Quite a depressing day for all Arsenal fans I can imagine.

I don’t have to go into the game really cause you all know what happened and you all know how desperate Arsenal were. It really was quite shocking.

A result like that, inevitably, sees talk of the manager’s future intensify. However, Arsene Wenger has insisted he is going nowhere.

Speaking after Sunday’s heavy defeat, Wenger was asked was there any chance of him leaving the Emirates, to which he replied: “No, not at all.”

“I am in a public job and I have to accept that.” Wenger added. “I have to make the right decision for the club and I will continue to that. We have played three games and I think you should give me more time to say if I have got it completely wrong.”

Curious to hear what all you Arsenal fans have to say on the matter. Is it time for Wenger to go or should he stay? Comments below please.

It’s Wednesday and that can only mean one thing people. It’s time for your second installment of ‘FC’s Bits & Pieces’.

This week we have plenty to discuss so lets get started. First of all, Arsene Wenger has claimed that he is willing to splash £40 million on one player, that is IF, he finds the right man. The Frenchman has come in for some heavy criticism from the Gunners faithful of late for his reluctance to spend and that criticism has only increased following the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona earlier this week.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League tie against Italian side Udinese, which incidently, they ran out 1-0 winners at the Emirates on Tuesday night, Wenger had this to say: “I will pay 30 (million) I will even pay 40 if I find the right players. But it’s not a question of money, it’s a question of quality we find. I think I have a wrong reputation of not wanting to spend money – I do not want to spend money for average players.”

I think Wenger is telling porkies. If he didn’t want to cough up £22 million to sign Valencia’s Juan Mata a matter of weeks ago, then I don’t believe him when he says he is willing to spend £40 million on the right player.

Elsewhere, Tottenham are in negotiations with Manchester City to take striker Emmanuel Adebayor to White Hart Lane. The former Arsenal man is unlikely to get a look-in at the newly named Etihad Stadium this season considering the fact Roberto Mancini has an abundance of strikers at his disposal. Adebayor, 27, is considered surplus to requirements and as a result, City are desperate to offload him and his £170,000 a week wage packet.

It is expected that Adebayor will now join Spurs on a season-long loan deal with City continuing to pay a chunk of his hefty wages.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Southampton now lead the way after their emphatic 5-2 win away to Ipswich on Tuesday night. Nigel Adkins’ men were only promoted back to the Championship a number of months ago, but it seems they are more than capable of sustaining a promotion challenge this season, much to the delight of Saints fans. Also, in the Championship, West Ham picked up their second win in three games last night with an impressive 4-0 win away to Watford. To see how the Championship table currently looks, click this link.

We like to include some transfer rumours in FC’s Bits & Pieces and this week we have a few intriguing ones for you. Internazionale have this afternoon announced that Wesley Sneijder is not for sale, claiming the Dutch international is “untouchable”. This comes just days after Manchester United apparently pulled out of any possible deal. Anyway, enough of Sneijder, what about Joey Barton. Well, West Ham want to bring him to Upton Park before the transfer window shuts. Everton, the club who have been as quiet as a pupil outside the Headmaster’s office during this transfer window, look as though they may be about to dip into the market and sign Manchester City’s out-of-favour defender Nedum Onuoha.

Finally, to end this week’s FC’s Bit & Pieces, we will leave you with a quote from Nottingham Forest boss Steve McClaren following his side’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Millwall at the weekend. The former England boss had this to say: “For 3/4 of the field we looked very good, but nothing in the final 1/3.” Schteve is clearly not the scharpest tool in the boxch.

Following another trophyless season at the Emirates, I feel that changes need to be made regarding some internal policies, should the club wish to maintain it’s stature as one of the Premier League’s so-called “big four”.

There is absolutely no question about what Arsène Wenger has done for the North London club, but with the expectations that come hand in hand with managing a club of such stature, it comes as somewhat of a surprise to me that the Frenchman’s position hasn’t been as under fire as one might expect.

Don’t get me wrong, Wenger is a terrific manager in many respects. His ability to spot and nurture young talent is up there with the best, but is this enough in the modern game? The expectation, and almost requirement, placed on some of the top clubs to spend enormous amounts of money in order to compete at the highest level is becoming increasingly more prominent. The emergence of Manchester City in the last couple of years as a threat and title contender is solely down to a huge cash injection at Eastlands, and brings added pressure on other clubs to spend. This is not a policy Wenger is comfortable with, but is it one Arsenal must aim to adopt in order to succeed?

In many ways, Wenger’s transfer policy of investing in youth and avoiding splashing the cash on experienced high profile, high earning signings has worked to an extent. Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere among others have been given their opportunity at a young age and have become regulars at international level. It is great to see young players given a chance in the top flight, but is it this trust in the development of younger athletes that has proven to be Arsenal’s downfall in recent years? There has undoubtedly been some very talented players originating from the Arsenal academy, along with those brought into the set-up from abroad, but with the ever inflating price tags placed upon the gifted footballers of our generation, is this trust in youth enough to succeed?

Even in the current transfer window, Arsenal appear to be more of a selling club. Some of their key players are continuously being linked with moves away from the Emirates. While Premier League rivals Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and even Tottenham nowadays are pursuing Europe’s elite, Arsenal’s top priority seems to be trying to hold onto their prized assets. Midfielder Samir Nasri is currently testing the willingness of the Arsenal hierarchy to loosen their purse strings and persuade him to commit to the club. Arsenal’s stubbornness to abide by a salary cap puts some of their players in a position of power whereby they may feel the need to leave the club to meet their financial desires.

Is it stubborn, arrogant, ignorant, foolish to ignore the clubs around you throwing cash at agents and engaging in bidding wars with astronomical amounts of money to secure top players, while you stick to your guns, or is it simply the morally right thing to do?

While everyone likes to see managers given a chance, is it fair to say Arsène has had his? It is, in a way, admirable that Wenger insists on playing the game “the right way” and how entertaining and beautiful football stems from this policy, but when results do not ensue, it is surely time to question such policies. It would of course be a difficult and heavy hearted decision to remove Wenger from his position after everything he has brought to Arsenal football club, but personally I feel something has to change in order for the club to progress. Perhaps it is more a case of Arsenal changing their ways in order to compete with fellow Premier League and European clubs, as opposed to changing their manager, but as much as it saddens me to say, I feel the club could get left behind by the modern game, unless some of its policies are addressed.

Signings need to be made this summer if they are to challenge next season, but who should Arsene Wenger be looking to bring to the Emirates.

As you may already now, Arsenal have missed out on the signing of Blackburn’s Phil Jones, who looks all set to join Manchester United in a deal worth £17 million.

Dozens of names have already been linked with a move to the Gunners, but as of yet, no major signings have been made. Should Wenger bring Lassana Diarra back to the club or perhaps he should gamble on West Ham’s Robert Green, who as we all know from this time last year, is prone to the odd mistake.

Speaking of gambling, why not have a bet on the British Open 2011 now!

One thing is for sure, if Arsenal don’t strengthen this summer, they will go yet another season without lifting a bit of silverware, and that would surely spell the end for Wenger.

It is bound to be an intriguing few weeks and months at Arsenal, but who do you think will arrive in north London? Comments below please.

The 3-1 defeat to Stoke City today ended any chance Arsenal had of winning the title this season and it gives us the opporutunity to run a poll.

The defeat comes just days after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona and just two weeks after they lost in the Carling Cup final to Birmingham.

A disastorous two weeks leaves the north London giants pinning all their hopes of silverware on the Premier League title, but I certainly wouldn’t be betting on them to overtake United at the top of the table.

So, should Arsene Wenger be sacked or maybe he should walk? What do you think? Comments below please.

Arsene Wenger’s men currently sit 2nd in the Premier League table, five points behind Manchester United and many, including myself, felt they needed to sign a fresh face or two if they are to challenge for the title this season.

Several names were linked with moves to the Emirates over the past few weeks, but in the end, Wenger opted not to sign anyone and personally, I reckon that will cost them come the end of the season.

Signing a player like Gary Cahill may have made all the difference, but unfortunately, it’s too late now and Arsenal will have to make do with what they have.

What do you think? Will Arsenal regret not spending in this transfer window? Comments below please.
