The Dutch international struggled to make a real impact on Merseyside since arriving back in 2007 for a reported £11 million and it certainly comes as no surprise to see him leaving.

The 24-year old joins Hoffenheim on a two-and-a-half year deal, with Liverpool receiving £6 million for the winger.

The news broke on Tuesday afternoon after days and weeks of speculation regarding Babel’s future.

A statement on the Hoffenheim website reads: “We are very proud to be able to get Ryan Babel, an internationally experienced player from a top club like Liverpool, to Hoffenheim.”

Although he showed glimpses of what he is capable of on the odd occasion, I feel Babel was just never cut out for the Premier League. I’m sure Liverpool fans won’t be too sad to see him leave Anfield and they will be hoping that this allows Kenny Dalglish to go and bring in a new face or two before the window shuts next week.

That’s a joke.”

Those were the words of none other than Liverpool’s Ryan Babel following his side’s 1-0 FA Cup 3rd round defeat to Manchester United.

I have never been a huge fan of Babel, but on this occasion I have to wholeheartedly agree with the Dutch winger. The image you can see was posted by Babel on his Twitter just hours after yesterday’s game.

He is of course referring to Howard Webb in his Twitter outburst, which he later deleted and also apologised to the referee who was in charge of last summer’s World Cup final.

Webb, who was awarded an MBE only a few weeks back, was shocking during yesterday’s cup tie. His decision to award United a penalty was, quite simply, embarrassing.

I’m sure you’ve all read about Webb’s history at Old Trafford today. In case you haven’t, I can tell you that in the last 6 games he has reffed at Old Trafford, he has awarded United no less than 4 penalties.

I can understand why he sent off Steven Gerrard because the England midfielder did leave the ground. Webb loves playing to the crowd and is convinced by the reaction of a large crowd to give certain decisions.

A few games in the Championship might do him the world of good in my opinion.

What do you think of Webb? Please leave your comments below.

But here’s a new one for you.

Ryan Babel.

Yes, there are reports this morning that Harry Redknapp is looking to sign the Liverpool midfielder before the transfer window shuts later today.

Tottenham are keen to bring Babel to White Hart Lane on a season-long loan deal. However, Liverpool are only willing to let Babel leave on a permanent basis.

The 23-year old has struggled to make much of an impact since joining Liverpool back in 2007 and should Babel stay, he is likely to spend much of the season sat on the bench.

It remains to be seen if a deal can be struck between Liverpool and Tottenham so stay tuned to Football Corner for all the latest.

It has been suggested that Arsenal are preparing to make a £12 million bid for the Dutch winger who has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since arriving on Merseyside back in 2007.

Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash this summer in a bid to turn his Arsenal side into title challengers for the forthcoming Premier League season but would it make sense for the Frenchman to spend quite a bit of dosh on Babel?

There is no denying that Babel is an incredibly gifted footballer but whether or not he can perform at the highest level on a consistent basis is the big question. The 23-year old failed to nail down a first team place under Rafa Benitez at Anfield since joining the club but would next season be any different for Babel now that the Spaniard has left the club?

So, what do you think? Will Arsenal splash £12 million on Ryan Babel or should they spend their money elsewhere? Leave your comments below please.

In a week where Manchester United have been knocked out of the FA cup by League 1 side Leeds, Sir Alex Ferguson may realise it is time to strengthen his squad. Hatem Ben Arfa of Marsielle has today been linked with a switch to Old Trafford. The former Lyon starlet has failed to live up to expectations in France and was linked with a loan switch to Blackburn last week, which makes this rumour all the more bizzare.

Marsielle are reportedly looking for £40 million if they are to sell the winger. I find the fact that Ben Arfa has been linked with United to be very strange and £40 million is a staggering amount for a player that has never performed well on the biggest stage. I believe United would be better off looking for someone of the standard of David Silva, a player who has won a European Championship with Spain and a regular at Valencia.

Chance of this happening: 2/10, If Ben Arfa signs for United, it will certainly not be for anywhere near the £40 million mark.

Arsenal look resigned to losing Cesc Fabregas if they finish without silverware this season. The Arsenal captain has caught the eye of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. Arsenal are unwilling to lose their talismanic captain as Arsene Wenger aims to build a side around him. Real Madrid have been linked to Fabregas for years now and finally look set to make their move.

Should any deal happen, Wengar wants young Argentine Gonzalo Higuain as part of the deal. The 21-year old striker has been in great form this season and it remains to be seen if Madrid would allow him to leave.

Chances of this happening: 5/10, I believe Cesc is destined to return to Spain one day, This may not be for another few years but if Arsenal continue their current drought of trophies then perhaps Cesc may move sooner rather than later. Having said that, I can’t see Madrid letting Higuain go as part of the deal though.

Manchester City have today completed the signing of Patrick Viera on a 18 month contract. They have also been linked with numerous defenders since Roberto Mancini was appointed. The likes of Ivan Cordoba and Christian Chivu have been mentioned but today it’s the turn of Palermo centre back Simon Kjaer. The defender is highly rated by Mancini and the former Inter boss is expected to bid £18 million for his services. A possible departure from Eastlands may be Roque Santa Cruz who has been linked with a loan move to Spanish side Espanyol. The Paraguayan has been troubled by injuries since signing for City back in July and may be given a chance to gain fitness at Espanyol.

Chances of this happening: 7/10, There is no doubt City need to bolster their back line. I’m not going to lie, I don’t know a lot about Kjaer but Mancini must have seen something in him whilst managing in Italy to make him want to spend such a large amount on him, however I think Chivu would be a better option for City as he can fill in at left back when needed also.

Ryan Babel has been linked with a move to Premier League high flyers Birmingham City. The 23-year old winger isn’t a regular at Anfiled and will need games if he is to break into the Ducth side for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. Birmingham have reportedly had a £9 million bid turned down by the debt-ridden Merseyside club, as they are hoping for an offer of £12 million which is the sum they paid Ajax for his services back in 2007.

Babel clearly hasn’t lived up to expectations since making the move to Liverpool. In the limited chances he has been given, he has failed to make an impression and looks to be on his way out. Birmingham have money to spend and Babel looks to be one of Alex McLeish’s biggest targets this month.

Chances of this happening: 9/10, Babel needs to leave Liverpool, Rafa Benitz hasn’t given him a chance in the side this season and Birmingham would offer him the chance to make a name for himself in the Premier League with regular first team opportunities. Liverpool should take the £9 million on offer as, In my opinion, they are lucky to receive such a generous offer.

The Dutch international has struggled to nail down a first team place at Anfield ever since he arrived on Merseyside back in 2007.

The 23-year old has been strongly linked with a move away from Liverpool over the past 6 months with the likes of Tottenham and Bayern Munich thought to be interested.

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish knows he has money to spend during this month’s transfer window and Babel is now understood to be his number one target.

Babel has previously admitted he may look for a move away from Liverpool if Rafa Benitez continued to leave him out of his starting eleven. Nothing has changed on that front, so I really think this move could happen.

With this being a World Cup year, Babel knows he needs to be playing week in week out if he is to make the Dutch squad which travel to South Africa this summer. At Birmingham, he will no doubt receive first team football, however he may have to take a pay-cut, which may prove an obstacle in any deal.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this one. Comments below please.
