If you believe what you read in the papers, Robbie Keane could be set to sign for new club number 9 with the Republic of Ireland international attracting interest from both Sunderland and Aston Villa.

Keane, 29, left Tottenham back in January to spend the rest of this season on loan at Scottish giants side Celtic and in fairness to him, he has been scoring for fun in what has been a largely disappointing season for the Glasgow club.

With Tottenham now having 4 quality strikers on their books in the form of Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Eidur Gudjohnsen, it is thought that Keane has no future at White Hart Lane and should a bid of around £8 million come in for him, he will be sent packing.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is understood to be very keen on the former Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan, Leeds and Liverpool striker. With Darren Bent currently banging in the goals for the Black Cats, I reckon the pair, who used to play together at Tottenham, could form a decent partnership at the Stadium of Light.

Martin O’Neill is also believed to be keen to bring Keane to Villa Park, however it remains to be seen whether O’Neill will still be in charge at Aston Villa come the start of next season. There has been talk that O’Neill and Villa owner, Randy Lerner, no longer see eye to eye with one another and that O’Neill’s departure may be imminent.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say on this one. Will Keane leave Tottenham this summer for new club number 9? Comments below please.

The Spanish international has now scored an incredible 18 Premier League goals this season despite the fact he has been out injured for several games.

I have to say, I preferred his first goal this afternoon but having said that I cannot deny how impressed I was with his second. I really am running out of words to describe Torres, so I want you to sum him up in just three words.

Whenever we do this feature we always seem to get a good response so I would love if we can get another flood of comments.

Tell us your three words by leaving a comment below. I’ll have a go at putting three words together : Simply world class.

Before I get on to Sunderland, I think we can all agree that Portsmouth will not be playing Premier League football next season following tonight’s 2-1 defeat to Stoke.

Anyway, Sunderland.

Steve Bruce’s men fell to their 12th defeat of the season this afternoon at the hands of Arsenal. The North-East club are now just 3 points above the drop zone and I am sure the majority of Sunderland fans would not have envisaged that at the start of the season.

The last time Sunderland won a Premier League game was way back in November when they welcomed today’s opponents Arsenal to the Stadium of Light. That’s exactly three months ago since Sunderland tasted victory and if they don’t get their act together soon, they could find themselves in the Championship next season.

With just 12 games to go, Sunderland have some tricky fixtures between now and May with Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Tottenham all still to come for the Black Cats.

The majority of bookmakers have Sunderland around 6/1 to be relegated this season and to be honest, I feel that’s actually a very generous price considering the way they are playing at the moment.

What do you think? Comments below please.

This January transfer window has been pretty dull by all accounts.

So far, the most notable deals to go through have been those of Patrick Vieira to Manchester City and Sol Campbell back to Arsenal. That really isn’t saying much, is it?

With just over a week to go now before the transfer window slams shut, the papers are really full of it today.

The Kenwyne Jones to Liverpool rumour just won’t go away. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce called Liverpool disrespectful earlier this week for their pursuit of the player, however that doesn’t seemed to have quelled Liverpool’s interest for the player.

Rafa Benitez is desperate to add to his attacking options before next Monday’s deadline and it would seem he has his heart set on Jones. Bruce has said there is no chance that Jones, 26, will leave the Stadium of Light, unless someone coughs up £12 million.

Liverpool, as we know, are skint, so where they are going to get that kind of money between now and next Monday is anyone’s guess. Perhaps the sale of Ryan Babel may raise somewhere near the £10 million mark which could lead to Liverpool making a move. Only time will tell on that one.

Liverpool could clearly do with some money. They can get their hands on £100 million in the summer if they want it. All they would have to do is hand over their most prized asset, Fernando Torres to the world’s richest club, Manchester City.

Yes, reports today have claimed that Roberto Mancini will be giving a bottomless pit of money to spend in the summer and his number one target is the one they call, El Nino. It has been claimed that Torres, 24, may have to be sold should Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season and Liverpool fans certainly don’t need telling that finishing outside the top 4 is a definite possibility.

It would be fascinating to see if Liverpool did finish outside the top 4 this season, would Torres be on his way out of Anfield. At this moment and time I just can’t imagine Torres wearing a City jersey but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

What do you think? Comments below please.

Anyway, Rafa Benitez’ search for a striker continues and a new name entered the frame today. Sunderland’s Kenwyne Jones is now understood to be on Liverpool’s radar with several leading newspapers claiming a six-month loan deal may be on the cards.

Jones, 25, was recently valued at £40 million by Sunderland boss Steve Bruce following claims that Stoke City were interested in signing the former Southampton man.

Names like Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Emile Heskey, Marouane Chamakh have all been linked with moves to Anfield in recent weeks, but for whatever reasons, nothing has materialised on any of those fronts.

Sunderland have today done their best to rule out the possibility of Jones moving to Liverpool, however I have a feeling we haven’t heard the end of this. With all due respect to Sunderland, I would love to see Jones make the move to Merseyside. It would be fascinating to see Jones partner Fernando Torres in a Liverpool front two. I personally think it would work wonders, but whether the move goes ahead, we’ll have to wait and see.

From the moment the game started, Sunderland looked the better side and Steve Bruce will be feeling incredibly unlucky that his side didn’t take all three points away from Old Trafford this evening.

The in-form Darren Bent put the Black Cats ahead just six minutes into proceedings, with a quality striker from all of 25-yards. Some may point the finger at United keeper Ben Foster, however I personally didn’t think he could have done anything to keep Bent’s strike out.

As the first-half progressed, the home side failed to trouble Craig Gordon in the Sunderland goal and in truth, the visitors could have gone further ahead. Sir Alex Ferguson’s half-time team talk seemed to have worked when Dimitar Berbatov put the side’s level with a superb bicycle kick from sixteen yards out, however Sunderland were again in front when Kenwyne Jones jumped higher than Foster in the United goal to head home.

It was Andy Reid’s delightful ball which really made the goal, however unlike the first goal, questions must be asked of Foster this time around. With half an hour still left on the clock, many, including myself thought that United could still easily win the game, however when the 85th minute came, I certainly wasn’t thinking that anymore. The sending off of Kieran Richardson for two bookable offences proved to be decisive.

Following the red card, an uninspired United continued to struggle, however when Patrice Evra struck a volley goalwards with just two minutes left on the clock, Anton Ferdinand could only direct it into the Sunderland net. I can only imagine how gutted the Sunderland players and fans must feel this evening. For your side to come so close to claiming all three points at the Theatre of Dreams, only to conceded in stoppage time must be agony.

Elsewhere in the Premier League today it finished : Bolton 2-2 Tottenham, Burnley 2-1 Birmingham City, Hull City 2-1 Wigan, Wolves 0-1 Portsmouth.

Have your say on today’s action by leaving your comment below.

Ask the majority of Sunderland fans who their player of the season has been so far this year and chances of are, some will say either Lee Cattermole or Darren Bent, however one name you will hear mentioned time and again is that of Andy Reid.

The 27-year old has been in superb form this campaign for his club, however Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni continues to ignore him in terms of an international recall. Many have claimed that Reid’s weight issue is the reason behind it all, however last week, as I travelled by taxi to Dublin airport ahead of my weekend away in England, the taxi driver, who happened to go to school with the former Tottenham midfielder, told me the real reason.

He told me that Reid’s fondness of an oul sing-a-long got him into trouble with Ireland assistant manager Liam Brady. Reid and a few of his Ireland team-mate’s were having a drink at a bar in Germany following the side’s World Cup qualifying victory over Georgia. Brady told th lads at the bar to go to bed, however Reid decided to tell Brady where to go and as they say, the rest is history.

I don’t care what anyone says, Reid is without doubt one of Ireland’s most talented players at the moment. It is a real shame that he is not in the set-up because I have no doubt that with him in the Green jersey, Ireland are a far better outfit. Judging by today’s news that Reid has once again, unsurprisingly, been left out of Trapattoni’s squad to face Italy and Montenegro for next month’s qualifiers in Dublin, it’s not looking good for Andy’s international future.

Although I would love to say that Reid will one day pull on the Ireland jersey again and earn his 28th international cap, I just can’t. As long as Liam Brady is part of the set-up, Reid will continue to impress for Sunderland and continue to be ignored by his country. Shame.

What do you think? Comments below please.

Chamakh, 25, has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League ever since the transfer window opened on July 1st, with Arsenal and Sundelrand also understood to be interested, however it looks as though Gianfranco Zola has today won the race.

The Moroccon international has never hidden his desire to move to England, however once a move to Arsenal was ruled out, talk of a move to these shores cooled. It is thought that Chamakh will complete his move to Upton Park some time this week, with £7 million likely to be the transfer fee.

I must admit, I have only seen Chamakh on a number of occassions at Bordeaux but whenever I have seen him play, I have been impressed. He has got bags of pace and he certainly knows where the goal is, scoring 56 goals in just over 200 appearances. I personally think he will be a huge hit at West Ham and I look forward to seeing him banging in the goals in England.

What do you think? Comments below please.

I was shocked to see that Lee Cattermole has today joined Sunderland for an initial fee of just £6 million, the fee will rise to £10 million based on appearances and international caps etc;.

The England under-21 international was strongly linked with a move to the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, however it is Steve Bruce who has today won the race.

I don’t really know why I admire Cattermole so much, but I do.

He is just 20-years of age and he has already captained a Premier League club at Wigan. He has that bull-dog like approach which, for a midfield player, is vital. He is certainly not afraid of a tackle, although he does sometime mis-calculate his challenges.

I personally feel he has the potential to become the best midfielder in the country and I would be extremely surprised if one of the so-called, bigger clubs doesn’t come in for him in a year or two. In fact, I’m surprised none of the big 4 made a move for him this summer.

There have already been some cracking signings this summer, including Manchester City’s pruchase of Gareth Barry for just £12 million, however I firmly believe that Sunderland have today completed the signing of the summer in Cattermole.

I’m keen to hear what you have to say. Is Cattermole really the signing of the summer or was it someone else? Leave your comments below.
