Well we have waited quite a while to see some Premier League action (83 days to be exact … I think) and to be fair, the opening day wasn’t what we hoped for. From the six Premier League games which went ahead today, there were just the 11 goals, 2 red cards and at the end of the day, it is Bolton who are sitting pretty at the top of the pile.

Owen Coyle’s men gave Premier League new-boys QPR a taste of what to expect over the coming months with a thumping 4-0 win at Loftus Road. Goals from Gary Cahil, Ivan Klasnic, Fabrice Muamba and an own-goal by Danny Gabbidon ensured a miserable start to the new campaign for QPR boss Neil Warnock. The home side ended the game with just 10-men, Clint Hill shown a straight red card in stoppage time, and without Kieron Dyer who was stretchered off with just 6 minutes on the clock. It was later revealed that the former Newcastle man had broken his metatarsal.

At Anfield, Liverpool got off to a slightly disappointing start against Steve Bruce’s Sunderland. Things started well for the Merseyside club when Uruguyan Luis Suarez gave them the lead just minutes after he had missed a golden opportunity from the spot. It was one of Sunderland’s debutants, Sebastian Larsson, who leveled matters with a superb effort (watch Match of the Day later to see) to send the Black Cats home with a point.

Elsewhere, Fulham and Aston Villa played out a goaless draw at Craven Cottage (enough said).

Wolves came from a goal behind against Blackburn to run out 2-1 winners at Ewood Park. Mauro Formica had put the home side in front, but Steve Kean’s men were pegged back just minutes later. Scottish international Steven Fletcher equalised for Wolves, before Stephen Ward grabbed all three points for the visitors with an emphatic finish after Kevin Doyle missed from the penalty spot.

Norwich and Wigan had to settle for a share of the spoils at the DW Stadium. It was the home side who drew first blood when Ben Watson converted from the spot with 21 minutes on the clock. However, the sides were level just before the break when former Shelbourne man Wesley Hoolahan netted for the Canaries. 1-1 it finished.

And finally, onto St.James’ Park where Newcastle and Arsenal failed to find the back of the net and as a result, they shared the points. The big talking point of the game came when Gunners new boy Gervinho went down in the area, only to see his penalty appeal waved away. However, it didn’t end there. Newcastle’s Joey Barton took exception to Gervinho’s attempt to win a penalty and decided to, how should I put this, help him back to his feet and then, a mill ensued. Gervinho decided to raise his hands and Barton saw an opportunity to hit the deck and as a result, the Arsenal man was shown a straight red. I don’t want to get into it too much, but to be honest, it was poor sportsmanship from Barton and I think he knows that.

Anyway, what did you make of today’s action? Comments below please.

For the past few days I have been giving my predictions on how I think this year’s Premier League will go and today we reach the climax and I now give my opinion on who will make the Top 4, who will not, who will impress and who will not, and ultimately, who will be champions come the end of May.

So Here we go :
__________________________________________________________________

Arsenal: The most crucial season of Arsene Wenger’s time at Arsenal waits. A chase for four trophies evaporated in the space of weeks last term to make it six years without silverware – criticism of Wenger is at an all-time high, the club were booed by their own fans after failing to win their own pre-season tournament, and with two of their key players, Nasri and Fabregas sure to make summer exits, much depends on whether Ramsey, Wilshire and Walcott deliver. If Wenger can use the soon to be received funds brought in from the sale of two of his stars to address the central defensive problem and bring in a physical midfielder which they lacked last year, Arsenal could be an even more united, stronger force next year. However, as things stand I see Arsenal missing out on the Champions League places for the first time in 13 years.

Prediction: 5th
__________________________________________________________________

Liverpool: Liverpool looked a completely revitalised side in the second half of last season under legendary manager Kenny Daglish, who has invested in over £100 million on talent since he took over after the disastrous spell under Roy Hodgson. Downing has been bought to provide supply for Carroll while Henderson and Adam will strengthen in midfield, giving added freedom to Steven Gerrard once he is fit after groin surgery. I expect Liverpool to make a strong case for the title, however ultimately the strength of the other sides will come on top and Liverpool should fall short right around Easter, although I expect Champions league football, the aim that owner John W. Henry and Kenny Daglish have set, will be achieved.

Prediction: 4th
__________________________________________________________________

Chelsea: Its seems almost tradition at this point, that with the new season, we welcome a new boss at Stamford Bridge. It is the turn of Andre Villas-Boas to take the Hotseat this time, after guiding Porto to a Europa League and domestic double last year. At 33, Villas-Boas will be in the same age bracket as some of his star players and will need to find a way in which to gain his players respect in the same way and older and more celebrated manager such as Ancelotti could. Chelsea have failed to bring in enough talent and need to find a way to play both Drogba and Torres, however I expect Torres to do nothing but come good, and to at least hit double figures this year. I sense the Champions League will be the main objective this year, but I feel this mature team could find it hard to keep up with the youth and physique of the two Manchester clubs in the title race.

Prediction: 3rd
__________________________________________________________________

Manchester City: City should gain great self-belief from finally winning a cup and I believe this will sustain them for a more concentrated attempt on the title this season, inspired by David Silva, one of the league’s most watchable performers. Sergio Aguero is expected to fill the goal scoring void that is soon to be left by fellow countryman Carlos Tevez, and Dzeko also needs to find his goal scoring touch. Mancini and City are beginning to realise their potential although are not yet a team of eleven as of yet, but eleven individuals playing on the same team, thus just missing out on the title.

Prediction: 2nd
__________________________________________________________________

Manchester United: Ferguson has bought well with the purchase of an adequate young keeper in David de Gea from Atletico Madrid. Phil Jones is talented enough to act as direct cover for any defensive crisis and Ashley Young’s arrival from Aston Villa adds versatility to an already effective attack of Rooney and Hernandez. He will also provide competition to spark Nani to a return to his best. Cleverley and Welback are expected to break into the first team and rise to the challenge of becoming important players at the club by the season’s end, impressing hugely at the Community Shield last week. Manchester United may not be good enough to knock Barcelona off their perch just yet, but they certainly are good enough to win title number 20.

Prediction : Champions
__________________________________________________________________

Tottenham Hotspur: Much of Tottenham’s chances of a return to Champions League football depend heavily on whether Luka Modric decides to stay at White Hart Lane. Little transfer activity has been made although retaining the services of the Croatian would be seen as a new signing in its own. Sandro could prove to be a real key figure after impressing hugely in the second half of last season and if Bale can rediscover his good form, there’s no questioning Tottenham’s ability to beat anyone on their day. Europa League will ultimately be a distraction; however an exit before the Quarter final stage could push the spurs to even reach fourth.

Prediction: 6th
__________________________________________________________________

Everton: The lack of any new signings as yet has left some Everton fans in a state of mid-summer anxiety. However, there’s real quality amongst the Goodison ranks and David Moyes has worked wonders in the past with a lack of money at his disposal. Everton missed Fellani, Arteta, Rodwell and Saha for most of the campaign and still achieved a seventh place finish last time around. A lack of depth could be a problem, however if they can keep Jagielka from making an exit while making sure their best players stay fit, theres no reason the Toffees can’t challenge for Europe and make a good cup run.

Prediction: 7th
__________________________________________________________________

Sunderland: Steve Bruce has clearly learned a lot of lessons from last year, in which his side were hit heavily by injuries, already signing nine new arrivals, including Wes Brown and John O Shea from Man United and snatching the promising Connor Wickham from under the noses of Liverpool. Craig Bellamy is said to be a target, and adding the Welshman would no doubt be a positive. Sunderland should have enough young talent and experience to challenge for Europe; however a lack of big money buys will mean the Black Cats will just miss out.

Prediction: 8th
__________________________________________________________________

Aston Villa: The Villa Park faithful have had a tough couple of months, the unpopular managerial appointment of a man who was their most hated rival’s boss just days before, added with the departures of two of the Premier League’s best wide players in Young and Downing to Liverpool and Man United respectively has not been received well. N’Zogbia has come in from Wigan but fans are unconvinced, much will be relied on Marc Albrighton and Darren, but if McLeish, as expected, plays with the negative tactics displayed at Birmingham, and doesn’t get the good start he needs, it could be a very frustrating season ahead. Having said that, I think Bent’s goals should prove sufficient for a top ten finish.

Prediction: 9th
__________________________________________________________________

Stoke City : Stoke have worked to improve their defensive situation by bringing in Jonathon Woodgate and Matthew Upson on free transfers, although Stoke desperately need another striker due to injuries to Sidibe and Fuller, leaving both missing the start of the season. A move for Carlton Cole fell through although Stoke’s first eleven is fairly strong. Europa League football could prove a distraction but I expect Tony Pulis to make several deadline day deals just like previous years, and to lay down the law that the league is the main priority, picking up points away from home like they have done so much in the past.

Prediction: 10th
Enter now!

With the new football season fast approaching, the back pages of any newspapers are packed with transfer speculation.

One of the ongoing biggest stories is the seemingly annual discussion about whether or not Cesc Fabregas will leave Arsenal for Barcelona. A story that has gained momentum for the past few transfer windows now seems likely with the Spanishi side set to pay around £30 million for the Gunners captain.

Another headline grabber has been whether Luca Modric and possibly Gareth Bale will remain at White Hart Lane come the start of the new season after Chelsea had an approach for the former rejected recently, it could well be a case that Tottenham Hotspur spend the next eight weeks fending of all on comers for their stars over actually looking to strengthen the team after missing out on a place in the Champions League.

However, it is current Premier League Champions, Manchester United, who have been most active in the transfer market. United have swooped efficiently three times already over the last couple of weeks, firstly signing Phil Jones, the England Under-21 Captain to the club from Blackburn for a fee believed to be worth more than £16m. They quickly followed that up by signing Ashley Young for £15 million. The 25 year old who has a regular spot in the England squad these days, is a versatile player who can operate on either wing with an ability to score goals from anywhere and will be a great addition to the United sqaud.

The latest Old Trafford signing could be the most significant. Provided the rumours are true, Sir Alex Ferguson will have a new number one in the form of David de Gea from Atletico Madrid. The 20 year old is back in Spain after playing in goal for the victorious Spanish Under-21 team who have just lifted the Under-21 European Championship in Denmark. The fee said to be in the region of £18m, has been described as a bargain by Pepe Reina, the Liverpool keeper, who is convinced that De Gea can become one of the best in the world and confirmed that he is the ideal replacement for the now retired Edwin Van De Saar.

The spending from the Old Trafford club has not necessarily stopped there either. There are many reports linking the club to Modric, who they see as the perfect player to run their midfield. To secure his services, United would probably need to offer cash plus player and Dimitar Berbatov may well be heading back to Spurs.

Other clubs who have already completed major signings include Liverpool, who have spent £20m on exciting midfield prospect Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, who is seen as a longer term replacement for Steven Gerrard.

Newcomers Norwich have made three signings already with a promise of more to come as manager, Paul Lambert, tries to develop a squad that can stay in the top flight. So far, they have secured the services of striker, James Vaughan from Everton for £2.5m, fellow striker, Steve Morison from Millwall for a reported £2.8m and midfielder, Elliott Bennett, from Brighton for £1.5m. Fellow newcomers, Swansea have made just one signing of any significance so far who is striker, Danny Graham from Watford for a fee of £3.5 million.

However, in the all important battle to win the Premier League it is Man Utd who have set the pace in the transfer market and as reigning champions, look most likely to retain their crown in 2012. Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool will all harbour ambitions of closing the gap on United at the top but if any is to be successful then they must all look to up their game in order to strengthen their squads.

Liverpool are 9 points behind Chelsea, who currently occupy that 4th spot in the Premier League table, but a recent run of good form has seen the Merseyside club’s odds to qualify for the Champions League slashed.

With top class strikers in the form of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll now at Anfield, do you think Liverpool can still finish in the top 4 this season? Vote now.

For what it’s worth, I am voting no.
