The former Liverpool boss has failed to impress since arriving at the San Siro during the summer and has paid the price.

Even winning the FIFA Club World Cup couldn’t save Benitez and the Spaniard must not look for another job.

I can’t say I’m really surprised by Inter’s decision to sack Benitez. I was surprised to see him get the job in the first place and now that he is gone, I can see the Italian side start to climb towards the top of Serie A.

The current champions of Europe sit in a disappointing 7th in Serie A and will no doubt be hoping the next man to take the hot seat can improve on that.

It has been reported today that the former Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini has held talks with Liverpool officials.

Pellegrini was recently sacked by Real Madrid after failing to bring silverware to the Bernabeu in his first season at the club and has since been replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Following the departure of Rafael Benitez from Anfield, Liverpool are currently searching for the right man to replace the Spaniard but it would appear as though they may be closing in on their man.

Roy Hodgson has been strongly linked with the hot seat at Liverpool. However, the Fulham manager has repeatedly ruled himself out of the running to take the reins at the Merseyside club.

Personally, I have my doubts about Pellegrini. Last season, he failed to win anything with a side which included the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Kaka so how he could win something with a side who have a serious lack of quality players, I really don’t know.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this one. Feel free to leave your comments below.

Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and as a result, the speculation surrounding Benitez increased.

The Spaniard has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks including the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan but for whatever reasons he remains at Anfield.

That may be about to change though. It has been reported that Benitez is in negotiations with the club with regards his departure from Liverpool.

Personally, I believe this is very good news for Liverpool. Many fans have blamed the club’s American owners for not doing well on the pitch but Gillett and Hicks can’t blame them for everything. Benitez is a shite manager and the sooner Liverpool get rid of him, the better.

Now, who do you lot want to see as the next manager of Liverpool? Comments below please.

The current Fulham manager is apparently being lined up to become the new Liverpool manager this summer with Rafa Benitez likely to make his way to Juventus.

Hodgson has worked wonders during his time at Craven Cottage, getting Fulham to the Europa League final this season, something which Benitez couldn’t manage at Liverpool. I personally would be fascinated to see how Hodgson would do at a massive club like Liverpool but whether or not it happens remains to be seen.

After today’s draw against Birmingham, Liverpool now find themselves 4 points behind Manchester City in the race for 4th spot and many, including myself, think Champions League qualification is now out of the Merseyside club’s reach.

Before the season started, Liverpool were tipped to well in both the Premier League and cup competitions, however with just a handful of games to go, their only chances of silverware are in the Europa League and personally, I can see them being knocked out of that competition by Benfica on Thursday.

They didn’t get far in either the FA Cup or Carling Cup and after their early exit in the Champions League, there was speculation that Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez would be on his way out of Anfield. Why they didn’t get rid of him back in December, I really don’t know.

Obviously the money is an issue, given the fact Liverpool would have to pay Benitez several million pounds should they decide to sack him. If and when Liverpool fail to finish 4th, I firmly believe Benitez should and will be sent packing.

Liverpool need a top manager to bring them forward because at the moment, under Benitez, they are going backwards. The owners unwillingness to cough up funds hasn’t helped Benitez, however with the players Liverpool have, they should easily be finishing in the top 4.

His decision to take Fernando Torres off without half an hour to go at St. Andrews today baffled me. Benitez said Torres was exhausted, however I am of the belief that if you desperately need a goal to win a game you keep your best players on, as long as they aren’t injured. Torres wasn’t injured yet Benitez decided to bring on Ngog.

So basically, I believe Liverpool will finish 5th or 6th and Benitez will be gone.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this. Comments below please.

Predict the score in the Barcelona v Arsenal game on Tuesday and you could win yourself a prize. It’s that easy. Send your prediction for the game, along with the name of a player who you think will score in the game at the Camp Nou to football.corner@gmail.com. Make sure to include your name and address in the email to make your entry valid! Good luck.

Liverpool have now played 31 games in this Premier League season and have lost 10 of them.

With only a handful of games left in the season, Rafa Benitez’ men now sit in 6th place in the table following today’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

Tottenham currently occupy 4th spot with Liverpool now four points behind with the Londoners also having a game in hand. Manchester City remain wedged between the two and are currently the bookies favourites to take the final Champions League spot.

I for one hope Liverpool don’t finish 4th. They just don’t deserve it. They have won just 5 more games than they have lost this season and how they are still in the running for 4th is incredible. I will openly admit I am a Man City fan and obviously I would love to see us clinch 4th, however if it isn’t to be Roberto Mancini’s men then I would just hate to see Liverpool make it.

What do you think? Comments below please.
