“Fernando Torres will stay in the Premier League but I cannot say whether that will be with Liverpool.”

Posted by on July 5, 2010 | 27 Comments

José Antonio Martín, the agent of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, has had a few very interesting things to say today.

The Spanish striker, Torres that is, has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks following Liverpool’s failure to qualify for Champions League football last season.

The likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City are all believed to be interested in signing Torres this summer but there is no doubt that new Liverpool boss, Roy Hodgson, will be doing all he can to hold onto one of his most prized assets.

Martín had this to say when asked about the possibility of Torres moving this summer: “It is very likely that Fernando Torres will stay in the Premier League but I cannot say whether that will be with Liverpool.”

“We are working on his future but right now we cannot guarantee that he will stay with the English club.” The English club is Liverpool, just in case you were confused.

Interesting stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. Personally, I would be surprised to see Torres still wearing the red of Liverpool next season. Regardless of his poor form at the World Cup, Torres is still, in my book, one of the best strikers in world football and to tell you the truth, I believe he is too good for Liverpool.

We would love to know what you have to say on this one. Comments below please.

If you wouldn’t mind, we would really appreciate it if you would take a few seconds out of your day to ‘like’ the new Football Corner Facebook page. Cheers.

I tell you what I have to say on this one:

    Bollocks.

He’s personally said (note, *personally* – not through a mouth-piece or blood sucking agent) that he won’t play for another English club and he recently told a mascot in South Africa that he would not sign for Manchester City because “..my heart is with Liverpool.”

Sure, he may get the hump and leave, if he does then he isn’t worthy of wearing the Liver Bird on his chest. If he does go I’d bet my shirt on it being to Italy or home to Spain.

As for ‘too good for Liverpool’ – You write a little blog about the game but you don’t seem to know a lot. Liverpool are the most successful club in British history. They’ve been dragged down by the two fat parasites in the boardroom but we’re kicking for the surface again now. New owners by August and back where we belong.

Plastic fans have been hawking all over the Scousers since we got sold up shit-creek but you won’t be waving your given-out-at-the-turnstyles flags when we’re in the same financial boat as some of you spoiled, rich clubs.

As for Manyoo – £750 million in debt?! No transfer funds and a senile, beligerent manager – good luck for the forseable future.

“As for ‘too good for Liverpool’ – You write a little blog about the game but you don’t seem to know a lot. Liverpool are the most successful club in British history.”

Exactly, they are the most successful club in British history but when was the last time they won the Premier League title. Oh yes, that’s right, they have never won a Premier League title. Stop talking about history and talk about now, the present.

Torres won’t stick around for much longer because he is TOO GOOD for Liverpool.

You are obviously an upset Liverpool fan but get with the times, Liverpool are not a good side anymore. Europa League football is not enough for Torres and I for one think he will leave the club in the coming weeks and rightly so.

And as for “You write a little blog about the game but you don’t seem to know a lot” statement. Send us a link to your site then, yeh? If I don’t know a lot, then it’s quite surprising that I have been asked to write pieces for several sites including the BBC World Cup site.

Write for the BBC, really? You and I both know that’s utter nonsense.

I don’t write about sport. I couldn’t do it impartially, so I don’t do it at all(something you might take note of there).

I do however write for a living (you know, when you actually get paid for it?). You can toddle over to http://www.itpro.co.uk and view any number of my pieces whenever you see fit.

    Getting back on track:

The club is in the state it’s in because of mis-management at boardroom level. Last season saw some serious, lasting injuries to key players, one of whom was Torres and he is still not over the injury now. The season before that we had our highest points tally in the Premier League and unfortunately on that occasion it wasn’t enough to win it (it’s worth noting that it would have been for many years previous).

When we signed Torres, he had numerous offers from other clubs (including Chelsea and United) for more money and seemingly more esteem. He rejected them flat and came to Anfield, and he came because of pedigree not because of nouveau rich Arabs or Russians throwing money and Rolex wrist watches at him.

He may well up and leave this Summer, as I said. If he does he won’t be the man we Scousers think he is.

I’m realistic enough to know that the club I love is in peril but shite-hawk journalists and wannabes like your goodself have been circling since mid-season, rubbing your hands. You can’t wait to see the great institution that is Liverpool hurt because you’re jealous, bitter and unpleasant.

What’s happening at Liverpool (and United) is bad for our country and terrible for our league. Instead of trying to make a name for yourself by shit-peddling, try putting that sought-after-by-the-BBC talent of yours to good use.

Oh and I just looked up your ‘Guest Blog’ over at the BBC; kudos.

Although I think the ‘being asked to write for’ comment was slightly over-egging the pudding, don’t you?

    You’re a blogger, not a writer. Don’t confuse the two. I certainly can’t.

    Real classy Cathman,

You take a massive dump all over Liverpool FC and Liverpool fans and then ask people reading this miserable excuse for a piece, to “like” your new Football corner page on Facebook.

Textbook example of someone who wouldn’t know journalistic objectivity or even good writing if it crawled up your posterior and bit you in the neck.

OT @ Mish – maybe you don’t realise this, but you come across as remarkably patronising. Anyone would think you’ve won the Nobel Prize in Literature, as opposed to writing for an IT website. The difference between a writer and a blogger can be large in some cases, and far smaller in others. There are plenty of ‘bloggers’ who make more money from their work than you do – and, last time I checked, a writer was defined as ‘one who writes, especially as an occupation’.

With that said, the ‘too good for Liverpool’ comment rankles a tad. Liverpool have had one truly appalling year – but hopefully Torres will want to help Liverpool get to where they were the season before and not leap ship. I am hopeful he has the character to do that and see his contract through…

    I can’t see Fernando with City….
He can’t make our rivals stronger than us..

Torres is like most footballers these days, a mercenary, a fantastic player but also one that seems to be injury prone and from his World Cup performances he looks off his form for some reason. Liverpool are a great club in terms of history, but the reality of the situation is the here and now, no champions league and no promise of silverware on the horizon, a big offer would test everybody’s resolve.

    ‘being asked to write for’

Well they contacted me and asked would I like to write on their World Cup Have Your Say site so technically I was asked to write for them.

Mish – “(you know, when you actually get paid for it?)”

You really are some prick. I do get paid to write this so don’t worry about me.

  14. Mish
    July 5th, 2010 @ 9:09 PM

Oleg – I was patronising on purpose. I’m sick of reading what every arsehole, armchair ‘writer’ is chucking about as truth. There’s never any reliable source and most of the knives-out stories are written by jumped up plastic Chelsea and United fans who just lap up anything that remotely constitutes ammunition for a dig at LFC.

If you read what I wrote carefully you’ll notice that I stated clearly that I wouldn’t be able to write about Football as my opinions are too strong and biased. I write about something which I can be neutral and subjective about, it may not be very interesting but the pay’s good and I can do the job *right*.

Cathal – I’m not worrying about you, chap. I assume you have a perfectly pleasant career in accounting, I’m happy for you.

If you want to turn your hand to unbiased writing rather than petty, bitter needling you might find you get a better reception (you will from this red, at least). In the meantime, while you continue to try and pass off your hatred of another club as journalism you’ll be ridiculed and you’ll come across as a class-a c**t.

As I mentioned when I replied initially, I can’t argue against the damage that’s been done to LFC but to print something about one player being too good for the most successful team in British history is a nonsense. We both know that, I suspect.

    July 6th, 2010 @ 3:16 PM

You’re half my age? You’re 15? Deary me young man, I suggest you learn some respect for your elders lest you get a slap and sent to bed without your supper!

You so obviously DO need advice, Cathal otherwise you wouldn’t be writing biased, bilious nonsense about football clubs you have no interest in.

You’re so blatantly a plastic United fan or a comrade of the Chelski revolution; why don’t you at least based your writing around a fanzine format, at least then you’ll be setting your stall out correctly. All this ‘Football Corner’ malarky actually makes people think you might be an honest-to-goodness football fan, which as we both know, is bollocks.

So, stop all your bitterness and horseshit and take some advice. Stop peddling your club based crap and adjust your sights.

Jesus Mish, you really are pathetic. I’m not 15 actually. I’m 18. I may need advice but do you think I need to take some from some scouse bloke who writes for an IT site? No thanks.

And no, I’m not a plastic United fan or or a comrade of the Chelski revoloution. You’re 30. Try do something useful with your life you sad muppet instead of reading football blogs and criticising people.

“I am half your age and I don’t really need advice from someone who writes for an IT website.”

    I’m 31, that makes you 15-16. I didn’t say it, knob-head, you did.

When I’m reading through articles that concern my football club, that have clearly been written by some bitter little hack, I’m not going to sit idly by and say nothing.

You write your dross, you choose to put it out there for the world to see – expect criticism. The way you write, expect a LOT.

You haven’t mentioned any of the constructive points I made though, about your inability to write unbiased stories. All you’ve done since I criticised your work is shout your mouth off about how good you are, about who has supposedly offered you lucrative writing jobs and call me profane names.

Frankly, as an 18 year-old aspiring writer you should be ashamed of yourself. 14 or 15 would’ve been more the mark.

“your inability to write unbiased stories”

I write a blog. A blog is about opinion. God forbid I would put some opinion in the pieces I write.

“All you’ve done since I criticised your work is shout your mouth off about how good you are”

I mentioned one thing where I was asked to write a piece on the BBC after you said “you don’t seem to know a lot.”

“I am half your age and I don’t really need advice from someone who writes for an IT website.”

And for this one, you clearly just made up that quote. Read the previous comments. Because what I said was “I’m not 15 actually. I’m 18. I may need advice but do you think I need to take some from some scouse bloke who writes for an IT site? No thanks.”

If you don’t rate my writing, why do you even bother coming back to criticise me. It really is quite pathetic for someone your age.

There you have it in a nutshell. You write drivel and you don’t even remember writing it half the time.

    Can I interject?
I don’t care about age issues….i care about the future of the Reds. I agree with Mish that there are far too many wagon-hoppers when it comes to big marketing machines like United and Chelsea (come to think of it Man City are starting to really piss me off lately too).
I honestly think that we should dump Torres, take the lump in whatever we would get for him…..50? 60? and invest in some younger deadly players. We have a great advantage in the world cup. We get to see how these guys from small clubs are ripping it up and asking for very little except to play for a world class football club like Liverpool. Yeah, it’s a world class football club! I agree with quite a lot of Mish’s comments and that its true that most EPL non-Red supporters love to take shots at the little team with no cash.
Liverpool have done well with very little support from the top. Dump those who want to leave. Torres, when he wasnt riding the pine last season, didnt play up to standard anyway.
He has played horribly this WC and I think that he is peaking early or will be soon. Either way, take the money and run. If we don’t and even if he ends up playing well, it will be with just him, Kuyt, Gerrard and the chip on his shoulder for having to be “stuck” at Liverpool. We played games with Alonso and lost him….now Torres and his agent seem to be playing games with LFC. Babel, Lucas, Ngog and the Greek taxi driver are not support on a squad that needs to win. Retrofit the whole damn team.
