Liverpool close in on the signing of £11 million Premier League striker

Posted by on August 29, 2010 | 12 Comments

According to reports this evening, Liverpool are closing in on the £11 million signing of West Ham striker Carlton Cole.

Roy Hodgson is desperate to add another striker to the books at Anfield before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday and it has been confirmed that Liverpool have opened talks with West Ham.

Cole, 26, is considered by many as an ideal strike partner for Fernando Torres and with the England international understood to be interested in a switch to Merseyside, the move looks inevitable.

Following the departure of Javier Mascherano to Barcelona and the subsequent arrivals of Raul Meireles and Paul Konchesky, Hodgson had this to say after today’s 1-0 victory over West Brom: “We’ve got space to add a player. We’d like another striker, we’ve said that all along and there’s no point me denying it.”

There is no doubt that on his day, Cole is one of the best strikers in the Premier League. However, at the rumoured £11 million, I’m not too sure whether this move represents value for money for Liverpool. I would be surprised if the deal didn’t go ahead before the window shuts on Tuesday.

Roy’s taking Liverpool to mediocrity with this sort of signing. He’s just not good enough for Liverpool – Roy, you’re not managing Fulham any more!

yeah i would take him as i think having better players around him will bring the best out of him, however i do believe liverpool still need to introduce some much-needed width, no point in having a 2 bigcentre forwards and nobody to cross the ball which is why i wouldn’t mind a last minute deal for charles insomnia

Marshy what are you on,,,,, mediocrity,,, he held onto Torres and Gerrard and brought in Poulsen, Cole and Miereles,,,,, got rid of Mascherano that would have been like a virus in the team. If this is mediocrity please give me plenty more before midnight Tuesday. Law

I hear Benzema might be for sale. He has been underestimated ever since he left one of the best Lyon sides ever. He was a massive impact on the preformance of that team, and everyone could see he was absolute world-class. After mooving to a puffed up RM he has been a shaddow of his old self. He is exactly the kind of powerfull striker we need alongside Torres. So Woy:” If you would gamble 10+ mill on C.Cole, why not add another 10 and get someone who might get back to beeing world-class?” Altso he would be a long term solution that could give us many glorious moments in the times ahead!

I think bringing in Cole for that amount of money is gambling. We need Joe Cole to play wide where he is best at and another winger to provide quality service for Torres. What about Shaun Wright-Phillips for 10 million? Yes another striker would be ideal but width first!

roy hogson must not go for calton cole cos he’s not good enough for liverpoolfc.hogson can not be producing players for another club to buy them from you, such like realmadrid who want to get toivonen by all means.so you must not give realmadrid the opportunity to get the player from us,cos in future you geet your self to be blame.UP LIVERPOOL YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.UP TOIVONEN

Come on you reds…..give roy the full backing he deserves.
24hours left for the transfer list to close and everyone expects to buy two wingers and a world class striker.

Let us all be more realistic…YNWA

I think cole would be a good signing for liverpool having such a phisical striker with torres would give him much more freedome and cole has shown some fine skill and finishing maby not world class but could come alot closer if he gets to work with torres
