World Cup Day 14 – The Champions are going home early

Haven’t got much time on my hands right now giving the fact it was my birthday on Thursday. So here is just a quick look at what happened in today’s 4 games.
Italy were knocked out of the tournament as they were beaten 3-2 by Slovakia. Elsewhere in Group F, Paraguay progressed to the last 16 with a 0-0 draw with New Zealand.
Holland managed to maintain their 100% record in this World Cup with a 2-1 win over Cameroon. In the other game in Group E, Japan ran out 3-1 winners over Denmark which was enough to see the Asian side reach the knock-out stages of the tournament.
Apart from the Slovakia v Italy game, day 14 of the World Cup was quite boring. Here are 3 conclusions we can draw from today’s action:
- Slovakia will not reach the quarter finals of this World Cup.
- Even without some of their key men, Holland look quite impressive.
- And finally, the Italians are muck.

They have been champions 4 years ago, but it was a totally different team from then, but still an ageing kind of team. The younger players didn’t look good enough and the theatricals remained for Italy. They need to change their way of playing. New Zealand should be delighted with their world cup this year. Even though they are out, they are unbeaten in a group which involved 2 tough sides and as mentioned, the world champions, who they finished above of.
