Manchester City ready to sell Craig Bellamy and move a step closer to signing £30 million striker

Posted by on May 27, 2010 | 18 Comments

Craig Bellamy’s time as a Manchester City player appear to be coming to a close with several papers claiming today that the Welsh striker will be on his way to Tottenham when the transfer window opens later this summer.

Bellamy, 30, was, without doubt, one of City’s top performers last season. However, ever since the arrival of Roberto Mancini at Eastlands, things haven’t really worked out for the former Newcastle and Liverpool striker.

There were reports of a training ground bust-up between Bellamy and Mancini earlier this year and many claim that the pair no longer see eye-to-eye with one another.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is understood to be very keen to bring Bellamy to White Hart Lane and a there is talk of a possible £12 million deal going through in the coming weeks.

It has been reported this evening that Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko is close to joining Manchester City which would seem to indicate that Bellamy is in fact on his way out of the club.

Dzeko, 24, has been linked with dozens of Europe’s elite in recent weeks with Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan and several others believed to be interested. The Bosnian international is considered by many as one of the brightest prospects in world football and City are reportedly ready to cough up £30 million to secure his services.

I have only seen bits and bobs of Dzeko in recent months but even I can see that he clearly has a lot of ability. During his time in Germany with Wolfsburg, Dzeko has scored an impressive 74 goals in 120 appearances. Personally, I would love to see Dzeko play in the Premier League next season and I’m sure the majority of City fans will be happy to see a player of his quality possibly arriving.

Man City will need to pay Dzeko £300,000 a week as compensation for playing in the Europa League – if this lad has got any ambition at all he’ll stay well clear.

I am absolutely devastated to hear you might be getting Dzeko.

As a preface, I should point out that I’m a Spurs fan, and that I say this entirely out of bitterness and disappointment, but…

I think it’s completely unfair that the likes of yourselves and Chelsea hold such a financial advantage over everyone else. You could also say the same for Real, who seemingly have separate backing altogether.

It makes a total nonsense of good management, and I mean good management at every level – youth team, coaching, senior management and the Chairman too.

I hate the fact that you can bypass this simply by paying extra for players – it makes a mockery of the whole thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging, and I’m sure that had Spurs been acquired by some middle-eastern billionaire, I wouldn’t be losing sleep over whether it was fair or not, but it makes being a fan pretty trying.

In my opinion, all Spurs’ hard work this year will be for very little, as we stand very little chance of beating you to the top 4 again next year, and once you get into the top 4 I can’t see you getting pushed out until your owners change and you have to balance your books.

It’s great that the traditional top 4 have been shaken, but in reality, all I think will happen is that you’ll replace Liverpool long term, and we’ll go back to also-rans.

No offense, I have nothing against you as a group of supporters, but I dearly hope the financial tests UEFA were discussing come into place quickly and that as such you aren’t allowed to qualify for Europe

Silly Tom the supporter of the delusional ones… you’ll be joining us in the Europa league relatively soon. Mark my words.

Alternatively Tom, he may think City have a great chance of being in the top 4 next season and that he is young enough to be able to show a little patience. If everyone in football really did have this attitude that you and lots of other idiots in football have that players should only sign for a club who are currently in the CL then only 4 clubs would be able to attract players each season. Spurs would only have been able to sign quality players now but never before. If we make the top 4 next season and you don’t, would you be spouting the same cack or would you hope that players would look at the bigger picture? Fool!

    m19guvnor,

Yeah, I’d say City have a great chance of ‘being the future’, but then why say it with any pride?

It’s like playing champ manager and fixing it so you have infinite cash. You’ll win, but there’s no skill involved.

    Dear Ron Burgundy,

You try and dress up your bitterness by being sincere but it doesn’t wash.

For years Spurs have been trying to muscle their way in with big transfers for diabolical players.

At the time we were unable to buy anyone decent.

    You’re just a complete hypocrite

So don’t expect us to feel sorry for you.

There is no way Dzeko would have gone anywhere near the lane anyway.

    Best regards

    Beany

    M Beany,

I’ve said that I was bitter. But the point is, that you’ve completely missed, whether we spent or not, we didn’t spend beyond our means.

Is it wrong to try and muscle in to the top 4? Of course it’s not, but we did it on the same playing field, and with the same constraints as everyone else.

It took decades to build our franchise, and recent good management has put us in a good position. But it means nothing if someone else can essentially work in a different way to everyone else.

Why on earth wouldn’t I be bitter? I guess we have the comfort of the fact that we’ll have the chance of playing CL football next year.

In fairness I haven’t tried to be insulting, and have been open about why I’m unhappy about the whole matter.

Don’t take it personally, but I think it speaks volumes that most of the footballing community wanted us to beat you to 4th last year

    Ron Burgundy,

Spuds have been pumping money into the transfer market for a few seasons now so to make out like it grew organically or whatever is nonsense.

And to say we (city) aren’t spending within our means is just mental, the shiekh is worth £500 billion, so what are you on about? He can afford to lose money so therefore its within our means, if however we were borrowing it, that would be another matter.

you also mention that everyone was routing for you against us in the race for 4th, yet its funny how ‘everyone’ was happy to see us get the investment when it was first announced, mainly due to the contrast in fortunes with united over the years, but now we have actually spent some of it and are getting our act together this no longer applies.

    Fickle.

I would agree that you haven’t tried to be insulting and your overall points of organic growth versus MCFC’s growth have some limited validity. However, until very recently Spurs were also engaging similar overall investment albeit over a longer period.I would like to ask though, if this was in any other sector, would you have an issue with an owner heavily investing in lets say their factory’s infrastructure, paying the highest wages in that field, actively engaging with the community including local charities and not saddling the company with debt of this investment? No the owners would be lauded as leading lights in that sector.
