Roy Hodgson looks to make this English midfielder his first signing as Liverpool manager

Ever since it was announced that Roy Hodgson had been appointed the new Liverpool manager, a whole host of names have been linked with summer moves to Anfield.
One name which I am sure will excite many Liverpool fans is Aston Villa’s Ashley Young. The Mail on Sunday has claimed that Hodgson will look to make Young his first signing as the new Liverpool boss and I for one believe he would be an incredible signing for the Merseyside club.
Young, 24, has become one of the most feared wingers in the Premier League ever since he made the switch from Watford to Aston Villa back in 2007. Villa boss Martin O’Neill will no doubt be desperate to hold onto one of his most prized assets but it is expected that given the opportunity, Young would jump at the chance to join Liverpool.
Liverpool will no doubt need to sell a player or two if they want to sign Young, given the fact there is clearly not much money to spend at the moment. We all know Yossi Benayoun joined Chelsea last week so Liverpool clearly need to add another midfield player to their ranks and I reckon they could do a lot worse than Young.
I’m keen to know what you have to say on this one. Feel free to leave your comments below.
We would really appreciate it if you could take a few seconds out of your day to ‘like’ the new Football Corner Facebook page. Cheers!

speak to some villa fans, believe me they won’t be too heart broken. We’ve already got an inconsistent young left winger who has failed to live up to early potential.

Simply don’t see it as MON won’t sell him cheap so where does the money come from? Also I have doubts about how good he actually is, why was he nowhere near England’s World Cup squad? Face it there weren’t any great left sided wingers/midfielders. Van Der Vaart is a much better bet.

Ashley young is so overrated.we have babel who could do similar things id rather go for Milner who is more versatile.our squad is not bad as we think we need another good left back and a few more english/british blood in it.wouldent mind joe cole but he isent gonna move away from london as he is a london boy.

The future’s bright. Our dynamic new manager wants to bring in an inconsistent midfielder of questionable morals. Looking forward to the clean living and super family man Tores, exchanging banter with this guy! Roy looks to be a super appointment!

Besides one or two top class signing who can provide immediate 1st team quality, Hodgson also need to look deep into LFC’s rich pool of talents in the reserves and academy i.e. Lauri D. Valle, Kristian Nemeth, Nathan Eccleston, David Amoo, Martin Kelly, Steven Darby, Pacheco etc and start giving them time on the field so when 1st teamers like Gerard, Carragher, Kuyt, Torres retires, LFC has immediate quality replacements.

turan yes young no thanks……
July 4th, 2010 @ 7:33 PM
Ithink young is an excellent choice for l`pool he`s fast good dribler has a good shot takes good freekicks well balanced player I like himIthink he`s good.Once roy starts working on him he`ll be even better.young is a perfect choice for the REDS
July 4th, 2010 @ 8:47 PM
Roy is doing the right thing for England & LFC! England were useless @ the World Cup.
July 4th, 2010 @ 9:44 PM
Young is not even as good as Ryan Babel
July 5th, 2010 @ 12:55 AM
young is not overrated
he is the best out and out winger england has to offer
milner is versatile, he is a jack of all trade, master of none tho.
we need babel and young on the wings. two pacey and filled with excellent potential. lets not forget the distanted rafa is gone. younger players who need a pat on the shoulder may benefit from woy’s approach

Right now, liverpool needs players who can fit into the first team without having to spend too much time adapting to the premier league. Thus the most logical and low-risk way is to look within the league. The last thing we want is to spend millions based on some fans’ or overseas scouts’ recommendations only to get another Lucas or Aquilani.

I think a year ago he would have excited Liverpool fans but if he had been bought and played for Pool the way he has played for Villa this season it would be looked at as a Keane EsQ wate of money.
July 5th, 2010 @ 7:19 AM
frankly speaking, i think he is not that good. 1 good season doesnt decide the quality of a player. i think there are better prospects than young. what liverpool need now is a sure shot ticket out of the mess they find themselves in. mr.hodgson needs to sign experienced heads for sure. maybe after securing champions league next season, he might go for young talent again. i just dont think now is the time…

The problem is we werent in a position to go after Adam Johnson – which in retrospect was rediculous, any top 4 team would have him now. There’s not a lot of left wingers about, Di Maria just joined Madrid for silly money after a very average world cup.
Asley Young does posess skill and pace. Riera has no pace and it’s why he’s only average in the Prem. Young with some guidance and youthfull Insua combining could work well. Some players need the right environment to show their worth – like Barnes did 25 years ago. If we’ve got money from Benny, and sell riera its not a bad move, plus we have that lad in the ressies if we need cover past babel, or Dirk has proved he can cover there too. Joe Cole on a free doesnt look the worst deal ever – but he’s not exactly a winger, and has said he wants to play in the middle.
July 5th, 2010 @ 10:16 AM
Balderdash! This guy is so good they didn’t want to take him to the world cup as he would scores several dozen goals and make the rest of the world look idiotic! Mind you getting mid-fielders would be in keeping with LFC tactics methinks. Heaven forbid that they buy a goal-scorer and start putting the ball in that funny net thing they have on football pitches!!
Now that would never do, would it???
July 5th, 2010 @ 11:22 AM
thnk we dnt av much choice as we av 2 go 4 english talent and young is prob the best english winger out there but u neva know he mte improve under mr hodgson
July 5th, 2010 @ 1:28 PM
As a die hard fan of Liverpool fc, am in real need of any possitive shuffle that might bring back the past glory of Livepool back. Ashley Young is quite a sweet taste to the fans mouth and i personally applouds it, he is an enterprising player that will bring the requiered energy to the team to surge forwards. Above all, Steve Gerrard should be the last person to be touched by the shuffles (He is what Liverpoolfc is)
July 5th, 2010 @ 3:49 PM
I think we should buy Ashley Young he would be a great signing ,he has all the qualities Ryan Babel promises to be but never delivers.Sell Babel£10m,Benayoun£6m,Riera£6m,Krygiakos£3.5m,Degen£1.5m,Itandje£1m,Ayala£3m,San Jose£2.7m,Plessis£2m,El Zhar£2m,Nemeth£3m,Martin and Aurelio released none of these players will really be missed too much and could raise between £35-40m to add to the £15m budget Roy has been given without losing any key players. Roy has said he will mainly be looking to sign British and homegrown talents and he is looking to sign Joe Cole-free,Ashley Young£18m,Gary Cahill£12m,Alex Smithies£1m,John Arne Riise£5m,Milan Jovanovic-free,Romelu Lukaka£8m and I have also heard strong rumours about Stephen Ireland£8-10m and Thierry Henry-free I think the Ireland one is more likely as he has handed in a transfer request and I think Henry is heading off to the New York Red Bulls.
July 5th, 2010 @ 4:08 PM
I think a signing like this would really prove a point to the “name” players and galvanize to squad. It may be all it takes to turn our fortunes around.
July 5th, 2010 @ 7:33 PM
one word – we’ve already got Jovanovic and on a free. Now that boy can play (and he scored a goal in the World Cup which is more than 90% of the England squad can say!! – and 100% of those that weren’t good enuff for Capello & Co.
Relax – this is paper trash talk. “Hmmm. Yossi’s gone – the new manager’s English – so who else English could the new manager go for? I know Joe Cole!! oh wait, that was last week’s story…” “Hey anyone know any English wingers that the new man at Liverpool might go for? Who? Oh yeah that Young guy – he’s perfect. Cheers mate, now I can go down the pub as soon as I’ve put this “scoop” in… This’ll spark some comments ” (sounds of hands rubbing)

Still think you’re a big club? Got news for ya scouse losers, only one way for you lot! DOWN
July 18th, 2010 @ 5:13 PM
roy must really consider bringing arda turan to lfc cause their budget is really low and turan would not cost more than $15 million which will result in selling bable for turan as far as i no ashley young would cost $25 million so lfc fans should raise their voice to get him to liverpool before teams like manu or other big teams capture him
