I was shocked to see that Lee Cattermole has today joined Sunderland for an initial fee of just £6 million, the fee will rise to £10 million based on appearances and international caps etc;.

The England under-21 international was strongly linked with a move to the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, however it is Steve Bruce who has today won the race.

I don’t really know why I admire Cattermole so much, but I do.

He is just 20-years of age and he has already captained a Premier League club at Wigan. He has that bull-dog like approach which, for a midfield player, is vital. He is certainly not afraid of a tackle, although he does sometime mis-calculate his challenges.

I personally feel he has the potential to become the best midfielder in the country and I would be extremely surprised if one of the so-called, bigger clubs doesn’t come in for him in a year or two. In fact, I’m surprised none of the big 4 made a move for him this summer.

There have already been some cracking signings this summer, including Manchester City’s pruchase of Gareth Barry for just £12 million, however I firmly believe that Sunderland have today completed the signing of the summer in Cattermole.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say. Is Cattermole really the signing of the summer or was it someone else? Leave your comments below.

Liverpool are ready to make a £12 million bid for Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole after it was revealed that Xabi Alonso has handed in a written transfer request.

The England under-21 international has been strongly linked with a move away from the JJB Stadium in recent days, with both Arsenal and Sunderland understood to be interested.

Cattermole, 21, only arrived at Wigan 12 months ago for just £3.5 million, however his terrific form for both club and country over the last year has seen his value rise significantly.

Rafa Benitez will obviously need to add another midfielder to the ranks at Anfield with Alonso now looking set for a £28 million move to Real Madrid and Cattermole to me, would be a quality addition. He is only young and I think with the right guidance, he will develop into one of the best midfielders in the country.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan has insisted that Cattermole will still be wearing the blue and white of Wigan next season, however with clubs like Liverpool now interested, I find it hard to imagine that they can hold onto him for too much longer. What do you think? Would Cattermole be a decent replacement for Alonso? Comments below please.

The England under-21 international impressed during last season’s Premier League and continued his good form in this summer’s European under-21 Championships.

Former Wigan boss, Steve Bruce has been strongly linked with a move for Cattermole, 21, in recent weeks, with Sunderland willing to cough up £7 million. That is below Wigan’s valuation of the player and as a result has seen Sunderland cool their interest, leaving Arsene Wenger in the clear to make a move.

It is thought that Wigan are willing to let Cattermole leave the JJB if a bid of £10 million is made. Arsenal have money to spend after the sale of Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City last week, and with Wenger currently in the market for a new midfielder, Cattermole is seen as a very possible arrival.

I have to admit, I’m a huge fan of Cattermole’s. He is a Roy Keane type player who really gets himself about the pitch and I think he would be a quality signing for Arsenal. He is only 21 years of age and with the right guidance, ie, Arsene Wenger, I feel he could become one of the best midfielders in the country. I would be surprised if Arsenal are the only club to match Wigan’s valuation of the player, so stay tuned to Football Corner for all the latest on Cattermole’s future.

Is Cattermole really Arsenal material? Share your thoughts on the matter by leaving a comment below.
