World Cup Day 6 – Spain suffer shock defeat as Forlan bags a brace to all but knock the hosts out

Day 6 of the World Cup provided a huge shock as the pre-tournament favourites Spain suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in Durban.

A single goal from Gelson Fernandes, the former Manchester City midfielder who looks a bit like Robinho, was enough for Switzerland to grab a massive three points in Group H. It’s fair to say that the Spanish looked very suspect at the back and seemed to lack ideas in the final third. Vincente Del Bosque’s men will be going home early if they don’t get their act together soon, starting with the game against Honduras on Monday.

Meanwhile, in the other game in Group H, Chile edged out Honduras in a game they may have won by more than the 1-0 scoreline they eventually did. Jean Beausejour scored the only goal of the game just after the half hour mark in a game in which Chile impressed. I personally enjoyed Chile’s performance today and I for one hope they go along way in this World Cup, not just because I have a few quid on them reaching the quarters.

Finally, South Africa, or the Baffana Baffana (which means ‘The Boys’ in Zulu) are on the brink of exiting the tournament after they were hammered 3-0 by Uruguay. Diego Forlan scored twice as Uruguay comfortably saw off the challenge of the hosts, who were reduced to ten men with 15 minutes to go when the keeper, Itumeleng Khune, was shown a straight red for bringing down Luis Suarez in the South Africa box. Alvaro Pereira completed the scoring with seconds to go leaving Uruguay in a very strong position in Group A.

Here are 3 conclusions we can draw from today:

  1. Diego Forlan must be worth a bet at 12/1 to be the top goalscorer at the World Cup.
  2. Spain look tired.
  3. And finally, Chile may be the ones to watch this summer.
