Possibly the most boring World Cup ever?

Posted by on July 11, 2010 | 11 Comments

So Spain are champions but my god the 2010 World Cup was incredibly boring.

I can count the amount of decent games on one hand and that is honestly no exaggeration.

It was a World Cup where an octopus was the star of the show as Paul correctly predicted every German game and indeed in the final.

I was so disappointed at how bad the final between Spain and Holland was. It really did sum up the whole tournament.

What did you make of the 2010 World Cup as a whole? Comments below please.

    While there were some exciting teams to watch in this world cup, the winner was not one of them. Spain plays some of the most ticky tacky boring football I’ve ever seen. If this is the style of international football that is going to be the future, it’s not very bright.

    Semi-agree.

    Some good games:
    * Brazil-Netherlands
    * Germany-Argentina
    * Germany-Uruguay
    and a few more

    But France-Uruguay, Spain-Porutgal, and that borderline unwatchable final…. UUUUGGGGHHHH….

    Holland vs brazil was an awesome game – also england germany was great for around 70 minutes until the germans put it out of contention (I’m blaming the fact that they practised with the ball for a whole year before everyone else bigger traversty of justice than not having a second referee on the touchline). I think that was it wasn’t it? Someones put a link to all the goals in italia 90 – that was great tournament (also boring final though)

    I actually couldn’t agree with both of your more. Even the games that had “my” team were really boring… low scores, tactical midfield control, and a whole lot of appealing to the ref for penalties… a lot of whining-but i suppose that is nothing new.

    The most exciting thing about the final was to see how many bookings could be made.

    Spain are the possibly the poorest side ever
    to be World champions, they have won it by acoring fewer goals than any previous winners
    and helped by poor refering, it was an obvious
    corner and also a Dutch penalty should have
    been awarded prior to the winning goal.

    What a snore fest!

    3 years ago I moved to Melbourne. The have a football game here called AFL. My team is the Magpies.

    If people had the chance, I can’t believe people would watch soccer over Aussie footy. AFL is like a mix of all codes. It is really fast and players can catch the ball. Somtimes they leap 2 meters over other players. The aussies call this play a spekie There are many goals to.They have no offside rule so the players can go anywhere they like. The MCG is the best place to watch this game. I don’t think this game is played overseas but it is so much better.

    In AFL and the players don’t roll on the ground and fake fouls. But they can be badly hurt and still try to play. The tension is really very high, some games are so close, but they hardly ever draw the game. A draw in AFL is so amazing to see. I saw a draw this year so exciting. Either side could win with one mistake. Because they can score just one point or 6 points for a goal.

    Soccer needs to get rid of the offside rule

    Ah you can have that game!

    Soccer is a boring game to begin with and this world cup final has cemented it as the most boring World Cup game to ever grace live TV.

    Spain’s style of game is a snorefest, they don’t do anything but defend and counter attack, they got lucky and manage a 1 nil victory over another boring team albeit after close to extra time.

    They just need goal line technology! That would have changed the entire WC for the better. Remember the very beginning of the England Germany game when Rooney was clear on goal, yet the referee called offsides? How about the US Slovenia game where the US should have legitimately won? Or the Argentina game where Tevez wasn’t called offsides and ended up with a goal? Worse yet was the bloody final. The game has got to be reffed fairly- De Jong should have seen red, and Robben should have won a penalty. When there are such glaring referee errors at the highest level of the game on the biggest stage of the world, it’s no wonder that players get frustrated. And this only exacerbates the problems the refs have.

    I completely agree with Jimmy above. Spain are a technically gifted sissy-squad who fall down at every opportunity and then complain to the referees until the other team’s players gets booked. They don’t even really play defense- their defense is possession, which they want to retain for its own sake and hardly any other. Ultimately, such conservative play and whining to the referee about the slightest contact results in a very dull game. And it’s like both the Dutch and the Spanish watched the Champions League final again and took notes from Jose Mourinho about how to properly play ‘anti-football’.

    Too many big teams did not go through into the knockout stages, and in this sense it’s just coincidental that so many managers made such stupid decisions. In previous World Cups, France were my favorite team to watch. Maybe I should just thank Zidane, since he seemed to be the glue holding the team together. Domenech is an idiot- and with Zidane gone, the team fell apart. Samir Nasri and Karim Benzema should have definately been on the first team- Hatem Ben Arfa could have been another creative force. Hell, even Gabriel Obertan would have brought more life to the team than many of Domenech’s selections. Henry didn’t even play hardly at all either. It definitely is suspicious that French players of “Arab” descent (Samir, Karim, Hatem, etc.) seemed to be discluded.
    For Italy, Marcelo Lippi was an idiot to disclude players like Bolotelli, Cassano, and Rossi. Why did he think he could win with his extremely slow, old veterans when there were younger and more imaginative players at his disposal?
    For England, Cappello was an idiot for the disclusion of Theo Walcott and Ashley Young. Heskey should never have made the first team. Dawson should have started over Upson. Cappello’s team selection was far too based on statistics (like Heskey being a better partner for Rooney upfront or Upson having more first team experience than Dawson -on paper at least)

    After such great expectations for the beatiful game, I only have one thing to say: What an anti-climax!

    Oh, and for the record, I can totally sympathize with the referees. They aren’t omniscient robots, they’re human- and they’re capable of mistakes just like the rest of us. So I’m not really blaming them for a lot of the rubbish that happened, I’m blaming Fifa.
    Goal line technology would get them off the hook when they don’t see specifically what happened. All you’d need is a fourth official watching an HD broadcast to simply confirm or deny the accuracy of the head referee’s original call.

    I remember Euro 2008, that was one of the best tornuments of recent times-Spains brilliance, Turkey’s late winners, Netherlands fantastic start, Croatia and Russia’s likability.
