales to be used to buy new players and not to cover the mounting finance problems. I feel that if they cash and bring in new stars then why not its just good business. I wouldnt want them to leave LFC they are an awesome pair but then again if we lose to stars and gain a transfer budget of 90mill from their combined sale 50mill (torres) + 30mil (gerrard) and will be able to buy new players that add width and flare to our game then why not. I think this discussion would be better suited a little later down the line, when we have a chance to see where Liverpool goes from here. Obviously injuries and a few unfortunate moments kept the Reds from reaching glory this season but I for one think it’s too early to abandon ship. Liverpool has issues to resolve, no doubt about that, but to say it’s time for Gerrard and Torres to bail on such a heavily decorated club and their highly celebrated careers there is quite premature.

Well, i agree thou… But gerrard and torres should stay for one season, maybe the new manager can worth it, whoknows. If liv going down with this new manager then, they should leave. Most of liv fans in my country support liv b’cos of both of them. Im not sure if they will support liv anymore without nino n stivie. LOL.

I’m a totally exasperated Liverpool fan. Nonetheless, I do think there are some extremely childish/immature people in this thread. Cathal may have a point.

I’ve supported Liverpool since I was a small child (40 years + support) but sensible enough enough to realise that we’re not going to be challenging for anything especially with Roy Hodgson allegedly in charge (according to the Liverpool Echo). If this is actually true, this will prove a disastrous appointment. There were obviously many issues in the dressing room/behind the scenes last season and this supposed appointment will do very little to steady a shaky ship.

I’m absolutely horrified that Hodgson is now potentially the best man for Liverpool especially considering the quality we’ve had in the past. Where’s the ambition? A failed manager who was sacked from Blackburn. I suspect that someone from the inside is trying to flush Liverpool down the toilet and they’re succeeding.

Therefore, it seems reasonable for Torres and Stevie G to leave asap. Stevie G has carried the Liverpool team for years and deserves to play for a world class outfit in the best competitions (Liverpool aren’t that until they buy some new players). As it pains me to say, he’s done more than enough for Liverpool over the years. I wouldn’t begrudge a move by him at all.

We can all talk about history but it doesn’t matter now. With the current perilous financial situation, why should they stay? So they can play in a sh*tty cup that no one cares about that we couldn’t even win last season? Unbelievable.

A top ten finish may be realistic this season – I doubt Hodgson will last till christmas.

Gerrard is a Liverpool icon and will never leave. Anyways he’s 30 and this will hurt his legend. Torres on the other hand must be traded so that we can surround gerrard with a good team to win all under his leadership. Think something like the Miami Heat who will win the champion ship this year by the way.

I am a hardcore liverpool fan… I have been since i was 8… It is so hard to say but it may come to an end. For 8 years now I have rooted and supported. But Now I cannot stand watching the football that is played out there. There have been sputters of luck, against chelsea and bolton… but it is inconsistent and both Torres and Gerrard are unhappy. There are kids like Ngog who take stupid shots that are from outside the box rolling on the ground with no pace right at the goalie. Pass, make a play and work from there… that is the Liverpool I have known and loved. This seems to be fading slowly, because as some games it still happens. I am sure that Liverpool can be easily repaired and there may be a comeback, but in the players eyes they see people like Ngog, people like Lucas… They see Roy Hodgson. This is what makes the difference. Ngog, far too ambitious and impatient. Lucas, inconsistent and again ambitious. And finally Hodgson, a manager that has always found himself bathing in players that are valuable and skilled compared to others in the league, and is now left without the knowledge to know how to work with Liverpool. I see the light of a Liverpool recovery, but i also see a darkness of the relegation and fading of Liverpool. Whatever happens, I will never forget the Reds.
