Manchester United need to sell Berbatov and buy Villa

Posted by on April 11, 2010 | 28 Comments

It was another shite game for Dimitar Berbatov in a Manchester United shirt as Sir Alex Ferguson’s men could only manage to draw with Blackburn at Ewood Park this afternoon.

Even the most ardent United fan will now admit that Chelsea have one hand on the Premier League title. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are a point ahead with a game in hand and with games running out, it is definitely Chelsea’s to lose.

The absence of Wayne Rooney up front this afternoon undoubtedly cost United. Berbatov was up to his old tricks. Giving out to other team-mates for his own failings, tamely shooting the ball at Paul Robinson and looking as lazy as ever.

There has been much talk in recent days and weeks that Ferguson will make a move for Valencia striker David Villa when the summer transfer window opens and I am sure the large majority of United fans would love to see the Spaniard arrive at Old Trafford.

Villa, 28, would cost United at least £35 million and if you believe what you read in the papers, the Premier League Champions don’t have that kind of money to spend. If they were to sell Berbatov, which I feel Ferguson would love to do, I reckon they would be lucky to get £12 million for him. It’s amazing to think that United coughed up over £30 million to sign Berbatov back in 2008 from Tottenham.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this one. Comments below please.

and what do you think youll get for berty he cost 31 million.who esle would be silly enough to pay anywhere near that amount for him.as for villa what makes you think you can afford him? you hundreds of millions in debt and his wages would be crazy.how about bringing in youth players and running club with more common sense than throwing good money after bad.

Yeah.. because today both or forwards had VERY much support.. what would villa have done today? just waited together with kiko for the ball? whole team was crap today, no need to single out berbatov more than necessary

Please please please get rid of Berbaflop… I can’t stand to watch his effortless performances any more!!! We just don’t have any goal threat without Rooney, we need another prolific goal scorer!!!!!

I fully agree with most of your article. I agree that its Chelsea’s to lose and I agree on everything you have stated about Berbatov. I rate Villa very highly but 35 million for a 28/29 year old is ridiculous and I seriously doubt it will happe, the price needs to drop 10-15 million at the very least.

well my gran mother would scored that . face it he is shite. i rember i stayed up till half one in the moring on transfer deadline day. and he has being shite evere sence. that was the only he was man united player he looked go suait. didnt even kick ball. time for fergie to go. were not playing football anymore, it is boring to watch. you could eee it happing last seasson. when we were winnging one nils15 in a row clean sheetes. even the season before that we didnt play are best. i hate to say but i don t think ferfie goog manger look trough all the years he had brian kid and ouiraos not he has now one mick pheal only there to coach that it. fergie has to all the work. which he didnt have to before

ya, it true that we cant depend on berbatov anymore, we need another forward but in my opinion i think Villa is too much expensive and quite old already. Beside that, the style he play too similar to Rooney. I prefer a forward which can give support to Rooney when playing in 433 formation and can lead United attack when Rooney absent. So i think Aguero, tevez, Suarez.

Sir Alex has the money but he’s buying 5-10 players worth 10mill with a hope to make them into a new Ronaldo…good choice of buying but not a good choice of players.. If he would have bought aguero or pato maybe berba wouldn’t look so lazy.. Both are attractive talents..
I feel Valencia is good So is nani.. For back up we have giggs for a season then there is park.. Orbetan so
wings are secured.. However it’s the midfield that’s the problem.. Carricks past his best Fletcher is hardworking but does not like to dominate we need a new scholes.. Maybe gourcuff… Or silva if v play 4-5-1 which I do nt prefer…then
there is the goal keeper problem after van der Saar for which I think the best choice is akineev.. He’s playing international and is a club captain..
So according to me here is hw it should be now:
    OUT:
    Ronaldo:80 mill
    berbatov:12 mill
    carrick:10mill
    tosic:6 mill
    foster:7mill
    total:115mill

    IN:
    smalling:12 mill
    hernandez:10mill
    Valencia:18mill
    orbetan:2mill
    gourcuff/silva:20mill
    pato/aguero:40mill
    akineev:15mill
    TOTAL:117
    +epl title +happy fans+ more profits

    I couldn’t agree you more
even villa’s great value but there are two major concerns of bringing him to the OT
1- he is not that young to spend such money on him
2- on fergie himself, seeing his desperate to bring benzema last two years + getting the lousy M.F Berbatov, that would identify the sir’s thought of the united striker, they are in both style, dribbling abilities with no fighting spirits like what we have in rooney + they both not scorer when it comes to crucial time like what happened against bayern munich

so I’d think better to bring dzeko, or maybe the sir would have another opinion of using the youth, mached, diouf and the new mexican kid, that would be very bad for us

Berbatov wasn’t the only problem today. Not one person showed up. Misplaced passes, over complicating things and John O’Shea. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what O’Shea has done for us in the past but the man has been injured for months and in a run of games where we need to be at our best we cannot afford to be resting our best. The blame should fall on one person’s shoulder – Fergie. We simply don’t have the depth to afford him the ability to shuffle and then with his penchant to dole out contracts to our ancient stars more and more of his ‘tactical’ decisions result in frustration to the viewing fan. We’ve only had a few matches where I’ve thought we’ve looked dangerous – today’s match was more of the norm. Time for a cull Fergie, let’s start with the over 30s (except VDS), follow that with the Geordie midfielder and finish it off with all of the youngsters who simply aren’t good enough. Bring in a holding midfielder, a creative midfielder and a fox in the box.

Totally agree with you, this guy is totally Berbastrous, pity Macheda he was well position and look like goal opportunity situation, sadly no support came from others because all were concentrating on berbatrous…don’t understand why he keep falling to the ground cheaply and blaming others including team mate…he was well protected when Rooney around but today proves otherwise he totally lost of direction and cant even take chances being feed to him, today numerous chances came by but fail to deliver the same goes in chelsea game…he must go his fancy football control already stale and can be easily read by opponent.bye bye berba i hope

we should make a 4-4-2 attack, with rio, evans, vidic, neville, evra, rafael at the back, have fletchy, carrick in mid, with the two wingers, nani and SILVA, back up with valencia missing an open goal i could have scored, and have rooney and villa up front, that sounds alot but sell the players or put them on loan so it would be easier for us to bring in those 2 players, with that attack and defence, we will win anything, but we need to get some sort of money, glazers cant provide, get some saudi guy to bring the club some money! berbatov in my opinion is rubbish, worst signing, but you have to look at the statistics, who would be better, berbatov or the highest goal scorer in the euro tournament? common sense surly

I thinktime is up for berbatov, but we have also other problems because we need to have good midfielders with eye goal who are capable to score goals because we are depending only on strikers.Hamsick or silva could do the job well.I also noticed that Nani should give better crosses because Valenencia is a better crosser of the ball.
Regarding the striker I think aguero is a very good striker that can replace rooney when needed.

this is all wannabeness!!!!!!didn’t u see the through ball berbatov gave valencia where he missed form point-blank range.Agree wid u people that berba was not that great but can’t use him as a lone striker!!he is an assisting player behind striker.undergoing really bad days!!!he has world class control great shooting skills,he will come back strong.IT’S WASTE SELLING HIM.why don’t u people see our poor mid-field,barring scholes everyone was pretty poor……untill u provide a decent delivery up-front u don’t expect strikers to score and a penalty decision on berba was turned down, shit happens.don’t expect united to win every time they play, the golden era was over.now it’s time to look up to our youth academy.Berba is class-act….he will prove it one day

berbatov should be sold…..but come on….villa?! 28-29 year old??…for 35 million? come one….!! i would understand that amount of money buying a 21 year old! no disrespect to villa…but hes is aging. ANd why not give that mexican kid a chance?! if he messes up….bench him..!..you never know…undiscovered talent is out there!!

Sell Berbatov and buy Pato or Aguero if possible. For Villa, 30 million is too much because of his age. Also buy David Silva as Man United needs a specialist midfielder.

  20. BERBO IS THE BEST
    April 12th, 2010 @ 12:51 AM

KEEP BERBO HE IS THE BEST AND HE TRYS HIS BEST. I DONT CARE IF HE DID NOT ScoRE GOALS lately. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT JUDGE SOMEONE IF HE SCORES OR NOT. WHENEVER HE SCORES EVERYONE ARE HAPPY IF NOT EVERYONE ARE ANGRAY THAT GAY. BUY VILLA AND KEEP BERBO

MU shld buy the following players :
    Marek Hamsik
    David Silva
    Manuel Neuer
    Douglas Costa
    Eden Dzeko/Karim Benzema
    and sell :
    Foster/Kuszcak
    Carrick
    Anderson
    Berbatov
This will add a better balance to the team.
Lastly we shld rid the team of the Glazers who have saddled the club with debts. Hope the Red Knights will be able to buy out the yankees and put the Red Devils back in the black.

    April 12th, 2010 @ 4:40 PM

Too many average performers in the team… no one is close to the ONLY rooney. Observe all teams… need to have atleast three high performers… no matter manutd has to buy one 28 odd or so or not. It may very well decide their next five years.

I believe Barbatov is having a crap start but soon he will be playing the game again and creating impossible assists as usual. I don’t think selling him specifically will benifit Man U at the moment. In fact selling and buying at all won’t be benefiting any teams. Money problems are all around not just with Man U.
