Man United beat Man City fair and square, but why wasn’t Wayne Rooney booked?
Posted by Cathal Breathnach on April 17, 2010 | 21 Comments
In the end, Manchester United ran out 1-0 winners over Manchester City at the City of Manchester stadium this afternoon.
The win for Alex Ferguson’s men puts them right back in the title race and leaves Roberto Mancini’s side in serious danger of missing out on that all important 4th place.
The decision by the FA to make Martin Atkinson the ref for today’s game was a strange one in my book considering his performance in the previous Manchester derby earlier this season where he added 4 minutes on and decided to play 7 minutes in the end.
Atkinson’s decision not to book United and England striker Wayne Rooney for his cynical foul on City midfielder Nigel de Jong really annoyed me. Rooney was nowhere near the ball when he decided to bring down de Jong and instead of showing Rooney a yellow card, which even the most ardent United fan wouldn’t have argued with, Atkinson decided to just award a free.
As I said before, I have no complaints about the result because it has to be said that over the course of the 90+3 minutes, United probably deserved the win but I just don’t understand why Rooney wasn’t booked.

Interesting note: same referee as the first match gave 3 minutes extra time after Bellamy scored the equalizer in injury time. That result was, because apparently the celebrations took so long (proven to be false aftwards). This time Utd scored the late winner in injury time and ‘lo and behold, the referee blows his whistle immediately this time around. Good job on being impartial, Atkinson. Should be fired on the spot.

Don’t find any small reasons to be pissed at the ref just because u lost..what difference would that have made??
Decisions like drogbas offside or terry and drogbas handball against Bolton r things u could argue but this?? Cmon man…frg8 it it wouldn make a diff and manc
have a gr8 chance of qualifying for the champions league

Run-of-the-mill Derby refereeing. Rooney should have been booked for that tackle and for playacting when he got Kompany a yellow card. Neville should have got a card for hacking down Johnson but it was still no excuse for giving up the game after 91 minutes or Mancini’s ridiculous substitutions.

I’m shocked that nobody actually knows what Rooney was doing. DeJong at done it to him earlier in the game when rooney kicked out at him and didn’t connect, De Jong fell like he was hit with a bullet and rolled around the ground. Rooney was mocking him and rightly so. As to why wasn’t he booked well for the same reason that Barry wasn’t for diving in the area. the ref was soft but he gave City almost everything in the game. Utd were the better team and deserved to win…live with it.

You city fans are unbelievable, you need to go watch the game again. United got nothing off the referee today, crazy talk from ye lot. Go watch the match again and look at all the fouls you got away with, fucking crazy!!!!

My god, some people are really stupit. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about….I’m going to explain it to you.
When city scored in OT there was 4 mins left. (ok) so it took city a min to get back to the half way line. the ref is entitled to add that 1 min on. Today, there was 14 secs left when scholes scored..(I know you’re probably lost by now) but the ref did add on the 14 sec after the kisk off….surely you understand that…It’s not rocket sience.

I loved you called me out for being stupid, yet you failed to spell stupid wrong and spelled it “stupit”. Good work, bro.
Now, onto the pressing matter. In case you’d forgotten, Owen scored the goal in the 97th minute. That is a whopping 3 minutes extra EXTRA time, despite the 1 minute celebrations. I know mathematics is a tough subject. I know YOU are lost by now.
So, to make the calculations:
City scored equalizer in injury time, which was 4 minutes. Fergie was complaining the injury time was too much. One minute of celebrations, which was about 50 seconds (give, or take) before the match resumed. So, 5 minutes injury time then. However, when Own scored, the clock read: 96:xx. In other words, nearly three minutes were added.
Now, Scholes scored the goal 17 seconds before time. The celebrations lasted for roughly a minute, however, as soon as the game continues, the whistle is blown. You still don’t see it? You might want to take your Utd goggles off then.
It is commonly acknowledged that Utd gets away with a lot. Fergie’s comments about “typical Germans” is one of those cases. Whether you like it, or not, it is the truth.
I am not a City fan and I am not saying City played great. I am looking at this from a neutral perspective and I see clear signs of Utd receiving a convenient whistle from the ref.
As for Rooney, should’ve been booked for unsportsmanlike. He hacked at de Jong’s ankle (yes Martin, Rooney did hit him when he tackled him from behind). De Jong might be rough, but his tackles were well timed today. Bridge didn’t make a handball. Barry could have easily gotten a yellow card, he did got hit on the shin, but the fall looked a bit too simple.

nothing to do with ref, i am a city fan but today we were not good enough and mancini’s substitutions baffled me, break the bank to get moriniho for next season and let him work his magic
April 18th, 2010 @ 5:33 AM
I believe the referee was transparent enough, i guess why he didn’t give rooney was because of the hard tackle on fletcher by two city players.

Are you saying I have no idea what I am talking about?
I never mentioned anything to do with the fact the ref blew the whistle after Scholes’ goal. Read the article again.

We lost the first half. Lost a fair bit of the second, but should have scored on the break late on.
United fair play to them played till the end !!
The ref was pretty lenient all round in the first half. I doubt very much Rooney would have got 2 yellows but should have got one, so what now. If he had he would have been out next week and next week we want United at full strength. Hopefully the Teams called Manchester will both win next week.

What irritates me is the fact that Match of the Day fail to highlight neither Rooney’s kick on De Jong nor his blatant play-acting to get Kompany booked. Both were disgraceful incidents and usually big talking points, especially with it being the main game on the programme. Of course though, they are conveniently missed out with him being England’s golden boy, the majority of the country wouldn’t even be aware they occurred.

My reply was not aimed at you, Cathal. I aimed my response to the smuck reply I received from Martin, calling me “stupit” in the process.
As a matter of fact, the bit you quoted was what Martin said, not me. I just used his quote a bit clumsy =p.
As for Neal, I merely said the things about the ref, because they stood out to me. City was playing terrible, but considering the ref added nearly 3 minutes time in the last derby when a similar situation scored and didn’t do anything this time was very “convenient”.
