If and when Mascherano leaves, who should Liverpool sign to replace him?

Posted by on August 6, 2010 | 21 Comments

It would appear fairly certain that Javier Mascherano will leave Liverpool before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month which would then leave Roy Hodgson on the look-out for a new midfielder.

Plenty of names have already been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks and if you believe some reports, Liverpool are close to signing Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen.

Even if Poulsen does sign, I, like many others, believe Hodgson will still buy a new central midfield player in the coming weeks. I have said it before, I reckon West Ham’s Scott Parker would be an excellent addition to the Liverpool squad but with the Hammers understandably reluctant to sell one of their star players, it would take a big offer to bring the former Chelsea midfielder to Merseyside.

So if and when Mascherano does leave, who should Liverpool sign to replace him? Please leave your comments below.

You can buy yourself FA Cup tickets and Carling Cup tickets right now.

not bein funny or tryin to put you lot down because i have no problem with liverpool now that fat spanish knob head has left, but you lot are dreaming a bit.

no way in hell would roma sell de rossi, if i was you lot i would go for flamini, hes out of favour at milan and hes well suited to the PL.

i too would like parker but he’s too expensive so i would probably go for flamini, young at 26, with PL experience and will get a few goals.

I think Flamini fits the bill…Already played Premier League for a couple of years and has got what it takes to endure the long football schedule

I don’t think if Poulsen and Parker will be an ideal/right replacement for Marsherano, Liverpool will never win the title with such kind of players. I advice Roy to look for Javier Martinez, Steven Defour, Xabi Alonso and Benega. All these can provide some creativity at the midfield which had lost since the departure of Alonso.

I really dont understand when people say Lucas is crap/sell him. you need a SQUAD, not just a first 11! Centre midfield will be, attacking – 1st choice Gerrard, backup Aquilani. Defensive midfield ??? first choice, backup Lucas.

We need a QUALITY defense midfield who can pick a quality pass. I’d say yea to defour, maybe. but people saying Milner, PARKER!, Poulsen really need to start using their heads!.

    Milner – Over-rated and attacking!
Parker – If u think he’s quality then i wont say anything else, and almost 30 for £15m!!!!
Poulsen – OK… but again 30 and need really good enough.

De rossi!! amazing but we’d never afford him (take-over maybe) but we shouldn’t bank on that.

Being realistic, £25m for masch, £10m on a dm, £15m on a backup striker and what-evers rest for a LB.

Fingers crossed we get new owners before the window closes!!!!

    YANKS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be happy with Banega or Defour or Diarra but i would prefer Lucas to play ahead of Poulsen i just do not rate him.

I would go for schweinsteiger he is made for that position and way better than masherano. We need a striker and I would go for adibayor, he would welcome a move to anfield.

    Anthony Annan.
Ghanaian International. Aged 23. Strong and knows when to play the ‘right ball’ as Paisley used to say.
Plays in Norway at the moment and Chelsea and Man Utd have shown interest.
