Tottenham make £19 million bid for England midfielder

Posted by on August 29, 2010 | 27 Comments

Ashley Young’s name has popped up a lot in the BBC gossip column throughout the summer and finally this evening, it has been reported that Tottenham have made a bid for the Aston Villa and England winger.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is still keen to add to his squad before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday and Young is seen as a possible acquisition.

With Aston Villa already out of Europe and Tottenham now in the Champions League group stages, it is understood that Young, 25, would be interested in a move to White Hart Lane.

It is rumoured that Tottenham have bid somewhere in the region of £19 million but with Villa desperate to hold onto their best player (in my opinion anyway), it remains to be seen if a deal will go through or not.

It will be fascinating to see what happens over the next 43 hours or so with regards Young’s future. I personally believe Young would be a superb signing for Spurs and I would love to see Young playing Champions League football this season.

I think Young is a fantastic player, but surely our priority should be a decent striker first….COYS

    Bollocks!!
Young IS the BEST player they have at Villa but he’s still not good enough for Spurs, no way is he worth that kinda cash! We have been in talks with the likes of Diarra, Fabiano, Muntari…. Real class, not Villa class! We are Champions league……. Villa are merely premier league mod table! They will be lucky if they stay out of a reparation scrap this season, why pay £19 now, he’ll be 1/2 that come January when they’re desperate and fighting to stay up!

    @Aero

please explain why is it so unrealistic…

    Spurs are in the CL

Villa are out of even the Europa League

Just lost the best manager they have had for a while

Have already sold their best player in Milner

And (not 100%) but I’m pretty sure Young is from around London

But laugh it up all you want for now looool

Young has 2 years left on contract, so is not worth 19m. If Young doesn’t sign new contract, next year he’ll be worth even less. Villa must either sell him now, or get kick ass manager in now to encourage Young to sign. Villa cannot afford to let Young go for nothing and need to act fast.

    T and Jon,

You being in the Champions League and everything else is irrelevant. We have him under contract and simply wouldnt accept an offer.

Areo, i think you know as well as i do that contracts arent worth the paper they are written on, they all have a get out clause.

    jon,

Its true players have buy out clauses. But you wont even come close to triggering it with offers like this. Martin O’Neill is quoted saying Ashley Young is worth 82 million. So, when we agreed a new contract with him, im sure the buy out clause was pretty substantial!

Aero – the problem is that the contract is running out. Ozil is worth more than the 18m or so paid for him – but he had 1 year left of contract – so Werder Bremen agreed. Young is approaching that stage. Villa have debts and a wage bill too high for their turnover – and Young is the highest earner. If the bid is poised right, Lerner could see too many pros as opposed to cons in that deal. I think Young will stay too, but I feel you are too confident about it.

another overrated englishman! why spurs need so many wide players is beyond me. young is a lagely lazy player who jacks it in when the going gets tough..hmm so he’ll fit right in with the crowd we have at spurs. spurs need some more players like gallas. he hates losing..at spurs it’s almost exceptable. dawson as captain really cracks me up he makes more mistakes than anyone!!! so the big question I’ve been waiting to be answered is..are spurs really in it for the football..will we ever compete with the top sides in europe..well on this one it’s a resounding no! into the group stages and all we can do is dig up names like young. so we got bentley, lennon, bale, kranjcar and rose (modric too if you play him the way harry does) so we need young? we got hudd playing up and down and palacios a right waste of space yet we need more wide men?? the only thing that’s more confusing than buying young is..’where’s sandro gone’??

Aero, just as TonyTott has stated i wouldnt feel to over confident if i was you there are obviously problems at Villa its all down to how much spurs really want this guy and in all honesty i dont think they really need him.

    TonyTott,

Im pretty sure we will agree another new contract with him before it gets to that stage. He only said a couple of weeks ago – that he would be more than happy to sit down and talk with Lerner about a new one!

ashley young would be a great adition to a quality squad, with scott parker and mabye muntari coming to the lane, spurs are building a great champuons leauge team…COYS

aero, tottenham are simply better than villa, and young knows it, if he really wants to go, which most likely he does, he will coz the club wont want to fall out about it

I’d give young a miss, if it means the cash is used to fill the central defender n forward positions.

    August 30th, 2010 @ 10:15 AM

Aero – again, too confident. Most star/top earners players have their contracts renewed before they get to the last 2 years. We recently did it with Bale, Modric. Young is waiting for something. Young knows that if he sees out his contract that Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal will come looking for him. Look at Pienaar for Everton, and especially Joe Cole.

Young is worth 10 maybe 12m. English players are morbidly overpriced. Think he goes to manu next summer

Cathal Breathnach likes Ashley Young and wants to see him playing CL football this season, so he makes up a headline just to stir things up, knowing full well that AY has already been linked with Spurs. However, you made you blatant lie so extravagant that no-one in their right mind is going to believe this claptrap.

Eh, THFC4ever, it was reported on the Sky Sports website last night, so no, I didn’t make it up. So it’s not a blatant lie. Glad I cleared that up for you.

1st of all Fozzy.. Champions league now are we, well for how long do u expect that to last??? can u honestly c us finishing 4th this season after spending no money at all??? we have a good team but its the same team as last year and everyone around us have got stronger. Normally we r 1 of the big spenders in the the summer, just as we get somewhere we decide to not spend a penny… As for needing Young… dont think we need it, we need back ups to modric and huddlestone otherwise we wont even get into europe next year!!

Anybody who even thinks that young is not a quality player does not know the game! Rednap always gets the best players in the final few hours and I think nothing will change! Would be good to see young in the CL! The bigger loss that villa have made and will make all summer will have been Oniel! He is a quality manager!

Spuds fans are forgetting that they are champions league and they lost to wigan at home!!!! :) :) :) :P :P …… mid table for spuds i think this season… ha

You spuds fans make me laugh! Have you ever won the European cup? No. Have Villa – yes.

“We’re in the Champions League” erm… Before you get ahead of your silly selfs, remember when you were bottom of the league for about 6 months? Without a doubt, you did yourselves proud getting into the CL, but you still need to prove yourselves as a consistent top 4 side. Doing it once could have just been a lucky flook…

Signing Young won’t happen, but it is a typical scatter gun style move by Rednap.
