Only a matter of months ago Ally McCoist’s Rangers team found themselves perched nicely at the summit of the Scottish Premier League. Fifteen points clear of bitter Glasgow rivals, star striker, West Ham target, Nikica Jelavic boldly proclaimed to the Scottish tabloids that the league was over and McCoist’s side would secure the title in his maiden season having taken over from the experienced Walter Smith. However, following Kris Commons’ similar outburst at the tail end of last season you would have thought Jelavic would know to keep his mouth firmly fixed shut.

Now only a few months later Neil Lennon’s team has magnificently overhauled the gigantic lead that the Gers once had. A twelve match winning streak continued Saturday with a 2-0 away win over Paisley side St Mirren with goals coming from young revelation James Forrest and a top drawer finish from captain Scott Brown. It was a performance of champions, pinned back for the majority of the game by an up and coming Saints team the class, grit and determination of the Celts saw them eventually prevail as victors in a tight affair at Greenhill Road.

McCoist has said, “They have put a good run together. Equally, we had a fantastic run at the start of the season. Our form has shaded a little bit and Celtic’s has probably been the opposite”, tipping has hat to the fact that Celtic have vastly improved since the start of the season which has resulted in Rangers fifteen point November lead now being a 4 point Celtic advantage.

“I always believed we would close the gap but I didn’t realise it would be so quickly, but that is testament to the players’ consistency,” said Lennon, who is equally shocked about how quickly they have turned around the points deficit. Celtic’s run of form as coincided with a period of Rangers struggle with resulted in a 1-1 home draw to Aberdeen on Saturday. An injury to play maker Steven Naismith has seen the Govan side struggle for invention and flair as they have had to rely on the ever-likely departing Jelavic, an injured Kyle Lafferty and the “just about finished” David Healy to bang the goals in. That is no disrespect to the three mentioned, Jelavic has supplied the goals to keep Rangers in it, Lafferty is injured through no fault of his own and David Healy finds himself playing for his boyhood heroes at a time of severe financial restraint for the club. It is clear that he is putting his all into the Rangers cause but that doesn’t however seem to be enough.

Early in the January transfer window Rangers have moved to strengthen with the signing of Mervan Celik an a free transfer and are looking at the Bosnian striker Zlatan Misimovic for some much need firepower up front. However if Rangers are going to avoid the embarrassment of losing the league after having a fifteen point lead then they better get into gear and start picking up some much need wins.

Scottish giants Celtic, Premier League side Wigan and Championship outfit Derby County are all desperate to sign Kilmarnock striker Conor Sammon before the transfer window shuts later tonight.

Sammon, 24, has been in impressive goalscoring form this season, scoring 18 goals in 26 games and has caught the attention of several managers around Britain.

The former UCD and Derry City man is understood to be open to a move away from Rugby Park. However, Sammon turned down the chance to join Scunthorpe earlier this month and with just a few hours to go before the window shuts, it remains to be seen if he will be on the move.

What do you think? Who will Sammon be playing for when the window shuts? Comments below please.

Manchester City keeper Joe Hart has three years left on his contract but is currently one of the lowest-paid members of the squad on a reported £28,000 a week.

Now, the club are set to offer him a new five year contract worth £70,000 a week, a massive £42,000 a week pay rise. The club also want to put Hart further off-limits by placing a £20 million price-tag on his head.

But, where to next for the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given?

Given, 34, has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Celtic and Fulham over the previous weeks and now it seems AS Roma have entered the race to sign City’s out-of-favour goalie. One Italian paper reported that City were looking to recoup £2-3 million for the former Newcastle man.

Given had previously warned that he would leave if he was dropped as City’s number one and now that has happened, it seems Given is sticking to his promise.

It seems City now want to sign Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as backup to Hart. Chelsea recently had a £4 million rejected by Stoke for Begovic but City are understood to be monitoring the situation as they prepare for life without Given. Begovic is particularly attractive to top clubs because his time at Portsmouth’s academy means he qualifies as a home-grown player under new Premier League rules.

So where do you think Given will go next?

Personally, I believe Mark Schwarzer will go to Arsenal and Given will re-join his old manager Mark Hughes at Fulham. But that’s just what I think, we want to hear where you think he will go and whether or not you reckon Hart is deservedly City’s first choice keeper?

If you believe what you read in the papers, Robbie Keane could be set to sign for new club number 9 with the Republic of Ireland international attracting interest from both Sunderland and Aston Villa.

Keane, 29, left Tottenham back in January to spend the rest of this season on loan at Scottish giants side Celtic and in fairness to him, he has been scoring for fun in what has been a largely disappointing season for the Glasgow club.

With Tottenham now having 4 quality strikers on their books in the form of Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Eidur Gudjohnsen, it is thought that Keane has no future at White Hart Lane and should a bid of around £8 million come in for him, he will be sent packing.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is understood to be very keen on the former Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan, Leeds and Liverpool striker. With Darren Bent currently banging in the goals for the Black Cats, I reckon the pair, who used to play together at Tottenham, could form a decent partnership at the Stadium of Light.

Martin O’Neill is also believed to be keen to bring Keane to Villa Park, however it remains to be seen whether O’Neill will still be in charge at Aston Villa come the start of next season. There has been talk that O’Neill and Villa owner, Randy Lerner, no longer see eye to eye with one another and that O’Neill’s departure may be imminent.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this one. Will Keane leave Tottenham this summer for new club number 9? Comments below please.

It is perhaps unsurprising that as we get ready for the January transfer window, the name Robbie Keane is at the centre of much of the transfer speculation.

The Tottenham striker has made no fewer than seven moves in his 12 year career, however it seems as though he may be about to turn that seven into an eight.

Keane, 29, looks to be on his way out of White Hart Lane after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp threatened to strip the Republic of Ireland international of his captaincy at the club, due to his heavy involvement in the now infamous Christmas party earlier this month.

Regardless of any christmas parties, I personally think that Keane himself may have looked for a move away from north London next month, giving the fact that he has fallen down in the pecking order of late at the club. As it is, Keane might be forced out of the club to an extent, however only time will tell.

Celtic are among the favourites to sign the former Liverpool, Inter Milan, Leeds, Coventry and Wolves striker, with Tony Mowbray priced at 4/1 during the upcoming window. Sunderland are 6/1 whilst midlands rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham are both 16/1 to sign Keane.

I really don’t know what’s going to happen in the coming weeks, however I would not be at all surprised to see Keano on the move once again.

Tottenham striker Robbie Keane has today been linked with a January move to Scottish giants Celtic.

The Republic of Ireland international only rejoined Tottenham last February after spending an unsuccessful (to put it nicely) six months with Liverpool.

Keane, 29, has been previously been linked with a move to Parkhead, however the lack of funds at Celtic has prevented any move ever happening. Tony Mowbray is now preparing to offer Harry Redknapp half of the £14 million Spurs spent on re-signing Keane last February.

To be honest, I would be surprised if Celtic got their hands on Keane for as little as the rumoured £7 million. It’s fair to say that Keane hasn’t really got off to a flyer since returning to White Hart Lane and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Redknapp decides to to offload him in January.

I am keen to hear what you Spurs fans, and indeed Celtic fans have to say on this one. Please leave your comments below.

Does anyone else think the Eduardo diving situation has been blown out of all proportion? I do.

In case you have missed it, this is the whole situation condensed down to just one sentence.

Celtic players want Arsenal striker Eduardo banned for two games because he dived during their Champions League tie last night.

There’s no doubt about it. Eduardo dived, but to say he should be banned for two games because of it is just ridiculous. If that rule is in place, then Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo should be banned for 9,354 games.

I, like the majority of other football fans, don’t like to see players diving, however it happens. Simple as that. Unfortunately it’s a part of the modern game, so banning Eduardo would make no sense whatsoever.

What do you think? Comments below please.

Tottenham have today been linked with a £10 million move for Celtic midfielder Scott Brown, however I’m not too sure Harry Redknapp really needs him.

Brown, 24, is considered by many as one of Scotland’s finest midfield players and in recent years has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League.

The Scotland international has spent two seasons at Celtic Park, making over 90 appearances in the process. He won the SFA’s Player’s Player of the Year last season, despite the fact Celtic missed out on the SPL title to bitter rivals Rangers.

The reason why I don’t think Brown will be on his way to White Hart Lane is the fact that Spurs already have an abundance of midfielders to chose from in the shape of Tom Huddlestone, Wilson Palacios, Luka Modric, Jermaine Jenas and Jamie O’Hara.

So what do you think? Do Tottenham really need Scott Brown or should they be spending money in other areas of the field? Comments below please.
