The World Cup just a little more than a month away, and I have created A World Cup Report, a subset of my own site, A Football Report, to cover the beautiful game at its grandest stage. A World Cup Report has contributors from all over the world sharing their views on everything related to the World Cup.

Anyway, to make the time speed up I launched the “What’s Going On Here? World Cup Caption Contest”. For the next four weeks there will be four pictures on A World Cup Report, and each week the person with the best (most creative, funny, etc…) caption will win a prize! This week the prize is an official World Cup jersey. So if you can think of a good caption for the picture below with Lamps and JT, email contest@afootballreport.com.

Fair play to Wayne Bridge. In yesterday’s Chelsea vs Manchester City game at Stamford Bridge, Wayne Bridge refused to shake former friend and team mate John Terry’s hand – and so he should have.

With every pair of eyes in the stadium and indeed those watching around the world glued to the pre-match handshake, Bridge expectedly declined Terry’s hand and instead greeted him with a cold stare.

If giving up the honour to play for your country in the World Cup finals because of what Terry did, I don’t think anyone actually believed Bridge would bring himself to shake Terry’s hand.

As Craig Bellamy put it in his post match interview with Sky Sports after the game: “I think everyone in football knows what the guy (Terry) is like.” Never a truer word.

Terry is the captain of Chelsea and was the Captain of England. He is a leader on the pitch but an utter idiot off it. The Bridge story isn’t the worst of Terry’s doings but perhaps just the final straw in an overly long list.

To think Terry could have kept the captaincy is ludicrous. Fabio Capello made the right decision in stripping Terry of the captaincy.

One bright side to this story is that the English media already have an excuse at the ready when they crash out in the group stages in South Africa – John Terry. Or if that fails they could always blame Wayne for pulling out of the squad.

Anyway, enough rambling. Hopefully this is now the end of this story now and we can go back to concentrating on football or if you like gambling, head over to the BettingExpert.com Casino.

Fabio Capello has announced he will take into account players’ off the pitch conduct when he makes his World Cup Squad selection and that could beg the question, how many players will the Italian be left with?

We all know many of the English players are not the most clean cut characters and with the English press seemingly doing their best to ruin England’s chances before the World Cup even begins it could be that England go to World Cup 2010 without any of their Premiership stars.

This is of course an overreaction but the two players most likely to miss out seem to be John Terry and Ashley Cole. The Chelsea pair have hit the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons and Fabio Capello has already proved he is willing to take drastic action by replacing John Terry as England captain. If any of the England stars were dropped for off the pitch conduct it would surely affect the England World Cup Odds massively.

England’s star player has to be Wayne Rooney and we all know he has had some well publicised off the pitch antics. Let’s hope he keeps up his good behaviour because if he doesn’t go to the World Cup, then England might as well not bother either.

Despite the fact that Manchester United are playing with the most dangerous striker in all of football at the moment, Chelsea still sit top of the Premier League table two points clear of United and six points above Arsenal. And even though Carlo Ancelotti decided not to do anything over the transfer window, Chelsea still have the strongest squad depth and are favourites to get their hands on a bit of Premiership silverware come May. But beyond the incredible footballing prowess of the Chelsea squad is the fact that these world-class talents are led by John Terry, a man who’s lack of integrity (to say the least) has been recently exposed.

We saw a truly uninspired Chelsea performance against Hull on Tuesday (some credit should go to Hull for their efforts), so one cannot help but thinking the squad has been shaken up by the recent allegations. The real question that could decide how the Blues approach the closing months of the season is how the squad will react to the notion that their captain does not have any sense of common decency. Now there are a few scenarios that could play out, but I’m going to narrow it down to the two most-likely reactions that we will see from the squad.

1. Being professional footballers who make vast sums of money and care about the club’s success, the Chelsea squad will put their egos aside and focus solely on football. Also, most of these lads are heading to South Africa in June, so that might make it easier to concentrate on maintaining a high level of individual form. Arsene Wenger made the point a while back that players don’t need to be friends off the pitch to play well together, and I think this is true over a short period of time, but not as the basis of running the club. Anyway, the players could very well decide that John Terry’s actions were poor, but are just simply not worth worrying about.

2. John Terry is not just a Chelsea player, he is Chelsea captain. JT has been the club’s icon in recent era of success. To say that his acts can just be forgiven and ignored by his fellow players, as well as the Chelsea supporters, is just too idealistic. We often forget that many footballers at major clubs like Chelsea are role models for their respective communities. Players of Terry’s stature are meant to be supporting charities, not impregnating former teammates’ significant others. Sure, once you’re on the pitch being spurred on by thousands of fans it is easy to get on with the game as usual. But training on a daily basis with captain Terry, who is instructing you or giving you advice, could prove to be far too much for any footballer to deal with. If this is the case, Chelsea could find themselves in some very rough waters over the coming weeks.

(By the way, it should be noted that Michael ‘The Bison’ Essien’s absence due to injury has been tough for Chelsea as well.)

So go on and have your say! Will Chelsea be able to fight on to win the Premier League, or will the recent events off the field prove to be too much for the squad to deal with?
